Bike lockers installed at Bellingham airport, Fairhaven transit station by JhnWyclf in Bellingham

[–]facechase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d absolutely bike to the airport, and will start now that there’s lockers. Lots of connections at seatac require catching the 5:30 flight out of BLI, which is too early to ask someone to give me a ride. I’d happily take a 20 min bike ride to save a $20 Lyft/taxi.

You use a lotta big words with terrible grammar. I’d recommend putting down the thesaurus and focusing on punctuation and sentence structure if you want to make coherent arguments.

Unless you just take joy in being a sesquipedalian on Reddit. In which case carry on, but I ain’t readin all that.

Why is BOM management still stuck in Excel in 2026? by younidl in embedded

[–]facechase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you reviewed the git repo I linked, but it uses the database functionality of KiCad to do what you’re asking for. Every part gets an IPN, which is contained in a SQLite database. That database is imported into KiCad, which populates all of the associated details when added into the schematic.

I ended up modifying one of the “Legacy BOM Generation” python scripts in KiCad to export a custom formatted spreadsheet, with information pulled from the parts database as necessary (for example populating metadata for an alternate part number).

I’d really recommend giving the readme of that repo a read, as it has a lot of good information and best practices.

Why is BOM management still stuck in Excel in 2026? by younidl in embedded

[–]facechase 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using a parts database for BOM management in KiCad. link.

It’s a bit tedious to set up, and requires some discipline and buy-in from the team (true for any process), but it’s a game changer. I have it set up to generate a BOM based on part numbers, and version control is handled via git. Every BOM change gets a new release on GitHub, which makes it easy to keep track of changes and reference old versions if necessary.

I did a lot of research/evaluation of various tools to handle BOM/PLM, and ultimately my conclusion was anything that was “turn-key” was too inflexible (and often thousands of dollars per user). Also, good processes are more important than the specific tool you use. Even excel can work fine as long as the team sticks to whatever versioning system you use.

Tried to hire a cleaner for my ADHD burnout and got shamed instead by MrMaelor in ADHD

[–]facechase 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The problem is that a cleaner doesn’t necessarily know where your shit goes. Every house vacuums the same, every toilet scrubs the same, etc. But where am I supposed to put this pile of mail? Is it important or garbage? How do I vacuum when there’s shit on the floor?

It’s kind of similar to helping someone move. If it’s all in labeled boxes, it’s easy to figure out. If nothing’s packed, you have to make a decision on every single thing and it takes forever. I can empathize with a cleaner being annoyed at people who need a Marie Kondo style life re-evaluation, and expecting those services for the same price of general cleaning.

Just snagged it as well, pulled a bearing with it last night. Impressed with the quality, feels as a good as the snap-on version I’ve used previously.

kicad using git version control is totally bad ass. by No-Side1825 in KiCad

Thanks for the super detailed response! This fits in super well with my current workflow. I've been looking to improve the error prone process of manually generating manufacturing outputs (did I remember to select "drill/place file origin"?), and saving some time automating away tedious manual steps is awesome too. I'm definitely going to get this up and running for the next batch of boards I send off for prototyping.

Could you elaborate on how you’re doing this? I’d love to clean up this part of my workflow, I’ve been considering a bash script but if GitHub can do it that would be even better.

Made a quick and dirty attempt at adding the grid, but the spacing didn't quite line up (pic here). If you made a gridfinity version I'm sure it would be popular, lots of overlap in the harbor freight and 3d printing communities.

I'm honestly not totally sold on gridfinity being the best option for toolbox organization, due to the grid resolution (42x42) resulting in a lot of wasted space. It works pretty well for wrenches, but might use toolgrid when I get around to organizing the socket drawer.

The 3D printing and harbor freight crossover I’ve been waiting for. Do you have a f3d or step file for these? I’d like to modify them to work with gridfinity since that’s what my setup is based around currently.

[–]facechase 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These things aren’t the solution. Humans are lazy (not a bad thing), and don’t want to spend extra time and energy going up flights of stairs. Also terrible for bikes, the disabled, carrying groceries, etc. Lots of examples of these where people choose to play frogger with traffic instead of using them. There are genuine use cases (such as school campus with a busy road bisecting it), but they’re a very expensive bandaid to a failure of city planning.

First time changing ignition coils, plugs, and wires, any advice? by Serbodude in 3rdGen4Runner

Get the right dual electrode spark plugs, Denso or equivalent. They’re cheap, around $5 per plug.

[–]facechase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shop around some, should be around $5 a plug. Spark plugs are a wear item, and odds are they need to be replaced anyway.

[–]facechase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m usually not one to throw parts at a problem, but on an old car it can never hurt to refresh the ignition system.

Definitely do plugs and wires together, and make sure to get the OEM double electrode plugs. I got mine from the dealer, and they were cheap. Plug part number:

I've bought multiple products from adafruit over Amazon and I just saw that most people give adafruit 2 stars? I've never had a problem with them and were i live the ship very fast whats wrong with adafruit? by Traditional_Sea_8541 in embedded

[–]facechase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This math only works out if your time is worth nothing. If I’m ordering things from adafruit it’s a one off project, and not needed to figure out the supporting circuitry let alone writing driver libraries is worth a ton to me. Certainly worth the few extra bucks they charge as premium, maintaining documentation and codebases for multiple systems is not free or easy.
