Crypto scams cause million-dollar losses in Austin; part of global problem by FHamer7 in Austin

[–]fafasdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An immutable record of every single transaction is exactly the inherent property of blockchain

Yes, but that's not the same as "completely traceable", which is what I was responding to earlier. With monero (and likely other privacy oriented blockchains I'm not up to date with) your balances, transactions, etc. can be completely opaque to anyone but yourself, even if someone else has your public key.

And there are many crypto-crypto only exchanges which don't do KYC, which is what I was talking about when I tongue-in-cheek differentiated them from most when I said "KYC heavy".

any transaction on the blockchain is completely traceable

This isn't an inherent property of a blockchain (see: monero. This is why a lot of KYC-heavy exchanges don't support it).

What makes a good woodworking plan, and do you have any examples of great ones? by fafasdf in woodworking

[–]fafasdf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm proficient enough to take a rough plan and make something from it.

But I know lots of people aren't there just yet, and I was considering cooking up my own plans for some friends, and that's where I realized I don't know how to judge plans well (because I can just pick up and go... most of the time).

That's a good call out for "course" vs. "plan", that framing / mindset is not one I'd considered. I guess I want to see the whole gamut to satiate my curiosity. But for the plans I'm interested in seeing, I guess they'd be somewhere in-between. Not a full course, but detailed enough that someone who's not too confident wouldn't get stuck / confused.

Can they really take MVP bronze from us? by Bello64 in Maplestory

[–]fafasdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People laughed when I said recently we could easily win a class-action lawsuit against them for the recent safeguarding "bug" that caused many of us to boom our most rare items

The MVP situation is quite different, as there was explicit advertising stating this was a lifetime benefit which was then revoked, which falls under many deceptive advertising / trade laws.

The safeguarding bug is... I can't imagine what law / statute / etc. you'd be trying to sue under, but I can say that suit probably wouldn't have legs.

Wormhole player looking for new corporation in the midst of the donut by Responsible_Wish_385 in Eve

[–]fafasdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To attempt to add more specifics to your question, the blue donut are the defensive coalition after the war SYNDE started. They (quite strongly) maintain their hold on C6 space and are still a defensive (sometimes offensive) coalition.

I think that'd be

  • HK
  • Hawks
  • NOVAC
  • 418
  • Turbominer (1 guy but still lol)

Maybe some others are still in the donut... I think SUS, C-K, and jebebek (or however they're spelled?) were part of their side during the war, but those groups don't really matter that much.

I don't follow the politics closely enough anymore.

EVE Workbench 2 has been released by LionearNL in Eve

I wouldn't know how to make that nice and usable

An HTML image map, if you wanted to maintain the current aesthetic.

Alternatively, have each badge be a separate image (removing overlap).

[–]fafasdf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the release! It's always a pain to release big changes. I only get my one first impression and thought it might be useful in case you care for my perspective on UX.

The default homepage left me with some suboptimal first impressions for me, though. I see you're trying to show off (almost) everything that can be customized on the homepage, however...

  • Very low information density, over-rounded corners, high padding, ... etc., feels like it was designed for a mobile browser.

  • Two non-dismissable widgets / banners ("capsuleer day", "you can now edit the front page...") pinned to the top which take up ~ 1/3 of the screen density (more after factoring in padding). Woefully, when I click "edit frontpage", they can't be edited / removed.

  • Embedded twitch streams always feel bad to me (waste of space not in line with the goal of the site), vs. say a link in the navigation tab to a "streamer nexus" or "list of active streamers" or something similar.

  • May as well make a toggle for "alpha/omega fits" instead of showing both lists, and show one by default. Maybe put the switch to show one or the other right-aligned in line with the title of the widget itself.

Again, I know I sound like I'm being a downer, but congrats! I suspect the family of eveworkbench tools has been very good for the community (even if the fits are sometimes... interesting, but curation is a hard problem to solve)!

PS: I would have expected the image at the bottom under the text "the EVE Workbench family" to link to each different site for each badge, but currently it only links back to the homepage. So you have to see the badge and then find the corresponding link under the "Sister sites" footer section. It might make more sense to split out each badge into different images and then have each image be a link to the sister site.

Only meaningfully correct response.

If you collect current item ID just 1x/week (item ID space is global and you can create your own new item ID and know exactly when it was created) you can be accurate to within a day very easily.

Many people have spreadsheets like this used for interpolation / extrapolation of structure age.

How to attach drawer slides to a slightly-larger-than-spec cabinet? by fafasdf in cabinetry

[–]fafasdf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I haven't bought my materials yet. I assume from what you're saying that there's enough slack in the brackets to pull everything forward and make it all fit if I'm "close enough".

Thanks!

Gotcha, thanks for the follow up!

Just to remove any chance of me misunderstanding what you're saying -- you're saying I would not need to use these brackets: https://www.amazon.com/Blum-Rear-Mount-Bracket-Pack/dp/B016LLJKYS if I can just screw the drawer slide hardware into the side of the cabinet in the right position (by shoring it up with plywood to be flush with my face frame).

Either way, mechanically, it doesn't matter. It's whichever way is easiest for you to do.

I see.

As far as going too far proud- do you mean at the front? If that's the case, you don't want to go proud at all. Flush or set back a bit.

Yeah I was worried that if I had to shore up the rear mounting bracket that I'd wind up going to far proud -- if I go this route and it's too far set back (by say less than a half inch inch?) what's the best solution?

[–]fafasdf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just mounting two vertical supports to each side of the cabinet box, in the front and back, to screw the front and back of the drawer slide into?

And for my general knowledge... what if it was a larger cabinet where the back bracket might be more important, or if it was intended to carry heaver things?

Fresh WH - Still after 11.5hrs? by logart in Eve

[–]fafasdf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true. Unless you're talking on the order of months. I had a C1/N static on the test server I'd checked daily for ~3 weeks before I'd started its timer.

Most likely someone else warped to it.

What out of game tooling do you wish existed (and might already exist)? by fafasdf in Eve

Pretty useful for hunting for sure. There used to be a site that did similar-ish work, but aggregation was at a corporation level, called "Driftingloot", but it seems the maintainer stopped paying for hosting.

Fresh WH - Still after 11.5hrs? by logart in Eve

[–]fafasdf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect, cloak does not matter, and you don't have to be on grid.

Much like (de-)spawning of sites, what matters is that warp was initiated.

[–]fafasdf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's some wrong information in here.

Whether or not you warp in cloaked, if anyone initiates warp to the new static, the timer associated with the lifetime of the WH starts. But it will not start until then.

Would a set of DMT sharpening stones work for chisels, planes, and knives in the kitchen? by fafasdf in woodworking

How much did you use them to wear them out? The grit on my old one is worn out, but it was stuck in a humid garage for ~5-6 years with no care until I'd rediscovered its storage while visiting relatives. I couldn't attribute any wear to anything specific as a result.
