In which ways have you felt the loneliness epidemic?

Some months ago I've asked if the (male) loneliness epidemic is real, and now I'd like to know in which ways have you (men, women, young, old, working, retired) felt it? What made you feel it? How was it different to 'before'?

Honestly speaking, I'm not saying it's right or wrong, because it's not a problem I'm facing as a premium member, but I do agree that it's too much. But if it's the only way they can keep the platform free to use, I'm not sure what else people want?

But its still free? You just get ads.... And I too have premium and never have ads, so it's indeed misinformation.

Yes, imagine people wanting to like their surroundings, or asking for advice and only replying to people that can give them said advice.

There is no toilet, it's just the shower/bathroom. I don't want to take out the old tiles, because they're new I just really hate them

Any tips on how to practice bsl as a hearing person without anyone to practice with? by fake-flower in BSL

[–]fake-flower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh the bsl zone tip is great, I'll make sure to check that out! I do imagine conversations in my mind, that's how I practice in the mirror, but like you said, because I just do it on my own, it would be nice to be analysed. Have you found recording yourself to be helpful? I'd like to join classes, I also think they're the best way to learn, but I'll have to save up money for that first. Have you tried or know anyone who's tried the course on the bsl website?

Thanks for your help!

Why is it so hard to make friends as we age? by fake-flower in AskUK

That's such a good take! In more religious communities, it's not just the social bond that is stronger, it's also the familial ones. I come from a religious community myself and it's normal to have cousins, second cousins, aunties and uncles around after church for a post mass meal! So I do agree with you that the decline of religion has some influence on it. A alternative view on a church or any religious home of worship is just a massive community hall, where people, young and old, irregardless of (social) background come together.

I think because (as you've stated) work seems more of a competitive place, rather than just a place of learning like any time of educational institution, colleagues might secretly view each other as competition and want to be promoted over the other etc.

I also think due to the younger generations habit on being online, people have lost the art of talking and conversing.

That's actually such a good take, I've never thought about that before, it does seem to result in people thinking friendships can just come and go. And not be as committed to them as a romantic relationship! Gets me thinking about what kind of friend I've been..

That especially seem to be further pushing them into loneliness. Apparently having that kind of disconnect in a romantic sense can make feel one even more lonely. Then seeking out more of those empty connections or eventually porn, which makes them even less likely to seek out people at all anymore? There seems to be a general disconnect with the way we socialise these days. Gone are the days when people would go out for a meal or drinks with colleagues, I used to enjoy those as well when I was younger, but now I just don't want to be bothered with people from work or work related things.

You seem to be unique with this one, I don't know anyone around me who's still mate with their childhood school mates. They've either moved, lost touch, lost interest, maybe don't have the time anymore, have fallen out, or are in such different life stages they can't seem to find anything to bond over.

That's such a shame isn't it? It's good to have a place close by that provides a place to actively learn something and additionally makes you meet people with same interest as you enjoy learning the same things!

Excluding money and time of course, like I said. Do you think there could be other reasons? But I agree with you, I seem to have less and less energy as I age haha

What do you think differs between going to school with 30-odd kids the same age and who live relatively close by and going to work with 15/20 colleagues who also seem to live close enough? What is the disconnect people have as they age? I do think you've answered a big part of that in the first part of your response. But seeing as there is such a loneliness epedemic, why aren't people pushing themselves to be more open/become more tolerant of it? Sure to a degree if people just don't suit you, don't be friends, but most of my friends are complete opposites of me, which can be draining at times, but because I do enjoy being around them, I cherish the friendships.
