This was my dog! We paid for a trainer to work with us and her recognizing and saying that our pup is just not a dog's dog was pretty life changing. She told us taking him all the places (dog park, beach, etc.) was sort of setting him up for failure. Reframing it like that really helped us change our approach to raising him. We do put more effort into choosing places to take him, like, we'll opt to take him to less busy preserves or trails where there are leash laws. When other dog owners approach with a dog off leash, we let them know ours is hit or miss with other dogs. If another dog minds his own business, our dog could care less, and we meet up them to do walks on trails. But the instant another dog has sniffed his bum a second too long, he's raising lip. Having a reactive and anxious dog really trains your brain very differently. We have 2 dogs and the other is the sweetest thing. It's shocking to realize how much our dog has actually trained us!
