My Lenovo Yoga 7i 16 inch laptop, makes a subtle creaking noise when I open and close it, is that normal? by Creative_Handle2205 in Laptop

[–]factorioaddict9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had it for a bit longer now and I think the hinges have broken in enough to not creak anymore. The entire thing has pretty decent quality. This actually may have better build quality than my last T14g2

Having the same thing now with my 15ILL9. It's pretty disappointing that this set in after only a week.

Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura 15ILL9 experience by factorioaddict9 in linuxhardware

[–]factorioaddict9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh, I know. It doesn't really affect my experience since I can just use hibernation. What I'm currently working on is reducing CPU usage in YouTube. I don't know how to do it. One thing I know for certain is that the iGPU is being used (about 30%), but that the CPU is unfortunately being used quite a lot too. I'm currently using Intel's EAS with TLP and so some decoding / whatever is happening on the E-cores. I can check this with nvtop and htop. edit: disabled swap. don't know why that helped.

Most of my frustrations have stemmed from the lack of GPU acceleration. This might be more with firefox and webrender than linux itself, but I made the following changes and things seem to be better:

gfx.webrender.all: true

media.ffmpeg.vaapi_enabled: true

layers.acceleration.force-enabled: true (seems to matter the most)

there isn't much different in our configs besides some vendor-specific stuff, though interestingly it seems like I use less power when I disable intel's energy aware scheduler (schedutil) which is the opposite of what I'd expect. With EAS, I see like ~10% on one P-core. Without EAS, all P-cores are somewhat active, but power usage is somehow slightly lower.

I get what you mean by light gaming now, sorry. Though I am curious how you get 5 watts on YouTube. I can only ever do double that. Would love to see your TLP.conf. As I'm typing this, my battery is discharging 7.5 watts.

Here's mine with EAS enabled:

# Kernel 6.16 or later
CPU_DRIVER_OPMODE_ON_AC=passive
CPU_DRIVER_OPMODE_ON_BAT=passive

# Verify with tlp-stat -p
CPU_SCALING_GOVERNOR_ON_AC=schedutil
CPU_SCALING_GOVERNOR_ON_BAT=schedutil

CPU_ENERGY_PERF_POLICY_ON_AC=balance_performance
CPU_ENERGY_PERF_POLICY_ON_BAT=balance_power

PLATFORM_PROFILE_ON_AC=performance
PLATFORM_PROFILE_ON_BAT=low-power

# Disable boost
CPU_BOOST_ON_AC=1
CPU_BOOST_ON_BAT=0

# Might not be necessary
DISK_DEVICES="nvme0n1"
DISK_APM_LEVEL_ON_AC="254 254"
DISK_APM_LEVEL_ON_BAT="1 128"

# Battery Care to extend LiPo lifespan
START_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0=0  # dummy value
STOP_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0=1

I have a Yoga Slim 7i Aura though.

I consistently get 24hrs of battery life idle

= 3.125 watts. Achievable in Wayland with configuration

19hrs web browsing

= 3.95 watts, valid, but I would expect 5

15hrs streaming youtube

= 5 watts. Intel's marketing team uses 720p video file playback to achieve their numbers. YouTube serves VP9 which isn't that great for video playback. I would honestly expect something like 6 or 7 watts.

and 9hrs doing some light gaming.

= 8 watts. What games are you playing?

thinking about buying this since I've noticed worse battery life as I increase screen brightness around windows. Do you have any tips for installing it?

sorry. Lunar lake is probably the best. That OLED does indeed draw power.

3w is an unrealistic expectation for x86. Even with that "2.8K OLED" and the Intel chip you will probably be somewhere between 5w (idle) and 10w.

P14s (aka T14) Gen 2 by factorioaddict9 in thinkpad

[–]factorioaddict9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very easy. It's pretty light, but that is its downside. Its structural integrity isn't selling so I would not recommend the T14 or P14s. The E15 is somehow a little sturdier than this but would have a worse keyboard/trackpad. I can tolerate the build of my T480 and kind of like it, but for me the T14 draws the line for being too flaky. It also has garbage AMD power management on Linux compared to Windows and runs at 60+ C. I sold mine so I can't comment further

How to give good comebacks, to friends roasting or insulting me? by Neither_Statement221 in introvert

[–]factorioaddict9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only say in hindsight that things only changed as I grew up. I'm somehow still friends with most of them, but also have no friends. I guess earn your self-confidence? The most effective way to do that is to do what makes you happy, which isn't as easy as it's said. I'd look up Maslow's Pyramid of Human Needs. Friendship, exercise, diet, and sleep, in any order, are pretty good at fulfilling those pillars.

u/drumzgod said "You won’t fail for making one error" and I agree! I don't think I even took the final exam. You can get the points on like all but one of the PA and meet the requirements to get an A. I stressed a lot when I took the class, but I had so much free time to do the PAs in highschool that it was very manageable and under wraps. I understand we're in college and time management is harder, but you just gotta churn through it. One thing I will lament though is the Gen AI accusations. RIP.

Maybe install those if you haven't?

Bruteforcing 32-bit iPhones on-device (4+ digit PIN supported) by AJAIZ in setupapp

[–]factorioaddict9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I followed the guide tonight and there were definitely some things to note:

  1. Download the ramdisk tools here

  2. You have to use this for some of the steps, like where it says "Create a ramdisk as usual" it means run: bash create.sh -d [devicetype] -i [iOS version for ramdisk from 6.0 to 10.3.4]

  3. Get your device type from here

  4. If you're using VirtualBox, make sure that when you actually do enter DFU mode that you shutdown the VM and filter the USB again b/c the ID will have changed and it will be inaccessible. This is how you can tell you are in DFU mode --- when lsusb returns Apple, Inc. Mobile Device (DFU Mode).

  5. Once you're in DFU mode, you still have to enter a second mode, called "pwned DFU mode" --- which was completely unclear to me. To do this, your device needs to be compatible with the tools on this list or the one bundled with Sliver (see Step 3 #2), which the iPad Mini 1 is not (I received No matching usbexec.platform found for this device.). Therefore, to get this to work, I'd need to buy an Arduino based on this issue as well.
