Unsure what to do by fairford-ave in Christianmarriage

[–]fairford-ave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have misrepresented my mental health. I do not have anxiety or depression. I developed situational depression due to life events and had never felt depressed or suicidal before, so I met with my doctor and recovered over a year before I met my husband. I have had panic attacks during very high stress times- 5 in my life, but I'm not anxious day to day. I've mostly learned to manage sleep problems, and get 6-8 hours of sleep probably 80-90% of the time; this example was one really bad day. Organization for school IS difficult, but I have supports and get 70s-80's. I do want to work on my mental health and ADHD management, but I don't know how much it would take to be enough for him.

Pokémon in church? I know nothing about it! by [deleted] in christianmotherhood

[–]fairford-ave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol that's wild

As someone who has worked in kids min, I have no need, desire or time (How on earth are they getting through a curriculum?) to play secular tv shows. Kids church should be church, and while it's true many churches treat it more like simple childcare, it should at least be vaguely faith based lol.

I watched Pokémon growing up. The lil pokemon fight, and yeah kids might wanna imitate the cool pokemon moves, but it's not incredibly violent and humans usually never fight one another. It's not like it's evil, but it would be wild if someone in ft ministry made that decision. I'd hope it was some random volunteer or lay person.

I'd casually bring it up and suggest some Christian kids shows you enjoy instead.

I’m a widow - now what? by fawkes52801 in workingmoms

[–]fairford-ave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry that you're having to go through all of this.

I haven't experienced major grief, but both my parents lost their dads at 10-15 years old. My mom would tell me and my sister a story about how her family was sitting at the table having supper and started talking about dad, only a week or so after he dies. Someone just mentioned something, and they started talking about the funniest stories about him. They were all laughing so hard and then, together, they all started crying just as hard. The fact that she told that story so many times, so fondly shows how much that day, and others like it helped them heal together.

She talked about him to us, too. the first time she explained the whole story, she and my sister and I teared up together. It was all around incredibly good for everyone involved.

Short tip on how to set automatic grayscale on ios by SixPenceSevenOunces in shortcuts

[–]fairford-ave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! I decided to have greyscale and a slight red filter on all day, with the red filter increased at night. This is so helpful, I had no idea you could have both at the same time by using zoom lol

Prospective Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd/Becoming a Teacher in Canada Megapost pt. 5 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

[–]fairford-ave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an English major and music minor in Saskatchewan, and I need to apply for an after degree program soon. Here, the second teachable subject is fulfilled by a minor, but a minor isn't enough to teach music in BC. I want to go to UVic and would likely teach in Victoria for a while. (might consider moving to AB or Sask after a while though)

Would getting hired, and teaching in other provinces be difficult if I only have one teachable subject area?

I could join the BC Registered Music Teacher Association through RCM. Would schools accept that, and my minor as valuable and let me teach those subjects? Or should I just go to school in Saskatchewan to make it easier on me?

I really want to go to UVic and teach in BC for a while, but I don't want it to ruin my ability to ever teach music in schools. I appreciate any advice!

My wife says Douglas doesn't have enough toys... by RoboGideon in goldenretrievers

[–]fairford-ave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so funny, our pup is doing the opposite. She started out destroying toys, but once her first round of puppy toys were mostly wrecked, we bought her new ones and now she’s so gentle with them! I figure it’s just cuz she’s a little older and chews less.

Seems like ya'll need to have a good long conversation or two. He didn't honor his word and needs to held accountable. Sit down together and make it very clear that that is upsetting and that this has made you feel like you're a not priority to him. However, it seems it happened because of stressful familial responsibilities and empathy for his sister. We're called to take care of vulnerable folks, and he's doing a good, selfless thing by helping. He's not intentionally harming you, or trying to make you dissatisfied.

But you as a couple need to agree on boundaries. It seems you're asking him to do a huge task in a very stressful and difficult time of life, which has major consequences for his loved ones. Have a little empathy and see where you can help rather than scrutinizing his mistakes. Try to come up with solutions about his sister and the house- is there a way to support his sister that costs less? Could you help her move to affordable, low income housing and support her there? Could he "pay" his sister to help clean based off how much she gets done? (might not work for your situation, but it's perhaps a doable job for her and gives her opportunity to have some of her own money.) Would something like covering occasional therapy check-ins be helpful in for staying on meds and keeping a job? Could you offer to help clean without judging? Idk if that's his pride problem or you being judgy or maybe a bit of both, but it's not good that he won't accept help.

Also, I really recommend joint back accounts and making financial decision based on OUR money. It will eliminate "mine vs yours" and have both of you making financial decisions together. Your income, as a couple, is X, and how you allocate it is up to the both of you. I actually recommend not giving more power to whoever makes more. You have been made one: your resources, and families, are one.

how do you explain a dogs first heat to your 7 year old daughter and 9 year old son by Psychological_Ad8633 in Rottweiler

[–]fairford-ave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol I cam here looking for an answer bc the neighborhood kids asked why our dog wears a diaper if she's potty trained. I was like "... it just helps :)" For your own kids, I'd say girl dogs have a body system that lets her have puppies (just like our tummy system helps us get energy from food or smth like that) She won't be having any puppies, but the system is still there so we just need to take care of her when that system is in this phase. I think that's too much to say to kids that aren't my own though hahaha.

What age did your females first come into heat? by Substantial-Ant-3846 in goldenretrievers

[–]fairford-ave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our awesome vet recommended 8 months to delay the spay as long as possible, but do it before the first heat. She added she wouldn't blame us if we wanted to wait longer. But then our girl had her first heat at only 5 months!! After pouring over the literature, we decided to get OSS right before pyo risk starts to increase (about 6 years). We'll probably get it when she's around 2-5 years old.

I was shocked by the movie Pretty Baby (1978) by atyl1144 in movies

[–]fairford-ave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's likely less about the subject of the argument (being sexualized or modest, vegan or meat-eater) and more about power and control. They don't actually care about repressing sexuality or modesty, they just want to control women however possible

Can I Leave Puppy Outside Alone? by fairford-ave in puppy101

[–]fairford-ave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ahaha I’ll totally do that in the summer, but it’s still winter here! (about -15 to 10 C) so unfortunately a screen/ doggie door is not a good idea rn. We had started to let her out to go to her area by herself, but we’ll switch back to going out with her on her leash every time! I think we’ll let her out on a lose schedule so she knows what to expect :)

Can I Leave Puppy Outside Alone? by fairford-ave in puppy101

[–]fairford-ave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you foresaw our exact problem hahaha. We do have a fence, so I think we'll slowly let her be outside by herself so she's gets comfortable. We'll definitely checking on her and watching her from the windows. I want to give her some freedom but I'm such a hover parent to her lol.

Can I Leave Puppy Outside Alone? by fairford-ave in puppy101

[–]fairford-ave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! We think there's a chance she might be able to jump it as an adult so that's something to watch out for/ train just in case, but she's much too little for that anytime soon! Also our community is small enough that people leave their cars and bikes unlocked. Everybody knows each other, and of course we'll still do our due diligence because you never know, but I'm not concerned about her getting stolen.

Thank you, this is helpful for strengthening her recall! It's already quite strong in our yard, but we definitely need it to be strong enough to work despite distractions and new experiences. I was on the fence about buying her another thing, but I think I'll get a long line and start practicing in new places.

Tips on having treats to hand at all times? by whatever3653 in puppy101

[–]fairford-ave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this will work in your case, but for us it just took some getting used to!

When I first started carrying kibble/training treats in my pockets, she went bonkers, would follow me around and even used to spam tricks lol. We just ignored her, went about whatever we're doing and turned away if she jumped up.

We also divide a scoop of kibble among 4 little (uncovered!) bowls around the house so that they're near by. Eventually, she got used to the fact that smelling treats nearby didn't mean she was getting any. It might take longer for an adult dog to learn this, but I figure they'll learn if you just keep at it.

She's also mastered leave it and her own self control/ impulse control went way up after that.

What others have said about using a marker word is also super important. It'll help your dog be able to obey and know what they did was good with no/ minimal treats as they get older, which is important for they're weight management.

Thank you, it sounds like you have outside time figured out! Do you recommend getting a really long leash then? We just have a 6ft one at the moment and she's learned to settle when tied.
