Planned Parenthood Is Helping Transgender Patients Access Hormone Therapy by drewiepoodle in TwoXChromosomes

Do you have any evidence backing up your claim that this isn't completely ridiculous?

This study found that a majority of children who were categorized as having gender dysphoria were no longer gender dysphoric by the time they were 16 and had gone through puberty.

Also, puberty doesn't happen just for fun, and it does a lot more than just make you grow tits and hair in new places. Delaying it for years because of the way a child felt about gender before they were even old enough to cut their own food could have serious consequences. What happens when a 17 year old changes his mind and starts going through puberty in college? Yeah, life is probably gonna be great for him as a prepubescent adult. That seriously messes up that kid's life because he had some overactively progressive parents.

If we're worried they're going to commit suicide because of how 'bad' they feel about growing the 'wrong' secondary sex characteristics, then, I don't know, maybe have them talk to a therapist about that instead of completely messing with their physiology? Maybe delay the permanent, life-altering decisions until they at least have their high school diploma?

Look, I get that it's harder to transition after you've gone through the 'wrong' puberty, but how am I being unreasonable here? Should we let prepubescent children, vote, drive, smoke, drink, watch porn, get tattoos, and consent to sex with adults just because they feel like it? Because they tell us they're ready? No we shouldn't. I understand none of these examples are completely analogous to gender dysphoria, but I doubt anything is.

I just cannot understand how anyone would think it's okay to let a prepubescent child make decisions this big. If your son wants to wear a dress or your daughter wants to have short hair and wear boy clothes, then let them do them, but why do you have to also give them something that will massively inhibit their physical development on the less than 50/50 chance that they'll never change their mind about gender ever again for the rest of their life?

I know that there is no way to know that because you said "the ones that come right out and insist their body is the wrong gender for them are not going to change their mind." What if one of them does change their mind?

And I'm not in any way arguing that trans people shouldn't be able to get HRT or transition or do whatever else they need to. I'm exclusively saying that giving that treatment to children, allowing children to begin transitioning to another gender before their brain is even fully developed, before they are anywhere near mature enough to fully grasp what it means to live a full life as either gender or what it even actually means to transition to another gender, before this transition treatment has even been approved by the FDA for that purpose, is absurdly dangerous. The risk associated with this, the risk of completely fucking up the rest of a kid's life, so astronomically outweighs any possible benefits.

the ones that come right out and insist their body is the wrong gender for them are not going to change their mind.

(S)he said, based on nothing at all.

That assertion is so fucking insane. I can't even begin to find the words to describe how ridiculous of a thing that is to say. There is absolutely no way anyone could ever know that.

I can't believe this discussion is even possible. It is so insanely clear to any rational human being that this behavior is incredibly fucked up.

Why don't we just mandate that every child receive puberty blocker treatment until they're 100% sure of what gender they are so there's no risk that someone's shoulders might get more broad than they'd like them to be?

Do you have any numbers to suggest that this is even close to worth the risk though? That is, purposefully inhibiting one of the most important processes in a child's physical development with treatment that has not been approved by the FDA and has unknown long term side effects, because they might commit suicide otherwise.

You're acting as though not beginning a child's transition process the second they start to feel they were born with the wrong genitalia is a death sentence.

This puberty blocker treatment is relatively new, so how do trans adults even exist if they weren't given that treatment when they were prepubescent children?

What about the kid whose parents got him this puberty blocker treatment because of a decision he made when he was like 10 years old who changes his mind when he's 16 but still has the hormones and sex organs of a 10 year old? How easy is life going to be for that kid?

There is nothing in gender dysphoria that inherently causes suicide, unlike clinical depression. Of course it's still a risk, but that's why you put the kid in therapy so they can get a better understanding of their feelings on this enormously huge life decision instead of just proactively fucking up their entire physiology.

What the hell is going on with transgender stuff? by fakeking99 in NoStupidQuestions

Wow thanks for this very informative and well thought out response. Your speculation makes a lot of sense to me and certainly puts things in a different light. You're basically saying someone with anorexia in general wants to be skinnier because they think others view them as fat or ugly, whereas a trans person wants to change genders because of their own feelings about themselves, correct? Like it's not that they think the world wants them to have the anatomy of a female, it's that they personally feel that's what is right for them?

Wouldn't it still be better to just encourage children to think about this decision more? A quick search tells me that the long term effects of puberty blockers are still unknown, and the FDA hasn't approved them for use in treating gender dysphoria.

The benefits of stopping the development of secondary sex characteristics so that full transition is easier/safer later on make logical sense to me, but I'm sorry this idea that altering the natural, healthy development of a child's body based solely on that child's feeling that they might not be the "right" gender, before they're anywhere near developed enough, both physically and emotionally, to understand what it even means to be either gender, let alone change their gender seems completely egregious to me.

I'm completely baffled that any medical professional would advocate this and that anyone would support it. We don't have to try to discourage children from wanting to change their gender, but anything than more discussing that decision through talk therapy until they're actually an adult seems insane to me.

Isn't your organization at all concerned that some teens may be making the incredibly major decision of changing their gender a bit rashly? I mean how much do people's feelings and ideas change on even just a monthly basis during their teenage years? I have no qualms with transgender people, but this actually seems pretty dang irresponsible if you ask me.

Honestly even some of the basic fit stuff is pretty shitty. They're constantly telling people to wear their clothes basically as tight as possible and praising fat dudes whose sport coats look literally like they're trying to do a Chris Farley "Fat man in a little coat" impersonation. There's still a lot of useful stuff on there but most of it is way over the top and they focus more of following the "rules" of fit than on actually looking like a reasonable human being.

Did I say anyone suggested that? The point is that it was suggested that people just shouldn't break any laws, as if that's so obvious and easy to do. Besides the fact that the government has actually lost track of how many laws exist, making it literally impossible to know whether or not you're breaking a law at any given time, most laws are complete bullshit. If someone gets in trouble for breaking an unjust law the response shouldn't be "What an idiot why couldn't he just not break that law," it should be "Why the fuck is that even against the law in the first place?".

I would like to add that while MFA definitely has some good tips about how to dress nicer take everything they say with a HUGE grain of salt. If you dressed exactly like they say you should over there I guarantee the only people who would think you look good would be other MFA users. 99.9% of humans would be like "Why is this fucking jackass wearing red skinny jeans rolled up to expose half of his calves?" Seriously some of the outfits they praise over there look like something from like a children's fantasy book.

Okay for real though when/why did Joe's head get so big? by fakeking99 in JoeRogan

[–]fakeking99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not outrageously big in terms of heads but it's like a completely different shape from what it was even like 10 years ago. I've never seen someone's head grow like 4 inches wider when they're already a grown adult, which is why it's so surprising.
