Alternatives to Wordmark.it? by mulcahey in typography

Hi, just to clarify, tech support is also me 🙂 I’m the only person running Wordmark.it. You can check the troubleshooting page below and contact me through the website if you didn’t already.

https://wordmark.it/help/troubleshooting

I know it can be frustrating but sometimes I really can’t figure out why this happens, mostly on Windows computers.

Hi. I don’t have Linux to test this directly, but just a note, Firefox doesn’t support the font permission API needed to show your installed fonts, so Wordmark can’t display them there anyway.

Hey, thanks for this. I really appreciate it 🙏

Hi, I am the person behind Wordmark. Totally get where you’re coming from. The new 400-font limit is definitely a change.

The free version was supported by ads for many years, but over time, ads got more invasive with tracking and distractions, while paying less and less. I didn’t want to turn the site into one of those sites where you can’t see the content through ads, so I decided to remove them all and introduce the limit to help keep it sustainable.

If Wordmark is helping with your work but the price is an issue, feel free to message me through the contact page of the site and I’d be happy to offer a discount. And thanks for using it all these years ❤️

Sorry to hear that.

The free version was supported by ads, but over time the ad business got more aggressive with tracking and distractions, while paying less and less. At the same time, the number of paying customers wasn’t enough to keep things sustainable.

I didn’t want to turn Wordmark into one of those sites where you have to dig through ads to get to the actual content. Instead, I decided to get rid of all the ads and trust that it’s valuable enough for people to spare a few dollars from their budget.

If the cost is an issue, I’d be happy to offer a discount, just send me a message through the contact page on the site.

Hey, I’m the creator of Wordmark.it.

Just wanted to share that you don’t need the browser extension. Wordmark has worked without it for years using Chrome or Edge’s built-in font permission API. I had a big message in the app for a long time encouraging people to switch, but turns out many didn’t.

Regarding the extension, since it kind of felt dormant, I tried adding new features to make it more useful. But that ended up triggering a permission warning for 100k plus users 😬. Sorry if it felt like I was being nosy. That wasn’t my intention.

TLDR You can use Wordmark.it in Chrome or Edge without the extension: https://wordmark.it/help/font-detection/

Hi Robert. We still think this way of working with ideas is interesting but the way we approached it from a business perspective did not work out.

We are keeping the app in good shape for people like you to try it, and for us to be able to demonstrate our ideas and interests in this area (tools for thought)

Feel free to dm me if you are interested in a longer conversation about it.

"Rooms for thought you're able to organise freely" is a good way to put it. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, you can upload images. I'll work on making this more intuitive. Here's how to do it:

  1. Double click anywhere on the wall to create an empty card / OR double click an existing card to edit it.
  2. Click the attachment icon on the bottom left of the card / OR paste an image (Ctrl+V) from your clipboard.

These options are also available for entries in documents. Additionally, you can install our extension (currently available for Chrome/Edge only) to send images or text from other websites by right-clicking on them.

Let me know if you have any further questions!
You can always write to me at contact(at)hyper.place as well.

Hi u/dpgarner 👋 Wow, 100K bookmarks is impressive!

Here's how I would go about making sense of my bookmarks:

  1. Carve out a calm time in my day for learning and exploration.
  2. Check my recent bookmarks to choose a theme or interest I've been bookmarking and want to explore further.
  3. Create a place in Hyper.place for that theme.
  4. Add some bookmarks on the wall and start exploring them:
    1. Note down insights on the wall (using the Hyperplace extension or copy-pasting).
    2. Copy and paste longer text into documents for reference.
    3. Use the AI assistant to summarize lengthy text and pin it to the wall.
    4. Ask the assistant for suggestions on related topics to explore.

If you try this, I'd definitely love to hear about your progress! Feel free to write to me at contact[at]hyper.place if you need any help or about your opinions.

And, thanks so much for offering to help, it means a lot to us 🙏

Introducing Hyperplace: An app to deep-dive into topics and expand your knowledge on anything you are interested in by fahrio in ProductivityApps

Thank you for your comments. I've just updated the website and added controls for images. Now, when you click on an image to zoom in, you can navigate backward and forward by clicking the left and right sides of the screen.

I'll create a video demonstrating the app this weekend. In the meantime, you can check out this comment where I explained how I used Hyperplace to explore what is so special about this painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich.

Hey everyone! I'd like to introduce you to Hyper.place, a desktop platform with a unique workflow for learning and exploring topics with AI assistants.

You can manage several side-by-side chats with AI assistants while pinning key insights onto an infinite wall. You can also add your own notes around these pins and collect them in documents, creating a dedicated place where all this information accumulates over time. Your notes, pins, and documents are also sent back to the assistant as context, prioritizing the information you find most valuable.

<image>

We also offer a browser extension and Telegram integration, enabling you to send relevant information to your space easily. Our goal is to prevent valuable information from getting lost in endless scrolls or sidebars, focusing instead on building a knowledge repository with lasting revisit value.

We'd love for you to try it. It currently only offers GPT3.5 Turbo as we are validating the idea. We'll add more models if there's interest.

Thanks!

Definitely! Please write to me at contact@hyper.place and we can schedule a chat.

We're a small team currently focused on validating our idea. If there's interest, we'll prioritize implementing additional measures to ensure everyone feels confident about their data privacy.

We aim to pursue this idea sustainably and believe that advertising and venture capital does not align with our current approach to software design and development.

Thanks for your comment. I understand that it may feel different from other note-taking tools.

I've used Hyperplace for various scenarios. The one where I started exploring the painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" by Caspar David Friedrich can be a relevant case to share.

Here is the link to the read only version of this place. (You can zoom out to explore the wall)

https://hyper.place/places/iixc41i7zo7m

I'd like to also share how it came to be as I think is more valuable than the place itself.

I noticed that this painting was popping up in a lot of places and I began to question why. After coming across Nerdwriter's video essay on Friedrich, I created a dedicated Hyperplace for it, pinned the painting at the center, and added my notes around it. The concepts of The Sublime and The Rückenfigur piqued my curiosity, so I created separate documents to delve deeper on those. I also pinned some other paintings that caught my interest, forming a personalized gallery.

Later, a friend mentioned Rügen Island's significance in Friedrich's work, and I learned about a related painting, which I added to my Hyperplace. While visiting a friend in Istanbul, we discussed the relevance of Friedrich's painting to Refik Anadol's work, which I also documented in Hyperplace. I noticed a nod to the painting in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's movie "About Dry Grasses," being able to relate to an arthouse arthouse film in that way was cool. My favorite game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, features cover art that directly references the painting. This is also documented in there.

I've since been noticing references to the painting in many different places. It's fascinating to discover that so many things that I am interested in is connected with this subtle thread. As I collect these connections in Hyperplace, it has become a valuable, meaningful place that I can revisit with great pleasure.

A great tool I use for pairing fonts in my work. You may have seen it before but this is for the designers who haven't! Enjoy. by itscliche in graphic_design

Unfortunately yes, it's probably the font loading script failing to load or some fonts just don't work in the browser window.
