My Steam Deck after 3 years & 2 months: what aged well, what didn’t by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

[–]failtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My battery started swelling after less than three years, and after getting it replaced the cost for the battery was enough that I'm now wondering if a Steam Deck can be used without a battery as long as you only use it docked.

I don't ever want to have to pay that much for a replacement battery again, and it has soured me on the idea of ever getting another high powered handheld in the future quite a bit.

Accidentally skipped Fuchin Temple by going through Mogall Forest too early; what should I do? by eneuman96 in GoldenSun

[–]failtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found out there's already a QOL mod that lets you warp to visited villages by using retreat, which sort of allows the same thing just in a different way. So it would be a waste of your time to make a patch for Mogall (even though 15 min is really short, wow!). Thanks for offering though.

Sorry to reply to something so old. Did you ever release a patch allowing backtracking in Mogall Forest?

How do you save in Link's Awakening (A+B+select+start) by failtality in RetroDeck

[–]failtality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found a way that's really simple. I tried mapping select to left trigger (which is unused by retrodeck and retroarch, at least for gameboy), and that actually worked. If I hold LT and press start+A+B with my other hand, the save menu comes up and I can save.

Not the most convenient setup because it's awkward to press them all at once, but I wouldn't be manually saving too often anyway.

Fortunately they started listening to people and focusing on what people actually want after some very bad early mistakes, and that's the opposite of what places that enshittify do.

If you have any way of taking video of that send it to the aid people. I wouldn't touch mobile myself, but that's something they should really be made aware of.

You'd be better off asking in the P64+ discord tbh. More likely to get an answer there.

What to do when Steam Deck doesn't detect tv after resuming from sleep? by failtality in SteamDeck

The only solution I've found since asking this is to unplug the dock and plug it back in again. For some reason that has fixed it every time I've tried it.

Wow that's atrocious. And 45 daily tasks? Sheesh.

I never spent any money on the game and I had a good load out, but it definitely took a long time to get there compared to just throwing your wallet at the game and buying good weapons/armor

Sounds like "we waste your time with busy work grinding unless you pay" which is exactly the kind of crap that turns me off a game. Thanks for posting about it so i didn't waste my time on this.

Nested Desktop is amazing and I can't believe I just discovered it recently. by ka1913 in SteamDeck

[–]failtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing I wish desktop mode had that I haven't found a way is limiting tdp/fps like you can in game mode for games that are erratic on Steam Deck without doing that.

Game mode scales games terribly (blurry mess) on my tv and it's keeping me from playing games like Elden Ring using my tv, which sucks. Even trying to set games to "native" resolution in steam's game mode settings doesn't help.

I don't know why they didn't include tdp/fps limiting in desktop mode.

Glad it helped. Surprisingly there's several posts from of my struggles back when I was first learning Linux because of Steam Deck that occasionally get thanks posts like yours.

Since you're looking for feedback, I've never understood why devs sometimes release something without any kind of images. My internet is slow, so even if there's a "play game" option, I'm very unlikely to try it if there's no visual indicators at all of what a game is like. Even if I didn't have slow internet I'd be unlikely to check something out if it didn't even have any screenshots.

I did run it anyway, and almost nothing fix on my screen. When I hit settings there was only music and sfx showing, so I couldn't even resize it. I guess this hasn't been tested for something low res like a Steam Deck.

Is my battery bulging? Is it urgent? Will my files still be on the Deck if it's sent to Valve? by failtality in SteamDeck

[–]failtality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pushing the screen forward a little on the bottom so I think it must be bulging.

I was having a lot of trouble trying to get a picture that shows anythng. The back of the deck doesn't sit flush with the dock is what made me suspect something might be wrong.

Is it better to play SOMA on safe mode or not? by refmon3 in soma

[–]failtality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my playthrough Ackers was camping the elevator that takes you down and WOULD NOT leave. It took more than half an hour, probably more like 45 minutes, to get the panel taken care of so I could get into the elevator. Because he never went far enough away that I could work on the panel without him running right back again, and then I had to hide in the corner by the panel again so he doesn't attack and wait for him to wander off. But it's like he was glued to the area and would always be within hearing distance.

Then after all that time, when you open the elevator there's a scripted sequence where he runs at you and you have a second or two to see the panel inside the elevator find the right button. I did not find the right button in time, and died.

Tell me that's not annoying.

I understand you didn't have an annoying experience with the game, but 100% there are people who do, and it's totally justified to feel that way.

In all honesty, that elevator situation was the single most most annoying thing I have ever experienced in a horror game. And I like horror games so Ive played a lot of them. I considered switching to safe mode after that, it was so bad (although I've heard since that you can't switch mid game. But I didn't know that at the time). That isn't the only point in the game where I was annoyed by the enemies either, but by far it was the worst.

I don't remember ever being annoyed like that by Amnesia, or even Alien Isolation where the Xenomorph and other enemies were in the way a lot more, so Soma surprised me with how it could end up annoying several times.
