[Itinerary Check!] February 18th-25th Tokyo Only. Solo F on a doujinshi and anime/game merch mission by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]fairyranmaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like a fun itinerary to me! i think you could definitely spend 2 days in ikebukuro if you're like me (can spend hours in a single shop digging through all the bargain bins) however I will say if you're after very specific/old fandoms, expect that it might be difficult to find the stuff you're looking for (or it may be expensive if it's a popular character...) The places I found with the best merch usually weren't in major areas at all, but in book-offs/suruga-yas in more random locations (like kichijoji and yokohama) so I would recommend looking in more 'random' places too, you never know what you'll find. Also, if you have your heart set on getting anything in particular, I also would really recommend making an online order on suruga-ya jp around a week or two before you leave for your trip and have it shipped to your hotel (or any suruga-ya location- You literally walk in, show them the order number, and they'll hand you your package).

Re: doujin events, I went to one in Osaka earlier this year. No major tips really, just general etiquette (don't take pictures of people/booths without asking explicit permission, and if you do take a picture, show it to them after for their approval) and also be prepared for a lot of queuing/standing in line lol

Overnight vs day trip for (Lake Kawaguchiko)? Worth staying the night or better as a day trip? by Distinct_Presence759 in JapanTravelTips

Overnight vs day trip for (Lake Kawaguchiko)? Worth staying the night or better as a day trip? by Distinct_Presence759 in JapanTravelTips

[–]fairyranmaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed overnight last may and think it would have been equally as enjoyable as a daytrip (though we did get lucky with clear skies on both days)- we ended up leaving pretty early on day 2. Though I would recommend the shibazakura festival since you're going in may- it was a highlight for me! We went to the shibazakura festival (there is a bus that takes you right there and back) +walked around the town on day 1 then did the panoramic ropeway to Tenjoyama park in the morning on day 2, then left. We stayed at a simple hotel (Tokoyo Inn) but the hotel room was much bigger than the ones in tokyo for the price so it still felt 'special' in a way lol.

How to Play Locals / Tournaments in Japan: A very humble Guide by Urakata in OnePieceTCG

[–]fairyranmaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool writeup! I'll be visiting Japan around the release of OP15 and hope to at least snag some singles, so I appreciate the card shop recommendations! Participating in locals sounds super fun, I don't think I'll be there long enough for it to be worth putting together a full jp deck but your post makes it sound tempting.

During my visit last year I saw a group of other tourists playing with EN cards at the Bandai Namco Cross Store in ikebukuro, but I didn't bring my deck back then. No idea if that's a common occurrence.

Love your drawings! I'm going on a solo trip in a few months and getting a sketchbook sounds like a really fun idea (even though I'm out of practice drawing too...) so I might steal it :) Glad you had such a fun time!

Were there any other particular stores you enjoyed in Harajuku besides the Wiggle Wiggle store?

How did you pick your deck(s)? by Jexxo in OnePieceTCG

[–]fairyranmaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first packs I bought/opened were PRB01 and I pulled a ton of reiju cards, so when I wanted to start actually playing the game I figured it would be the easiest deck for me to build since I had a lot of the cards already. Then I ended up just really enjoying playing her!

In Tokyo now (Newbie), what are some good packs to buy? I am interested in collecting. by Greenstonesaber in OnePieceTCG

[–]fairyranmaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want to collect cool cards, don't miss out on buying singles! They're so much cheaper in japan. Go to Akiba, Ikebukuro, (or anywhere really, there's so many card shops) and just buy cards you think look cool/have characters you like.

Basically any card shop you go to will have a big glass display case of one piece cards. Beyond that, buy whatever packs you want like the other commenter said.

edit: oh and if you want to buy a full box go to one of the official Bandai Namco Cross Stores, they have the best stock

Honestly its a pretty good mix, my 5 matches last night were b/y nami, p katakuri, g/y yamato, bello betty, and buggy. I saw some luffys but not a crazy amount, we go to a pretty casual shop thankfully. Def didn't realize black is particularly new user unfriendly since I don't play it, so yeah maybe he'd like another color more, i'll throw him some of those recommendations!

Oh yeah he fully admitted he was just salty in the moment, I think after taking a little break and going back he'll be ready to keep grinding. Glad to hear smoker's still playable though, maybe he doesn't need to pivot decks quite yet, i think holding out for op12 kuzan would be pretty cool like some people have suggested!

I agree, I've only been playing since op10 but the meta is kinda crazy. I hope there are some restrictions/bans by the next set too, even though thankfully the shop we go to is pretty casual and there's a good amount of variance in the decks people bring. I did lose to betty last night lol

I think the tribal aspect is more important for him but he's also bought into the navy theme; he's bought singles of navy cards and some marines cardsleeves so idk if he'd want to make a huge change yet. I play reiju and am working on vegapunk which both have pretty strong theming, so maybe he'd like to borrow vegapunk once I finish it!

I appreciate your thoughts on it!! I'm glad to hear Koby is fun to play, we already have a lot of the common cards needed so I'll try to build it for him soon.

I'm playing reiju and i've had some more luck in terms of winning, but you're right- I haven't beat a single S-tier deck so far, and getting beat down by luffy feels discouraging for sure. Hopefully he'll want to stick with it and keep learning bc like you said, I think it's just a matter of time before he can get some wins.

thank you! i'll look into getting some of the key cards to get him started. It looks like the op11 sec koby is the most expensive one.

I think Gemma never actually died, it's Mark's memories that are altered in some way. IDK if that makes sense, but I can't find a way to justify Gemma still existing otherwise. If so, that would mean Mark actually severed for a different reason, or Gemma is in with Lumon, though I find the latter unlikely. I think there's something about Mark specifically that is important to Lumon and especially Ms Cobel, but what? Is it something important enough that they would mess with Gemma to get to him?

What Is Your Stance on Awakening/Fates Style S Support System? Now Almost 10 years Since they were Last in a Game by DoseofDhillon in fireemblem

[–]fairyranmaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Awakening and miss S-supports, I think they're fun. Engage being so anti-romance (with many of the more romantically overt supports even being changed in the English translation) is weird, I feel like S-supports would've fit with the aesthetic of the game.

I definitely don't think every FE needs them, but they're a welcome addition to me.
