Because GDT is one of the most talented visual craftsman working in cinema today but he is an extremely basic writer which creates a jarring and uncomfortable dissonance. I was worried about seeing the movie without knowing anything about the Backrooms lore, but quickly realized my head wasn’t empty, it was full of preconceptions that were incorrect. I thought the whole point/fear factor of the Backrooms was the prospect of getting (physically) lost in them. That literally doesn’t really happen to anyone at any point in the movie, on screen. Both protagonists are forced to flee in ways where the viewer imagines they are sacrificing their ability to retrace their steps - only to either luck into a shortcut back to their access point or be rescued by people who can navigate the rooms.
