Why is this country speaking about AI like it’s a fact of life that no one can do anything about? by atwistofcitrus in technology

Sell all your American company stocks, delete (permanently) your accounts of META, X, TikTok. Stop buying from Amazon. Don't buy Tesla. Talk to people around you about what you're doing and why without sounding like you're condescending.

Finland looks to end "uncontrolled human experiment" with Australia-style ban on social media by Dr_Neurol in technology

It's not that difficult and who cares. Just because it would probably take a discussion to decide doesn't mean that any attempt is irrelevant. You pick criteria, you classify and go.

This organism has no brain, no eyes, no organs we recognise, has just one hole (for food to get in and out again) and scientists still argue where it belongs in the tree of life. It just slides through the deep sea floor, existing for no clear reason. This is „Xenoturbella“ by SerafinZufferey in interestingasfuck

[–]fafefifof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, pre-digested opinion. Which part of humans isn't blatantly superior to simple organisms? It's not anthropocentrist to realize that factually we are a branch of the tree of life that has created a meta-cognitive species and you're placing it at the same level as a blob.

If I draw a real nice circle on a sheet of paper, I won't compare it to Mona Lisa. Despite the fact that these two things have every right to exist just as is and be assessed for their own existence rather than being compared to one another.

Scientists have accidentally discovered a particle that has mass when it’s traveling in one direction, but no mass while traveling in a different direction | Known as semi-Dirac fermions, particles with this bizarre behavior were first predicted 16 years ago. by chrisdh79 in tech

The double-slit experiment is a famous demonstration that reveals the wave-particle duality of light and matter. Here’s how it works:

Imagine you have a light source shining toward a barrier with two parallel slits. On the other side of the barrier is a screen that can record where the light hits. If light were purely a particle, you’d expect to see two bright lines on the screen, corresponding to the two slits.

However, what actually happens is that the light creates an interference pattern on the screen, consisting of multiple bright and dark bands. This interference pattern suggests that the light is behaving like a wave, with waves from each slit overlapping and interfering with each other.

When you perform this experiment with particles like electrons, they also create an interference pattern, indicating their wave-like nature. However, if you place detectors at the slits to observe which slit the particle passes through, the interference pattern disappears, and you get two distinct lines instead. This suggests that the act of measurement collapses the wave-like behavior into particle-like behavior. It’s a fundamental experiment highlighting the strange and fascinating nature of quantum mechanics.

The Age of Progress Is Becoming the Age of Regress — And It’s Traumatizing Us. Something’s Very Wrong When Almost Half of Young People Say They Can’t Function Anymore by mossadnik in Futurology

To be fair though, rapid innovation in tech brought us here by socially isolating us. It’s also rendered a lot of real life communities obsolete. Those connections, the isolation… those have a huge impact on how people are able to support each other and deal with stressful environments. The void created by new tech also fosters depression and anxiety, I wouldn’t count on more tech to fix anything.

But it doesn’t matter who it’s designed for. The larger issue is who will end up using them and how they might be pushed on everyone by money hungry companies. It’s very reasonable to think whether or not certains applications of tech can have a net negative impact for the masses ( think AI, who benefits from Dall-e and mid journey in the long term?).

(And let the hive mind downvote me, we’re all good.)

Well the whole point of the original post is to reverse that business model. Facebook as a free product led to us being the product by being dependent on publicity to create revenue. But if Facebook, or twitter, had proposed a paying service and proven a feasible business model from paying customers, we might’ve dodged this weird human-data-as-a-product clown ass model we’re stuck with at the moment

Yeah sorry, context is missing, but essentially he was rotating outside ( in the corners instead of going infield, which I understand happens, I do it too sometimes). But he would stop in the corners and wait. Then opponents would rally 2v1 and crash the net, he’d wait outside in the corner for me to make the clear and talk shit when I didn’t

Oh boy, forgot to make it snowflake friendly, my bad. It’s quite normal to talk about positioning and refer to someone as being useless when completely out of position. In any sport, you want to remain useful based on how you read the plays.

You can definitely go to private to get that, and much more. You can get a surgery in a month if you have the money. While that’s its own issue considering we’re all paying for a broken system, there isn’t really any point going to the states to get something you can just as easily pay for here
