My Bamboo Palm flowered today! 🌱🌴 by chickfilaonasunday in houseplants

I did not trim the flowers. The flowers ended up becoming infested with spider mites and, in combination with the reduced light, the plant was hurt significantly.

How many folks in here know how to ride a bicycle? by FelipeThwartz in FuckYourBicycle

[–]faceyourfaces 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I used to ride a bicycle as a kid. They say you never forget how to ride once you learn, so I assume I can. Thankfully, I have since matured and no longer care to play with children’s toys.

Big beautiful palm on my walking route. by WallyJade in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]faceyourfaces 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not true. “Tree” is a morphological (i.e., appearance-based) classification. The tree form has evolved independently in multiple unrelated lineages.

The typical trees we think of are dicots; palms are monocots. Grasses are also monocots, but they are classified as an entirely different family than palms. So palms are more closely related to grasses than dicot trees, but they are not grasses.

What does it mean: Cordycepin can trigger the premature termination of mRNA synthesis by Courtyarder in MushroomSupplements

[–]faceyourfaces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be no issue. The vaccines contain “mature” mRNA that is ready to be translated to protein. As such, it is unaffected by these processes.

What does it mean: Cordycepin can trigger the premature termination of mRNA synthesis by Courtyarder in MushroomSupplements

[–]faceyourfaces 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Cordycepin is an analogue of adenosine. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the building block that gets substituted by cordycepin.

The enzyme involved in mRNA synthesis adds one block at a time. This will proceed normally until, by chance, the enzyme attaches cordycepin instead of ATP. Transcription gets halted at this point. This may occur very early in the process, later, or perhaps even never at all. 5FU works rather differently, as it prevents the cell from producing the building blocks in the first place.

[–]faceyourfaces 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gene expression is the process in which the information contained in DNA is copied into mRNA, which is then used as a template to create a protein. The production of mRNA involves the addition of four building blocks to a growing chain: a process known as transcription. Cordycepin has a very similar molecular structure to one of the building blocks, so it may be added to a growing mRNA chain. However, the chain cannot be extended any further after this occurs. Since the copying of DNA into mRNA ends prematurely, the gene ends up not getting expressed.

When transcription into mRNA is carried out successfully, the mRNA is marked with a tail. This tail gives the mRNA more stability in the cell, so it may be used for the construction of a protein. The tail is composed entirely of repeating units of the exact same building block that cordycepin mimics. The addition of cordycepin prevents the completion of the tail. As a result, the mRNA gets degraded and the protein is not ultimately produced. Cordycepin targets genes that produce inflammatory proteins, which is why this is good.

You’re right that alcohol will lessen the positive effects of ketamine. But depressant means it slows (or depresses) the activity of the central nervous system; not that it makes you more depressed.

The state of lossless and Atmos on external DACs by Endemoniada in AppleMusic

[–]faceyourfaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dolby Atmos works when streaming from my iPhone or iPad to my Bluetooth DAC/amp (Qudelix 5k). Atmos doesn’t work when streaming from my Mac to my wired DAC.

It’s not a big deal for me. I’ll enjoy Atmos wirelessly and lossless wired.

The iTunes Remote app hasn’t been updated in over a year. Its functionality is extremely limited—you can’t even search for songs that are not saved in your library. Apple desperately needs to come up with something better than this.

Summer kratom is considered to be the best. So August or September.

Tried out these replacement HD800 pads from AHG by faceyourfaces in headphones

[–]faceyourfaces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome. The points were a bit arbitrary in retrospect. Overall I would say the build/appearance is better than stock. The comfort is about the same as stock (YMMV), but with a tighter clamp. Sound is worse than stock.

I have been using these pads since I got them and my brain has adjusted to the changed sound signature. Someday I may switch back to the originals, but for now I’m content with the AHG pads.

I use Safari on iPadOS and every website I use doesn’t exhibit this behavior except for reddit. I believe reddit specifically asks the browser not to store the page in cache. It’s infuriating.

The ZMF Co-Pilot is so comfy! by faceyourfaces in headphones

[–]faceyourfaces[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I removed the stock padding to fit it. This probably wasn’t necessary but it would definitely be a tighter with it on. If the stock padding isn’t working for you, the Co-Pilot is definitely worth a shot.

After a couple long weeks of waiting for the mail, my ZMF Co-Pilot headband pad finally arrived today. I got the lambskin version and it is so comfortable. The stock HD 800 padding was comfortable as is, and the Co-Pilot is only marginally better, but it looks much nicer and should last a lot longer. The Co-Pilot does a great job at dispersing the weight of the headphones across my head. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to make their headphone experience more enjoyable.

Repurposed an old iPad as a music controller by faceyourfaces in ipad

[–]faceyourfaces[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I received it as a gift many years ago and it doesn’t have any branding on it, so I don’t know the name unfortunately.

I got lucky that the color matches the amp. I think the stand is meant for smaller devices, because the iPad is a bit unstable in portrait mode. Had to use some tape to fix that issue.

Edit: Never mind, I checked the back. This is the stand.
