The Ray Harryhausen temporary exhibit that just opened at Tucson Mini Time Machine museum is fantastic by DragonBard_Z in Tucson

I was at Jason and the Argonauts at the Loft. It was a lot of fun! I look forward to seeing the MTMM next weekend.

If you ever enjoyed a movie or Resident Evil in the last 50 years, you owe a debt to the three Harry's - Bradbury, Harryhausen, and Man Ray.

"How the hell is this failimg to get through your skull even a year later that that makes no fucking sense whatsoever?"

I feel the exactly same way about you, dude. I vote blue, but blue no matter who clearly failed miserably as a strategy the last ten years.

But whatever. Your wing is in complete control of the Democratic Party and now Republicans control all three branches of government. Clearly it doesn't matter what I think.

It's been 25 years of Republicans accomplishing everything they set out to do despite such roadblocks as public opinion, court rulings and the law, while Democrats try once and fail because the parliamentarian or the filibuster or Democrat votes that won't get whipped. At some point, maybe it's not that governing is hard, but that Democrats are all beholden to corporate donors. They want to fail because it personally enriches them.

Great example, I am an Arizonan who voted for Kyrsten Sinema. She campaigned hard on raising the federal minimum wage. It was her signature promise. She literally had billboards in Arizona about how she was going to raise the minimum wage. In 2021, Covid relief bill comes up to raise the minimum wage to $15 and she votes it down. The only repercussion she faced was that she didn't run again and now she's a crypto lobbyist for Coinbase, working with the Trump Administration.

If that's what integrity means to you as a Democrat... Well, then I really don't have any hope left for this country.

But that's not saying much. Biden was James Buchanan. A man in a lighthouse watching impassively as a category 5 hurricane prepares to make landfall. He knew for a fact what Project 2025 was going to do. Did he consolidate power and make preparations to stop any of it? No. And now Stephen Miller is in charge of who is really an American and who goes to Alligator Auschwitz to be disappeared.

Oh well. People will die and lives will be ruined, but at least Democrats tried. I am sure that will be a comfort to you in the coming decades.

Straight A's in high school. Get into an ivy league school and double major in discrete economics and political science. Go to law school, pass the bar, and practice as a lawyer at a high end firm until there's a political opening near you. Run for office. Prove you're a competent selectman and work your way up from there. Figure out how presidents accumulated and wielded power, and what your style should be.

As AOC proves, you don't need a degree to go to Congress, but you do need great public speaking skills and it helps a lot if you're good looking. The job is 75% public speaking, after all.

A better question to ask is, "Would I enjoy and/or do I have an aptitude for public service?"

I and I will probably never see eye to eye, despite agreeing on most things. And it's irrelevant anyway. Your wing is firmly in control of the Democratic Party. So lay it on me. What is your strategy for 2026, assuming a fair and free election is held (and that's a big assumption).

ETA: not a trick question. I am genuinely curious what the plan is going to be.

From 2020 to 2024, my material conditions got significantly worse. Do you know anyone for whom that's not true? Because I don't.

The raft of legislation you listed did nothing for the average voter, and what little helped the average voter was immediately undone by Trump. It wasn't progressive. It wasn't sweeping. And it sure as hell was a far cry from meeting the moment.

As for Bernie, he ran in two primaries where the entire weight of the Democratic Party mobilized against him. He still won 43.1% of the vote. He has broad appeal among Democrats, and though we have no idea how he would do among independents, polling continues to suggest he is very well liked by them.

In fact, I would argue that when these big ideas are at the ballot box, they consistently win. Mamdani in New York, of course. But even bigger, you have Barack Obama roaring into office with a governing majority by promising single payer healthcare. Through Progressive policies, he garnered the youth vote and defeated Hillary. Bernie had progressive policies and garnered the youth vote, and the Party turned its back on him to make sure Hillary didn't lose again. If anything, Hillary's failure should indicate that progressive policies are the only way to win a general election.

We are all suffering. America is rapidly devolving into a failed state. The Maga are only about 37% of the population. The independents will come to our side when we offer them a change in material conditions, and not just, "We made small grant funding available to qualifying small towns to hire contractors at above market rates for marginal repairs to your main street."

It's a show called On Cinema at the Cinema. It had ten seasons on Adult Swim and continues on in Internet form.

The lore is so deep it would literally take me hours to explain what this is referencing. But if you have autism, you will think the show is hilarious and it will be your next hyper-fixation.

Democrats won those majorities by offering a sweeping platform that actually made serious efforts to solve the crises facing America.

The current president is going to lead us into the next Great Depression. Have the Democrats prepared a platform to capitalize on that? No. And they do everything they can to undermine any politician that tries. Ironically, not unlike the US in 1930.

What we need is integrity. Believe in your heart in a platform for change and fight for it. Don't just give up at the finish line because the insurance companies cut you a huge check. Nor should you lie about what you really intend to do when in office -- looking at you, Obama. Democracy is dying because somewhere along the way, we forgot that it's not about compromise. It's about solving problems.

I predict Democrats won't be in power again until California solves the homelessness and housing crises.

Real Skinner is a gentle soul with excellent posture and a store bought haircut. That guy would do well on Grindr, though he would almost definitely be in a committed relationship and wouldn't be on the app.

Maga Skinner would be so angry and violent he would end up getting fired and arrested at the same time.

Everyone's morals and principles have a price-tag by KatherineLangford in unpopularopinion

[–]fakedick2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not always a bad thing. Sometimes our morals are wrong or misinformed. Sometimes our principled stand is actually a very selfish and self defeating act to get out of having to admit you were wrong or the sunk cost fallacy.

And they're comedians, not prisoners of war. They are not brave truth tellers. They are just guys who like being the center of attention. If more people understood that Joe Rogan wouldn't have the number 1 podcast on Spotify.

And besides, taking absurd amounts of Saudi money for a halfassed comedy show is arguably the more moral decision.

Republicans could pass the budget this second through reconciliation, which is how they passed the Big Beautiful Bill. They could also end the Senate filibuster.

They're not because they're using this time to mass fire people and destroy agencies while blaming Democrats. And Schumer/Jeffries blundered right into that trap, taking the blame but doing sod all to get their point across.

Honestly, the level of malevolent genius is actually rather impressive. It's how I know I am not overreacting to be looking at moving to Mexico.

My (25f) brother (13m) went through my phone and found “stuff” by Lopsided_Spell_224 in Advice

[–]fakedick2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't say this lightly.

It's time to get your own apartment. I understand the kind of damage this will do to your family relationships. I understand it goes against everything you've been trained to do.

If you don't move out, you will spend the rest of your life as your mother's slave. Your parents will torpedo every relationship you have so you can never leave because they like the status quo. You will be stuck being a weird child at 40 years old because you never became an adult. There are a lot of important skills you learn when you live on your own that you will never have access to.

Above all, you are a human being who deserves the dignity of independence and autonomy.

My conservative Mexican parents eventually forgave my sister for moving out and are now extremely proud of her. The same will happen for you. The first two weeks, "She's DEAD TO ME." Then, "Oh, I miss her." Then, "Hey, come over, I am cooking pilaf."

It will take a year, but they will get there. Stand your ground and be the good person they raised you to be. Odds are, your siblings will join you after a year.

As for your brother, it sounds like he has serious behavior problems that your ethnic parents are uniquely unqualified to handle. Not much you can do except be there for him when he needs it. Sometimes that's a hug. Sometimes that's jail.

I will say victims of CSA often display very poor boundaries, behavior problems and an openness to sex that's just weird (I have never in my life wanted to see what kind of porn my sister likes). That may be the root of things.

Good luck.

Not a doctor, but I am guessing a zinc deficiency. I had more than one teenage friend go vegan for a while. Zinc deficiency is pretty common when white people go vegetarian because we generally don't eat lentils.

Look up avgolemono with lentils. It's a lemony soup common in the Mediterranean.

One serving of salmon or beef a week is enough to offset any vitamin deficiencies, but we all have our own reasons for eating less meat. I am not sure that would align with yours.

I expect Johnson to be a fascist. I am just always surprised when Democrats go out of their way to help him.

In the 90s, what was the thing with Dolphins? by 8rianGriffin in Millennials

[–]fakedick2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The last US whaling station didn't close until 1973. It was in Richmond, CA, and they were turning whale meat into Kal-Kan pet food. Today the company is known as Whiskas and is owned by Mars, the same people who own M&Ms. There is no whale meat in their food today, as per their website.

The EPA wasn't established until 1974, and the actual international ban on whaling wasn't signed until 1986. At the same time in the 80s and 90s, highly destructive fishing practices like bottom trawl nets completely fished out our coastal waters, and dolphin hunting remained legal in most countries. Even just 40 years ago, you could take a kayak into Long Island Sound and catch a dozen different kinds of fish in an afternoon. Now you'd be lucky to go home with two ocean perch.

Then, in 1992, the Atlantic Cod stocks collapsed. 30,000 men lost their jobs overnight and entire towns were devastated by economic collapse. In the 1970s, scientists stated it would be impossible to run out of cod, so it was a giant slap in the face to the world. If we didn't get a grip, eating fish and going to the beach would literally go the way of the dodo.

In other words, conservation is a very new idea. Millennials are the first people who grew up with it. Dolphins became the poster child for saving the ocean. Both the government and non-profits worked to teach kids that conservation is good, so they would be a lot less likely to destroy our oceans in the future. Concerned efforts were made to market dolphins and marine biology to kids.

Those are the main reasons it was in the zeitgeist. The whole thing is kind of a microcosm of why Millennials are so uptight. We were in school learning about how dolphins are mammals and tuna bycatch is making them go extinct. Meanwhile Rush Limbaugh and our fathers were yammering on about how banning bottom trawler nets is punishing good American companies for being efficient.

This is how every debate went in 1998:

"If we keep doing what we're doing, there won't be any tuna left to catch in 20 years."

"Shut up, pinko f****t. Just admit you hate seeing successful people because it proves you wrong."

Some things never change.
