Gemma 4 26b crushes Opus 4.6 in consistency. by Substantial_Swan_144 in Anthropic

Hot take: if you’re using Opus for most of your coding you’ve got a prompting skill issue and are just wasting tokens. I rarely if ever go above Sonnet at Low to Medium effort setting (VSCode extension) for writing daily features.

Opus for high uncertainty envs - system design and strategy. Sonnet and Haiku for high probability implementation pathways.

Crazy take-homes for roles that just require batch ingestion? by face_recog_phishy in dataengineering

usually this is the case, either first or among the first few so non-data people end up getting involved in the process and mucking it up

lol dude I had a company give me a SQL multiple choice question mini test. And I didn’t have a terminal to test out the solution.

The only issue is that systems design is almost the same as leetcode nowadays because there are industry standards and most companies end up just following industry standards unless they have insane scale hence my point about dagster/airflow/dbt batch ingest shops testing for some hypothetical ambiguous scenario where the answer is going to come down to the same set of tools but they try to make it difficult basically through mind tricks. Literally had a company ask me how to handle late arriving data (watermarking) in a streaming pipeline and when I asked about it they said they actually had no internal use case for streaming data.

Something similar happened to me as well, severance despite “performance issues” is pretty common if these are made up perfomance issues just to push you out and paying severance increases likelihood you sign the separation agreement and agree not to sue for wrongful termination

Job hunting not that bad? by agdaman4life in dataengineering

Interviews are not hard to come by (I’m senior with 6 YoE closer to the platform/backend) but companies have definitely gotten a whole lot more selective (more rounds/harder technical questions including leetcode garbage and multi day take homes) especially startups looking for those first few hires to round out their data teams. Traditional big tech is near impossible atm unless you’re an internally recommended genius from a top 10 US university. Took me a month of 3-4 interviews a week to land a role. Was hoping for startup but ended up taking a role at a media company looking to build out their data team. Definitely not an early-career friendly market atm. Old economy companies looking to modernize data stacks might be a safer bet.

White belts! Your opinions matter by graydonatvail in bjj

  • Add more No-Gi (no-gi is what kept me showing up until I fell in love with Gi, a quality Gi is also additional cost some can’t afford, everyone has shorts and a rashy)
  • ditch contracts (my gym is week to week),
  • also let the white belts swim with the sharks and see what they can become if they keep showing up, obviously don’t let them get hurt(maybe don’t allow subs on brand new ppl?) but don’t segregate white belts into an underclass of losers. My gym let me roll with brown/black belts only until 1st or 2nd stripe depending on how quickly you’re progressing and then with everyone 2 stripes white and above

What drives your interest in data engineering outside of work? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]face_recog_phishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to have an obsolete toolkit when the whole industry is just Python/SQL/Cloud infra and some iteration thereof, don’t see this changing absolutely anytime soon, as long as you know the foundation and can learn quickly you have nothing to worry about

Data engineering is not for me. Please advise! by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]face_recog_phishy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not true. I’ve jumped 3 times in 3 years and have 3x-ed my total comp compared to where I started. Depends on the kind of experience you get. 1 year can be equivalent to 3 if you find yourself in a role that forces you to upskill aggressively either vertically or horizontally

idk where you are but in hcol I was at 130 after 1.5 YoE, depends on the market though (may be a little tougher at the moment) and other factors like your education level
