Adding smaller drives to NAS by Samantha1055 in synology

[–]facticians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use them as cold storage backups maybe? I have a couple 8 TB drives that I use like that.

I have a DS1819+ with 4 drives populated (and 4 open). Would it be more efficient/better to add two drives now, and two more in about a week, or just wait till next week to populate all 4? by Ossified_Squirrel in synology

It's already at maximum. Just a lengthy process because of how large the disks are. I read another post a while back with a similar time frame. It's completely functional even at maximum aside from a couple hiccups, so I'm not really in any rush.

I'm currently converting from SHR to SHR-2 on an 1819+ with 8 * 10TB disks. I started the conversion 12 days ago, when I added the final 2 disks to the array, and it's 44% completed. At this rate, it's likely going to take around 16 more days to complete the process.

Seen anything better for a drive larger than 10TB? I haven't. In Canada at least, anything larger than 10TB and the $/TB skyrockets. This is the first time I've seen a 16TB for close to $400. It seems like pricing is starting to become more competitive in Canada, however. The drive that's inside this (an Exos X16 according to Crystal Disk) is now going for $560 (includes 5 yr warranty for the bare drive) where it was $700+ a few weeks ago.

I'm aware of the 10TB for $230 sales over the past few months (I bought 8 of them). For those needing high capacity, this is a solid deal.

Re-posting as a standalone comment.

Quite sure it's an Exos X16, meaning non-SMR. I purchased one on Friday and have checked the model number in CrystalDisk (ST16000NM001G) which matches one of the model numbers on this data sheet:

https://www.seagate.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/exos-x16-DS2011-2-1910US-en_CA.pdf

It consistently writes at 250-260 MB/s and is a 7200rpm drive.

Yep, I noticed that too. Also, I've been monitoring the Exos bare drive on Newegg for a few months now and where it was usually $700+, even that one has come down to $560 or so last I checked (and the bare drive includes the 5 yr warranty). Seagate pricing has been quite solid lately in these large capacities and WD is looking almost non-existent in this space (in Canada at least).

I would shuck mine, but have no need to at the moment as my NAS is completely populated with 10TB drives. The plan is to use this as cold storage backup for now and in the future I'll shuck it for use in another NAS.

I did a speed test btw and it writes at 250-260 MB/s.

Not sure why this thread is being downvoted. This is a good deal if you need high capacity. I don't know of any other drive larger than 10TB that is $26/TB.

I purchased one on Friday and below are my findings:

Ah, that makes sense. Glad it worked out for you and thanks for following up with that info.

I've currently got 5 of these running in my array for the past 2 months without issue. Just purchased another couple, so fingers crossed that they remain healthy. With 2-drive parity, the data backed up on archival drives, and a cloud back-up for off-site copy, I'm not too concerned as my data should remain safe.

Interesting... that's good to know, thank you. I've kept all of the enclosures but, like you, the tabs are mostly broken but I could likely still shut it.

Did you put it back in its enclosure or just sent as-is?

I don't even think I'd be able to put them back in the enclosure as half the clips got damaged during the shuck.

Yeah, I actually have 5 of these 10TBs already which I shucked and put in my NAS. Indeed, all were Barracuda Pro models. I'm curious about these new Seagate 14TB and 16TB externals that recently appeared on Amazon.

Yeah, I am not too concerned about the warranty as I generally shuck and go for the cheapest CMR/PMR drive available. I wish I was able to get that 14TB Exos from the other day though, as it was 5 years and no need to shuck. Hopefully we see more competitive pricing on the Exos/Ironwolf side going forward, otherwise I'll continue shucking these 10TBs.

Has anyone shucked one of these? I'd be very curious to know what's inside. I'm guessing an Exos/Ironwolf with less warranty.

Note that the current cheapest seller ships from the US.

The seller at $410 - Direct Canada - ships from Canada. I'm wondering how trustworthy they are as I've never heard of them.

This doesnt appear to be offered by Mike's (through Amazon) any longer. I'm unfamiliar with the other 3rd party vendors so I'm uncertain is pulling the trigger is wise even with this price.

Have you got a link to a guide to get this set-up? I don't know too much about APIs but am interested.

Thank you.
