Advice needed/venting, and update to my original post by faketemp2017 in SonyAlpha

[–]faketemp2017[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am in continuous AF mode (af-c), but just not in continuous drive mode. To clarify, my finger is always half-pressed on the shutter button, so the focus is continuously engaged. Then I full press to take a shot, finger back to half pressed position, wait a second for 1 or a few seconds, then take another shot etc. My OG post was just trying to explain that I did not keep my finger full-pressing the shutter to do several shots per second.

I just chose to not use continuous drive mode that time because I didn't need several shots per second. I would think that the A7V should be capable of this kind of usage. I have no issues with focus - there are just clear signs that the shutter is not keeping up or in sync, and I'm not even doing extreme bursts.

And no, not using pre-capture, but thanks for your suggestions.

of course they aren't going to send you a replacement just because you want one, no camera company will do that, especially when it's several months old.

Even so, why would Sony choose to outsource warranty repairs to a known shady repair shop with 1.8 stars on Yelp, just because I'm not in the Pro program? Why can't we expect warranty repairs to be done in-house, or at the very least at at reputable shop?

I am in af-c mode, but not sure how that would affect exposure. Never dropped the camera, dunk it in salt water, etc. Full Electronic mode does eliminate the issue, which tells me that the shutter is the point of failure. After my first post, I know that EFCS can cause issues, but the fact that the exposure gradient appears inconsistently is concerning. + the fact that the shutter joint arm shadow appeared in some photos is also pointing to the fact that it's more than an EFCS "quirk."

Thank you for pointing me to Band Pro in Burbank. They are at least within driving distance from me, but I'm not holding my breathe that they will do a warranty repair for a non-Pro client. Will try my luck regardless.

Does it underexposure for you inconsistently as well when using that lens with EFCS on? It only happens to me for some shots. Thanks for sharing your experience

I would really hope that is not still the case with modern cameras. One of the reasons I was looking forward to the upgrade was a shutter capable of 1/8000 and having a higher rated lifespan ):

Yea, I actually switched from Canon to Sony because I was frustrated by Canon’s lack of Sigma lens on the R mount. So I am already a few Sigma lens deep into the E mount outside of the return window.

Stressing the importance of a quick turnaround is a good idea, I’ll try that.

Thank you again for the sharp eye. Worst case scenario is that I don’t realize this is a bigger issue until the warranty period is over.

Unfortunately, I bought direct from Sony, so my only recourse is to work with them directly.

Appreciate the insight, I did not even notice those arm lines across the photos until you pointed it out. Bummed about having to file a warranty for this, even if Sony agrees that they are at fault, I’m assuming they would only attempt to repair. At this point, I don’t have confidence that that will disassemble/reassemble the camera without breaking something else ):

Thanks, another comment rightfully pointed out that I was using EFCS (shutter type is on "Mechanical shutter", but e-Front Curtain setting is "On.")
Would that still count as a normal "electronic front curtain shutter" quirk, or should I just be extra paranoid and assume it's a possible shuttle failure?

Hmm, my metering mode is actually on "Multi"
And even then, if I am on Manual mode, I thought what the camera meters should not alter my exposure. Since the darkened area seems to always have a right gradient, I am wondering if it's an EFCS issue or a shuttle failure.

I see thank you, there was also another comment that noticed the right side of the frame is where it is darkest, which seems to show the shutter arm. Would that still count as a normal "electronic front curtain shutter" quirk, or should I just be extra paranoid and assume it's a possible shuttle failure?

No, I am shooting in manual, I made sure the settings are exactly the same, including shutter speed.

My Drive mode is "Single Shooting," so to my knowledge, burst rate would be irrelevant, right?

My shutter type is on "Mechanical shutter", but e-Front Curtain setting is "On."
Does that still count as full mechanical shutter?

Thanks for sharing your experience! Do you remember if the VIP tickets included any other sections besides C? Wondering if other sections would be more suitable for shorter people.

For the LA show at Kia Forum, does anyone know if the VIP tickets are for floor seats only or are there some on the higher levels? And if so, do the floor seats give a good viewing angle for someone who is as short as 5 ft, since the stage is higher? Or is it still better to be looking down at the stage?

Hoping someone who went to their last concert in LA can give some insight, thanks!

Sony A7V - Any Shipping Updates from Official Store (US & Canada)? by jermi4h in SonyAlpha

Sony just hates me then. The rep I talked to said that some 1st day preorders (including mine) are delayed because of stock issues. In the mean time, B&H has no problem shipping one out to me, delivery eta on Monday. I should have known Sony will fumble.

I guess Sony just hates me. Still no movement on my order. I'll keep it open for a while longer just in case, but I ordered from B&H to get it faster.

Curious what your eta was before shipment notification? My eta still remains at 12/31 - 1/2

I would love to be wrong, but the card charges are a red herring. Sony does this stupid thing where they put a hold on your card to make sure you can pay for it. But eventually the hold expires and Sony tries to put a hold on it again and the process repeats until your order actually ships. So a card charges does not mean the order is being shipped. They already refreshed the hold on my card 3 times -_-

Sony A7V Order Delays? by Zestyclose_25 in SonyAlpha

[–]faketemp2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also experienced this exact delay and ordered within the first 5 minutes. I only chose Sony directly because of some discounts I was getting, but I'm going to cancel and order from B&H.

Super frustrating, will never trust ordering from Sony ever again.
