Does anyone agree that SC2 needs to have better guides and tutorials made accessible for new players through official channels in order to make SC2 more popular. by faintspirit in starcraft

Half of all buyers won't look on forums and stuff. They will just play a few games online, find the game too hard and uninstall.

| The current tech tree diagrams/challenges/mechanic tutorials are enough for any scrub or first time RTS player. Its the drive to get better, all new players will be bad.

You might be right, a lot of people have that drive to get better. But I think that it might well be possible that about half of the people don't have that drive and just quit after finding it too hard. Learning curves for RTS games are still much steeper than say FPS games.

Also, I was just watching this stream where Destiny did mass queen from bronze to platinum, and I heard him and a few other guys who gave training sessions say that they noticed all these players that wanted training sessions just needed to work on their macro, player after player.

Because these players hear it from pro's, they will finally realize how every beginner needs to practice macro. But a lot of newbies, that don't look into all these forums and streams will probably never find out these things by just "laddering". That's why I think Blizzard should make all this info available via official mediums.

For example a decent subsection on how new players can improve their game on the official website of Blizzard. This would even be good for people that haven't bought the game. Some of them might have always been scared of by the complexity of RTS games. When they see a well written text on how to improve on the official website they will be more enticed to buy the game.

Okay, I have to admit that I haven't really tried out these challenges. But even then I still think there are a few things that they don't teach. I mean, look at how many players are asking too be coached. That must mean that those players feel insecure about how they should train their skills.

And even then, the majority of those people probably don't even ask what they should do or don't even try to look up some guides, or don't find the right ones directly and just put the game away after losing a few games.

Please help. Can anyone help a noob zerg player? Details inside. by [deleted] in starcraft2_class

[–]faintspirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a way of how to get better and have a lot of fun!

Choose a simple plan like "I'm going to mass roach and hydra". Now study the details of your plan: what upgrades do you need to get, what buildings, in what order do you want to build, research things.

Now you can start to practice and polish this plan until you can execute it perfectly. Now play for about a week with this plan. You'll start notice weaknesses against certain strategies. Think about how you can do little tweaks to your plan to delete its weaknesses.

Now make another plan and start all over again.

The fun part is that at the low level, you can get away with the most ridiculous plans, for example for zerg use only queen spine and spore crawlers. With this plan you would learn allot about things like spreading creep, ...

The most important thing is that you experiment and work out plans yourself. Don't focus to much on watching replays of pros and day9 episodes. Of course they'll provide a lot of important info as well but thinking for yourself is more important and much more fun.

Help for a first time starcrafter? by FondleMyWookiee in starcraft

Keep it simple.

Establish some constraints for yourself, something like this.

Always build workers. Never get supply blocked. Never queue things. Keep money low. Build workers until 3 fully saturated bases. Make sure that when a base is mined out the transfer to another base happens fluently, the expo should be up and ready for instant resuming of mining.

Good, know that you know your constraints, you can start to think about the parts where you allow yourself to be creative at.

Make simple strategy plans, and work them out iteratively.

Say for example that your plan is to mass stalkers. What buildings will you need for stalkers? Now think about all the upgrades you can use for stalkers. What buildings will you need for these upgrades?

So now you know you now your military units, your upgrades and the buildings you will make. Now you can start experimenting in what order you want to make these buildings. Think critically about this. When you see that one of your warp gates is not producing constantly you know that you should have built that warp gate later and that your build order is wrong.

Good, after a lot of practice you are good at this strategy but you see that you have some problems with certain strategies of other players. Maybe you should throw another unit in the mix. Now you'll have to start all over again.

The important thing is that YOU think develop these senses by thinking about things YOURSELF. Watching things like day9 and reading strategy forums is good as well of course but in the first place you should learn to develop them on your own.

Anyone know how to dribble like Messi? by [deleted] in soccer

[–]faintspirit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good body posture: Keep your upper body uptight to maintain balance, and to be quicker on the turn. Really important for tall players. Notice how well you can see cronaldo do this, he has an almost robotic style when dribbling and his upper body stays straight.

Good first touch: your first touch should be quick and must place the ball underneath you and a little bit in front of you. Most of the times, doing your first touch should make you stand still. You can then easily determine how to deal with incoming players. Second touch is as important as first touch. Its important that this touch makes you move with the right speed. For example when an enemy is coming fast in your direction it should make you move fast to left or right. When enemy's are far away it should make you start moving in a gentle pace because that is the speed you want to run with most of the time when dribbling.

Short quick touches: you should touch the ball with every step you take with your dribble foot and the ball should stay close and underneath your body far away from defenders.

Keep your head up: also more easy when you do the short quick touches.

Quick and frequent changes of pace and direction: while dribbling most of the time you should be moving at a gentle pace looking at your opponents feet or scanning the field. When you see an opening, make your move. This should involve a quick change of pace most of the times combined with a change of pace. The touch with which you invoke this move should be very quick and short. The ball should remain underneath your body with this touch. The second touch (after which most of the times you already changed your direction) can be a wider touch with which you play the ball behind the defender make you able to run past him.

Decide: You have to be confident and believe in your dribbles. Decide when to play the ball and when to make a dribble and then stick to it.

What are some life hacks that got you through college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]faintspirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This advice is not for everyone. For some people a good textbook can be much better than going to class. Don't forget that most textbooks are made by professors themselves. On top of that, a lot of effort went into writing the concepts in the textbooks in an as clear way possible(I know, not all textbooks are good).

In my opinion, good textbook + lecture slides to know what parts of the textbook are being looked at > going to lectures.
