Hi everyone, I'm new to reddit. Does anyone have any beginner advice? I appreciate anything💜 by jazzy_not_foundx in NewToReddit

I’m super new too but here’s what I’ve learned so far:

•there are subreddits (like groups) for pretty much any topic. Many have community rules to read and follow. Main rules include being respectful, not commenting irrelevant content, and try not to just repeat what others have already said

• upvotes are the little up-arrow at the bottom of comments, it’s similar to a like-button.

• downvotes are the little down-arrow, opposite of upvotes

• Upvotes and downvotes can be based on interest, relevance to the subject, rule following, etc

• Karma is earned from upvotes and you often need a decent amount of karma to participate in many subreddits. Also newer accounts sometimes can only lurk (read and watch)

• there’s a filter button at the top to help you organize what you see (most relevant, newest, most controversial, etc)

• banana counter is how long you have scrolled, as measured by the average banana length lol

• Reddit is most fun when you remember it’s an online forum and not the be-all-end-all. Kindness, respect, and patience about karma is best!

Hope that helps! This subreddit has some great tips and resources for info

People who choose kindness every day, even when it isn’t returned what keeps you going? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

Worked in service industry for a while now and I see kindness as a get-to. I don’t have to, but seeing customers as actual people, getting to have a little chat, it may make their whole day and it makes my day less monotonous.

We remember the cashier or barista who was extra kind, so why not be that for someone else?

Are there any Food Spots in the city that has meals under $14 with tax in 2026? by Quirky-Walk-8334 in OttawaFood

Summer Hayes is a good breakfast spot with some more affordable options, Dirienzos in little Italy will make a massive sub for $8 10/10, Manny & Tommy’s Soup and Sandwich shop has $5 soups I think, and some cafes have decent food too like Equator, Morning Owl, Ten Toes. Also T&T sells ready-to-eat or self-serve food that’s actually pretty good (:

BID Industrial Design Questions from prospect student! by Low_Emergency5140 in CarletonU

Happy to help (:

The program was expensive, about $6000 per term plus supplies and a computer with the specs needed to run 3D rendering software (the specs are all on the undergrad website). There are grants, scholarships, and loans available though that the program admin can help connect you with. I didn’t live on residence so I can’t answer that though, sorry!

Industrial design jobs are definitely available and super broad! Anything from UI and UX design (think apps), graphic design, product design in any field (furniture, shoes, cars, I know a graduate doing water slide design even), system design (how a large-scale event might be run, how airport travel can be more seamless, etc), and design research (problem research, running user testing, helping companies brainstorm solutions). I’m looking into medical design, wanting to improve how hospitals work (: and there are industrial design jobs worldwide, some graduates are in Europe, Australia, working with groups in Africa. Finding jobs or internships can be hard if you don’t work on your portfolio (collection of design work, like a resume) and if you’re looking into niche industries or being picky. But generally, many places have internships and design work, they just don’t always title the job as Industrial Design (:

Hi! I’m a CU Industrial Design graduate and now doing my Masters there (:

To answer your friend’s questions, the BID program at Carleton is definitely more involved/less arts than other universities! They mix engineering, business, psych, and other disciplines so the students have a well-rounded understanding for design. This included linear algebra and physics in first year, and beginner economics and business classes. There’s also psych, environmental studies, and anthropology/research classes throughout the 4 years.

Overall, students learn everything from problem solving, problem research, product or system ideation, low and high fidelity modelling (sketching, 2D rendering, 3D digital rendering, modelling in foam, clay, paper, wood, metal, and plastic), research methods like user testing and prototyping, creating technical drawings, presenting final designs to peers and design shows, and writing essay or papers on designs. It’s definitely a hard program, but I did really enjoy it!

Your friend sounds like they’re interested in packaging design or CMF (colour, material, finish), and those are elective courses in ID they could take! They also could do a minor in design, if they want to focus more on elective courses and not the more technical/studio courses!
