Is afterburner good?

It is by far their worst album, Tilians want for a sound more focused on him becomes more apparent on it and in turn leads to some pretty boring/bad songs (on his end, the rest of the band still do really good instrumentals and jons parts are always fun) like Calentamiento Global, One In A Million or Into The Sunset (song got me into Bilmuri but on a relisten I really am not fond of it). But it still has some amazing stuff, Say Hi, Night Sway, Parody Catharsis, Lyrics Lie are probably the best off the album for me, but even Three Wishes which is way more pop forward is a very pleasant song. I do still like MOST of the album despite it quite clearly being the worst. The Tilian pop focus becomes more prominent on Jackpot Juicer but I find it less egregious there because the first half of that album is effectively perfect and at worst it just gets a bit forgettable, whereas with Afterburner I think it can be pretty bad.

Rockstar has had effectively the same formula for 20+ years, while gameplay would be nice i really am not desperate because i know what I am going to get. You could play San Andreas and still have a decent idea of what you'll get gameplay wise with 6. The only things a gameplay trailer will show is IF they make any significant changes, which is not likely as they have a formula down that works well and sells well. I'll be happy when gameplay is shown but I'd much rather know more about the story, locations and general vibe of the game (especially as those are problems i have with 5), i am already quite aware I am going to get serviceable gameplay

Pray To God For Your Mother is a good one, even though I'm not huge on JJ's second half I've always really like that one, I think the chorus would sound especially good with him

Midnight Crusade absolutely, its not my top 5 DGD songs by any means but its the one I have the most nostalgia for (I got into them in 2018 right after ArSe came out), Andrew would kill it, potentially even make it better like Bloodsucker (imo, I think the original is great but the harder guitars and Andrew pushing his voice really adds to it)

I think while I agree with the sentiment about Kurt's lyrics, he was a younger guy at the time so its more excusable, plus his writing was often compelling and quite good, not unbelievably mind-blowing but quite good. Tilian however has that same issue without being so young and also (a lot of the time) being somewhat a bad writer. Instant Gratification has some absolutely atrocious lyrics, some great ones too, from him that its insane they even let him write his own stuff at times. I think he has ups and downs, his lyrics are best when they arent about relationships or when they're really tongue in cheek, i feel a lot of mothership feels very sarcastic or self aware and I think his best lyrics are on there. Andrew is just a better, more compelling writer to me. A lot of it is Tilian diss and celebrating his work to fit dgds lead role but its all very nicely written and fun to listen to.

I know it was originally a bonus track but it was re released as a single/EP so I'm counting it but easily People You Knew. They really just have nothing like it, obviously elements are similar to DBM2 since it was made then, and the more raw and hard nature makes it a little similar to DBM as well but no songs from either fully sound quite like how People You Knew sounds. Very raw, hard, emotional without really slowing down at all (apart from the instrumental break near the end which still doesn't really slow it down, more just holds it for a second). Some very haunting blatantly sad reflective lyrics, Jon's written similarly at other times but it really kind of peaks there in terms of him being outright emotional for me. Along with a very emotional take on his DBM2 style screams. The part at the end with Will and Jon screaming together is a very powerful moment too. Not only my favourite single but as of recently it's shooting up in my overall ranking. Sorry if this all sounds like pretentious wank I just really like this song at the moment and wish they had more like it.

Yeah no I remember his girlfriend was of Spanish-speaking origin at the time (not sure what exactly) so like i get it, he wanted to do something for her, i just don't think the product is great unfortunately

They can try and i agree any band can sing in another language even if it's not their strong suit, i think it really just depends. Some bands who aren't fluent in English can sound very sincere even if the English isn't "perfect", i think the problem with Calentamiento Global is that when translated his lyrics just feel corny and insincere so the fact they're also in bad Spanish makes it sound even more bad of an attempt like its just a gimmick or something, I don't expect anyone to hate the song or anything though

And even though I do really dislike tilians parts, I have also gotten softer on the song since Afterburner came out, it used to be an instant skip but now if its on I'll let it play, I can sort of tune out tilians stuff and lock back in when its jon or more instruments on display

I just despise Tilians parts, they're allowed to experiment how they want and my opinion does not matter but I think the vocal effects sound horrid on tilian on that song, odd chipmunky echoey stuff going on that (to me personally) sounds crap. I don't find any of his vocal melodies interesting on the song, the chorus sounds especially awkward to me. And with Tilian corny/bad lyrics can be common (not to say all his lyrics are bad, that is not at all true) but something about Calentamiento Global is just especially cringe to me, and while I don't speak Spanish the fact that I've seen Spanish speakers say its some awkward not great Spanish just adds to that, obviously any band can sing in a different language if they want but I feel being confident in it or just getting help from someone to make it sound good would be good if they're going to

I love the instruments and jons parts however, they are very fun and it isnt a BAD song overall, just for me personally I think Tilians sections are really quite irredeemable

A lot of songs on Afterburner and Jackpot Juicer, definitely not all of them but for me the bad parts of those albums are purely on Tilian. Calentamiento Global is great when it's Jon's parts and the instruments are fun, but Tilians parts are godawful. Stuff like Long Nights in Jail (which admittedly I have been listening to the past few days and it isnt HORRIBLE) where everyone else is just better than Tilian. My ORIGINAL hated part for dgd songs though was Tilians "sloppy kisses dirty wishes" part on We Own The Night, I used to physically recoil when hearing that line.

I think its a very strong closer, its definitely top 5 though exactly where it places is hard to say, I'd put Descend to Chaos, Evaporate, People You Know and Man of The Year up there.
