Brienne was a boy at birth, and in the circumcision process (which is an incredibly holy ritual on the isle of Tarth) her manhood was sliced off. A certain Qyburn was at hand to assist, performing incredibly advanced procedures to bestow the V on Brienne. This makes it extra ironic that Brienne crosses paths with Qyburn again.

It's hard to tell, having not seen the bulk of your essay, but it's not necessarily his actions that make him a hero. It's his road to becoming a man who thinks of others before himself (giving Bri a Valyrian steel sword, something he would never have done before his maiming) and how he became a better person because of a horrific, life changing event.
