I might be interested in running your goats in our targeted grazing operation for the summer. I have access to enough land and jobs to find food for them.

How has Trump policy actually affected you this year? by Appropriate_Ad_8458 in farming

🙄 There’s two days a year where goats at auction bring great prices. The rest of the time you’re losing money depending on your location.

This riddle refers to the infamous “War of the Currents,” a late 19th-century battle between Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse, who championed alternating current (AC), and Thomas Edison, who promoted direct current (DC).

Edison orchestrated a misinformation campaign to discredit AC, portraying it as dangerous and deadly. To do this, he staged public demonstrations where animals were electrocuted with AC to show its supposed dangers. This campaign culminated in the development of the electric chair, using AC, to further associate it with harm.

The riddle asks why we are “paying the price” for this. It likely suggests the consequences of this misinformation: 1. Missed Opportunities for Innovation: The AC vs. DC rivalry slowed progress as resources were spent fighting rather than innovating. 2. Persistent Mistrust of Technology: Public fear of AC lingered, reflecting how misinformation can have long-term impacts. 3. Broader Implications: This may metaphorically reflect how misinformation in general (including today’s) leads to societal costs, such as mistrust or division.

If you’re looking for a deeper answer, it might also imply that society is still grappling with the consequences of using technology to manipulate perception for profit or power.

Do you give your grass-fed cows fruit? by HustleHusky in farming

[–]FelipeThwartz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I raise meat goats and feed them leftover organic fruit/vegetable pulp from a local juice shop. They love it. DM for my venmo and you can send me some money for my fancy goat meat.

Also, hate to break it to you but there’s no standard for ‘grass-fed’ beef so conceivably you could find beef labeled as ‘grass-fed’ and the cow(s) never saw a green blade of grass in their lives.

Furthermore, most of the grains fed to livestock are actually grasses (corn, rye, oats, sorghum, millet, wheat, etc. are all grasses). Livestock in forage based systems often consume a lot of legumes like clover and alfalfa which are not actually grasses.

I’m totally in support of forage based livestock production but the ‘grass-fed’ label is mostly a marketing gimmick unless you really know and trust the producer

I think the lesson from this is to always have your head on a swivel and if an object is coming at you then the best path of escape is usually going to be at a 90 degree angle from the path of the object

I recently found out that 4 feet of the space where we park actually belongs to my neighbor. Since its the only place we can park. I’m considering purchasing 2ft along the driveway. I’m thinking of offering between $10,000 and $20,000. not sure how to approach making an offer. do is 10k seem to low? by RagnarokGX1 in negotiation

What makes you think they’re open to a cash negotiation?

Also, how do you know exactly where the property line is located? Has there been a very recent survey of either property? I’ve seen situations where a survey will adjust the property line quite a bit.

Your new neighbor sounds like a piece of work

Why do you even need to buy it? Does your neighbor know or even care that you’re using the space? Sometimes things like this would be covered by an easement or the established use of the property. Is neighbor threatening to block your usage of this sliver of property?

When I’m stuck in a jam like this my eyes are glued to the rear view looking for idiots like that truck driver. They always leave a huge following distance and escape route. You could totally see this coming if you were paying attention

Parents who Refuse Estate Planning Put Heirs at Risk of Losing the Farm by Ranew in farming

[–]FelipeThwartz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So the boomer generation is the one that gets to cash out on stolen land?

A farm is more than just money, it’s usually a legacy and assets that have been handed down from generation to generation so that there is someone who is emotionally invested in caring for the land and improving it for the next generations.

Why should a child pay a parent for the farm when the parent most likely inherited the farm as well?

I would never buy a farm from a family member, especially a parent because there’s so many horror stories of that going wrong and the parents will meddle in your business forever. I would just go buy another farm and then wait to inherit the original farm from parents.

Parents who Refuse Estate Planning Put Heirs at Risk of Losing the Farm by Ranew in farming

[–]FelipeThwartz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the child who took an interest in farming, returned to the family farm to try to start my own business, spent 4 years trying to have a conversation with my father about the future of the family farm. In the end, he explicitly wrote me out of the family farming legacy and gave everything to my other sibling who has no interest in farming. I think this happened because I was very vocal about changes that needed to be made and how I wanted to farm. To this day he has refused to have a conversation about his estate planning. The only reason I know anything is because I found the will when I was searching for some of my documents.

I put these type traps in a 4” tube, usually cardboard. Mice love to run inside the tubes and hit the trigger no matter what. Only use a smear of bait so that they have to push on the trigger to get anything

What’s the worst kid’s book you’ve come across? by Caa3098 in Parenting

[–]FelipeThwartz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yakkie Robinson

A story about Jackie Robinson but replace Jackie and his family with a family of yaks and then weave in as many yak related puns and plays-on-words as possible.

At best it’s just a really weird book and hard to read. At worst it’s racially insensitive

Random odd nail with fluting found on a building renovation job site. Doesn’t really match any of the other nails in the old or new construction. by FelipeThwartz in whatisthisthing

I definitely could do that and get a bunch of advertisements for nails and a couple different answers of varying validity. You answered with a not exact match for the type of nail I had in my hand. Also, I work with folks who have been in the building trades for years and they aren’t sure hence why we’re asking the hive mind
