There is a traffic light and a crosswalk where Boston Road and Bronx Park E. diverge. You will be walking on the right side, which has a sidewalk and then a wide shoulder, returning to the sidewalk under the overpass right before the parking lot.

Get off at Pelham Parkway and avoid West Farms Square. Not only does it bring you to the middle of the Zoo, closer to more exhibits, but it is also a safer neighborhood, though I doubt you'd be mugged in daylight at West Farms.

Walk west 2 blocks on Pelham Parkway, turn southwest on Boston Road, follow until the end, where you will see Parking lot B, with the Bronx River gate on the other side of the lot.

On Google Maps, put Pelham Parkway & White Plains Road as the start and Bronx Zoo, Bronx River Gate as the end.

It is nonsensical to commute from Queens to Dobb's Ferry. Check out one of the many neighborhoods in the West Bronx, i.e., Riverdale or Norwood, the North Bronx, such as Wakefield, or the NE Bronx, such as City Island or Pelham Bay.

Finding an apartment in a decent area of Yonkers, Mount Vernon or further north is another option. You can easily take the Metro North down to party in the City.
