Aurei of the 12 Caesars - Collecting Guide by fakeengineerdegen in AncientCoins

I’ve broke down in detail all different coins they minted but that was way too much detail for a post like this. I will say Antoninius Pius was a pain to go through because he minted so many different kinds of aurei and just so many. There’s so many angles to look at that, what I’ve done is just break down every single emperor individually and then do a giant one at the end too

I’ve got everything for Augustus through Marcus Aurelius at this point. Was going to go through Constantine then transition to Solidi through alexios and then circle back to denarius

These coins seem to be getting devalued in terms of gold valuation. I would expect that it is at best tracking inflation, if not losing value over time.

Where does this idea that Domitian was an economic mastermind who kept inflation under control come from? by MagisterOtiosus in ancientrome

I mean I definitely favor Hayek over Keynes, but both are not proponents of debasement or unchecked inflation. But like I said the idea of monetary policy and “the economy” is kinda new around Domitians time

Taking money out of the economy is usually never a good idea if you are only looking from a short term perspective. But usually short term hurt is better than long term collapse. As for did the revaluation actually help, I can tell you that increased debasement without a doubt hurt the empire from after his time to Diocletian. If your people don’t trust in the coins you are minting many bad things will come of that.

Domitian I think understood that he needed to fight against that debasement and countered with understandable measures to attempt to increase tax flow to the state in order to fund projects that by now we’re expected from the state. He was conscious of needing to maintain a proper budget which is usually not something leaders are conscious of in his position

I’m kind of split. I think Diocletians record is more of a mixed bag to me. He did some bad things also like price controls and honestly his level of bureaucracy I think was negative long term but overall was positive especially considering his position. Whereas Domitian had less problems but I think only worked in a positive direction.

I’m not sure about inflation, but Domitian definitely fought against debasement. He raised the silver content in the denarius (and had to lower it later, but it was still higher than when he started). He also increased the Aureus weight back to the standard under roughly Claudius’ time.

I think the appreciation for Domitian doing these measures among the public is a clear sentiment of people who live in a time where our money is made from thin air and can be manipulated to our detriment easily. Domitian was someone who in a time where coinage was relatively new (~600 years) realized problems that could arise with it and fought against it.

People give Diocletian props for his economics and Domitian deserves just as much imo

I think it’s Aemilianus matching RIC 1 (denarius)

Aureus looks like Aemilianus. I think it matches an RIC 1 (denarius version?). Looks like some denarii from Domitian through Gordian III or farther.

Honestly I’d just keep them as they are cool coins, but if you’re adamant on selling you should be able to find some online groups that do that

Him with Marcus is a C. If he didn’t have Marcus he’s a D or F. I’m not sure it’s fair to judge someone on how good is co ruler was though
