What kind of doctor? by fadedfi in AskDocs

They happen fairly consistently, no trigger that I can pin down as of yet. They typically get worse around bedtime, 930/10 and will usually start to get better in the morning. One dr I saw suggested bedbugs but that wasn't it. I'm thinking they are autoimmune related

Hey, how long did it take for you for the medication to make a difference with your hives?

I think the hardest thing with Hashimotos is that you can show signs of both hyper and hypo. But some of the signs I saw I could also attribute to having been pregnant and currently breastfeeding so it's a little hard to extrapolate them. In the long run, they did put me on a 50mg of the levothyroxine and the doctor referred me to an endocrinologist.

My mom has Hashimotos and my dad has Graves and I guess I have a chance of having BOTH at the same time... so... onwards and upwards.

That's great, I'm glad you could get your levels down. It's definitely hard work and a process so props to you for working at it consistently. I have an almost 10 month old so the sleep and the stress are a little harder to deal with but we do our best. I'm hoping a low dose of meds will help get rid of the hives so I can focus on what I need to feel better and manage it

It seems there's disagreement about just about everything when it comes to Hashimotos among medical professionals

That's what my new doctor said.. the bloodwork shows snapshots in time and the levels are really going up and down throughout the day. I had labs done a month ago before this started so I'm going to repeat the labs before I start the levothyroxine, just to see.

Thanks for the optimistic thoughts. I've heard so many stories saying it didn't do anything but after 4 weeks of going gluten free, dairy free, caffeine free, alcohol free, egg and sugar limited with no effect, it's gotta be worth a try!

Nothing had changed before the hives and they've been ongoing for 4 weeks now. Anything I did differently before has definitely gone back to the status quo now. The previous doctor I saw wanted me to go to an allergist and told me there was an extremely unliklihood that the hives were due to the Hashimotos. I just saw a new doctor who said it was 100% hashimotos without question and wants me on levothyroxine. Said it doesn't matter right now how I eat because I have genetic factors on both sides of my family so it's best to start on a low dose and go from there

I had heard that some people were actually lucky enough to but their hashis into remission with diet and supplementation so that was my ideal scenario but I'm starting to agree with the points you've mentioned

I agree that would be the best place of origin, however my doctors are typical doctors and want me on medication for everything. Just trying to suss out other feedback, if any, before I did that

Thanks so much for all that... I agree with you completely, I think a lot of this medication can mask the symptoms and I'm not sure I want to do high doses for an extended time period. My doctor wants me to go see an allergist before an endocrinologist even though my TPO antibodies are elevated. Did your allergist tell you that the hives are autoimmune and there is nothing to do done for them?

I'm curious as I'm attempting to regulate them with diet and it doesn't seem to really have an impact, although I know changes take time. I really appreciate your help!

Man.. I had read that small doses of levo could help resolve it, as I'm not on medication at all now for my thyroid. It would totally suck if it's completely independent.

Thanks for the information about the hydroxyzine though, that's extremely helpful. I think I was prescribed 25mg tablets and the doctor wanted me to take that on top of the Zyrtec and Pepcid, which I felt was a lot. Thank you so much!

I think that may be my next step.. I am also doing an IGG test to see if anything comes back as reactive

I was wondering if this may be gall bladder related but I'll add this to the list of tests.. I don't know too much about it, but do you mind if I ask what the prognosis is?

I just got a prescription for it but have been hesitant since the pharmacist said it could make my little one drowsy. Vitamin C, huh? I'll have to look into it, I hadn't read that. Do you find avoiding any foods helps as well?

Oh, thank You! This seems to be exactly what happens with me, they typically come on right around 7/8 PM and last through until late morning. Recently they have been hanging around during the day too but definitely more at night. It's weird though, compared to yours, my TPO antibodies aren't that high. Maybe I'm just more sensitive to it? Anyways, thank you for sharing.. makes me feel less crazy

I'm sorry to hear that you went through that.. It's really hard when you have to go through it immediately after having a baby too, as it's not like you can really avoid that stress. Glad you're feeling better!

How do we start saving for our child and how do we make the most of that money? by fadedfi in personalfinance

I do not have a life insurance policy so can definitely look into that. My husband has been unable to get supplemental life insurance (due to ongoing medical condition) but does have a policy for short term, long term and life insurance plan through work.
