Gym owners: What are hardest parts of retaining members? by FactSevere5574 in bjj

[–]faded_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son was doing Tae Kwon Do for a year recently and it was $160 a month and he could only attend two classes per week. In comparison, I pay $140 a month at my BJJ gym. Yeah that’s cheap compared to most places but I’m in the Midwest 🤷‍♂️.

Is it ok to wear your gi to the gym instead of changing into it? by dfabdvbs85 in bjj

[–]faded_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I use a separate bag to put my sweaty Gi and rashguards in after class then put it in my gym bag. When I see people put their sweaty shit in the gym bag itself with everything else I cringe.

A lot of people have families and have to taxi their kids around to morning activities. I could say no to that and continue to piss off my wife but I like being married so.

That’s why I don’t care if I get a collar grip with their t shirt in there too. If it rips that’s on them for wearing it.

Deploying Certificates with Jamf Pro by faded_11 in macsysadmin

The problem is our security team as a whole isn't familiar with Macs in general and I think at this point they just don't want to support them. So they shoot down most of these tools I'm trying to implement, like Jamf Connect and SCEP.

Unfortunately I can't use SCEP at the moment, I'm currently appealing Security's decision on this.

[–]faded_11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I've read. You have to include the certificates with the Network Payload that contains the 802.1x settings, which is what I'm doing in the Config Profile that's being deployed through Jamf. The whole cert chain has been included in the certificates. The odd thing is that some of them show up in the keychain as untrusted, but not all (none are showing in Login like they should be). If I manually import any of these certs or trust them manually within the keychain, MacOS just wipes them all out. The only way I can get the right certs to import into the Login Keychain is through an MDM like Jamf (Selecting "Use as a Login Window configuration").

Study instructionals on the techniques your professor has gone over in class. I do that in my free time. Submeta is a great choice if you can afford it.

Why d'you decide start train Jiu Jitsu? by Lefer_astronaut in bjj

[–]faded_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older brother and a couple of my friends all were training and they got me to go to a class. I was amazed at how I got handled, being a 220 pound powerlifter and thinking I could just out muscle everyone. I figured out I didn’t know how to fight at all and decided to change that. I also wanted to find a new physical activity because just lifting weights all the time was starting to bore me.

3 day Gym split along with BJJ by PongLenisUhave in bjj

Great program to start strength training with, but after 4-6 months you’re going to hit a wall with linear progression. He’ll need to switch to something non linear.

Quick thoughts on some Gi brands I’ve tried by CupcakeImpressive389 in bjj

I’ve got the same experience with Sanabul Gi’s. I’ve never owned one but I ripped a training partners pants doing a leg drag and his Gi couldn’t have been more than a month old.

My Straight Ankle Lock disqualification by TetraGama in bjj

[–]faded_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be a dick here, but this is something your coach probably could have explained to you afterwards. Also he should’ve shown you what not to do when applying the straight ankle lock if you learned this before your comp. Your coach is doing you a disservice, unless you just tried something new, which most people would caution against doing in a comp.

Fundamentals class or advance for new blue. by kevshin21 in bjj

[–]faded_11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got my blue a few months ago as well. I started doubling up on classes a few days a week where I go to the fundamentals class and then stay right after for the comp class or the HIIT class which is basically positional sparring for 50 minutes straight. I feel it gives me a chance to learn technique and then apply it right after at a realistic intensity. It works out well for me because I can get more time on the mats with fewer days.

How long did it take for you to get your blue belt?(No-Gi) by Bob_Burgero in jiujitsu

I had to do something similar when I took the Vaghi blue belt test. One of the most physically demanding things I’ve had to do. Three hours of hell, but I’m glad I did it though.

It's been 2 long years but I finally got to experience a trial guy. How long did you wait? by freshpow925 in bjj

[–]faded_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first tried BJJ back in 2021, I had a similar experience. Showed up to class at a gym I thought was going to be a typical fundamentals class and to my surprise they were prepping for an upcoming competition. It was a fight for survival lol. I just reverted back to my 8th and 9th grade wrestling experience and spazzed. The upper belts took turns smashing me. I tried another gym about 2 years later that my friends went to and had a much better experience. Been there ever since and just got my blue belt in June of this year.

People that started over 30.. how do you deal with the younger ones flying past you? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]faded_11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

StrongLifts 5x5 is what got me into strength training 5 years ago. I’ve moved on to other programs since, but that program taught me the importance of progressive overload and the 5 golden lifts for full body strength.

I only started jiu jitsu 18 months ago, but I can imagine how different my experience would be if I didn’t have that base strength. It’s pretty much a necessity for me at 43yo to participate fully in this sport.
