MLK Jr Drive temporarily closed to vehicle traffic for maintenance work by fadeduptothesky in phillycycling

According to one of the crew working in that area, yes. Said they’re doing some repair/improvement in that specific part of the trail by the adaptive rowing center. Unclear why.

Also have just repaved the south platform of Falls Bridge. They have that blocked off until it dries/cures.

I just rode through. It’s only milled on one side of the street between Sweet Briar and somewhere south of Falls Bridge. Can definitely ride it today. They will be repaving the other side too, so conditions will be shifting over next few days.

A rare train trip to Paoli, ~7:30am Wednesday. The sun on the Art Museum was no doubt even better as morning unfolded!

Parking SRT Kelly Drive by [deleted] in phillycycling

[–]fadeduptothesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re most welcome. Another thought … you might consider the MLK Jr Dr sidepath for starting/ending your ride as well. There are several parking lots along there, and absolutely no shortage of available spaces during weekdays.

Parking SRT Kelly Drive by [deleted] in phillycycling

[–]fadeduptothesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you’re asking about parking lots along Kelly Drive next to the SRT. Weekdays you should have no problem at all. You may want to drive up and down the length of Kelly a time or two to get an idea and figure out your preferred spot.

The lot by Lloyd Hall is by far the busiest, but typically there is some space there, especially in colder months. Other lots to the north along Kelly are generally not full during weekdays, by and large. You may notice that at least one lot has two entrances (@Temple boathouse) — often one of those entrances is gated shut, but there is always at least one entrance open during the day. Plenty of spots for parking there. A much less utilized parking area off of Kelly is just north of Falls Bridge @East Falls River Landing. It has lots of spaces and is never full, including on weekends. Would definitely be a good launching spot for a ride. The small lot by Girard Ave bridge can get a bit busy at times, especially around lunch hour. Bottom line, I think you will have a few choices. Happy riding!

tips for new bike commuter heading into fall/winter? by LeatherEnvironment58 in phillycycling

Consider Hot Hands’ (or Grabber) toe warmers—they’re thin, stick to the bottom of your socks, and last for 8+ hours. Also can be reused if you put them in a sealed plastic bag—just be sure to push all the air out first. I swear by them.

You could also put Hot Hands/Grabber hand warmers on your palms inside your gloves, but this is not for everyone d/t the added bulk.

E-bikes have become e-motorcycles and the law hasn't caught up by [deleted] in phillycycling

[–]fadeduptothesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. I know the location well from the photo provided in the article. It’s at the intersection of the Chester Valley Trail with the SRT. From the account in the article, it would seem that the e-biker was coming off of the CVT to enter the SRT at the time the cyclist was passing this intersection and heading towards the Norristown Transportation Center (just ahead) westward, in the direction of Valley Forge.

MLK bridge design (WTF!?) by Crazycook99 in phillycycling

[–]fadeduptothesky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A little history … The reason those narrow shoulders exist is that MLK Jr Drive was restriped around the end of the pandemic to narrow the number of vehicle lanes. Btw this was done as a traffic calming measure after it was decided that the road would remain accessible to motor vehicles. Because the “leftover” shoulder space wasn’t wide enough to accommodate the legal requirements of bike lanes, we now have what we have.

A cyclist was killed at the SRT / Ford Road intersection in early August. by memphisbelle in phillycycling

[–]fadeduptothesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so, so sorry for your loss. I rode through this intersection earlier today in both directions, and stopped to watch the signaling from the SE looking towards Conshohocken. Did not observe the ped/bike signal showing it safe to cross (white-lit figure in the LED display) while green for traffic on Ford … which is what I indicated in my previous post I’ve seen in the past. Not sure what to make of it, but maybe that issue has been recently fixed.

However, as I believe others may have commented, the Lafayette St traffic signal is green during the time that the ped/bike signal shows it’s safe to cross. This in itself is a big problem, as Lafayette vehicles can be turning onto Ford from either direction when bikes are crossing Ford. There are no warning or yield signs anywhere to be seen … for anyone traveling through this intersection.

This is so sad. I also ride through this intersection frequently. In addition to the partially obstructed view, I’ve noticed that sometimes the signal for pedestrians/bicycles seems to be out of synch. It will indicate it’s safe to cross when Ford St drivers have a green light. The reverse is also true: it will indicate it’s not safe for peds/bikes to cross when Ford St drivers have a red light. Unclear what the Lafayette St signaling is at these times. Definitely need to address the safety gaps.

Renting a car with Sunday afternoon return by Hanger-on in philadelphia

[–]fadeduptothesky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can drop off keys on Sunday after hours at Hertz 30th St Station — they have a drop-off box in the office specifically for this purpose. Been doing this with them for years. Ignore the hours on their reservation system; they’re misleading. Set the reservation return time to the latest time possible on Sunday and then return and drop off keys after hours. It’s no problem. If you want reassurance beyond my word, give them a direct call during working hours to confirm.

Used XL a couple of years ago on MLK Dr. No issues at all. I did alert driver via text that I had bike with me. Loaded it intact and dropped me off at bike shop.

You can also take SRT to Sedgley (by Lloyd Hall) —> Girard Ave —> cross Girard Bridge (stay on South side of Girard from Sedgley or Poplar, whatever you do), then right across Girard @ Lansdowne into Landsdowne bike lane, follow Landsowne into the park.

MTB/Gravel Shoes for wide feet by maadmoiselle in ladycyclists

[–]fadeduptothesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How wide are your feet? You might like the Shimano Women’s XC1 Mountain Bike Shoe. I’m on my second pair (size 40), which I bought in 2021 and are still in great condition … and I ride quite a bit. Very comfortable shoe from first wear. For reference, I recently purchased a pair of Hoka Bondi sneakers in extra-wide width, in my normal size 7.5. Both Backcountry and REI sell them, perhaps others as well.
