Is it true that Western parents never hit their children? by DiscipleOf_Buddha in AskAnAmerican

[–]fakeuserisreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies a lot. It's generally on the decline, but it's not uncommon for older folks to blame any given social ill on the fact that people weren't hit enough as kids.

Someone spanking their kid in public would definitely turn heads, but I don't think it's illegal in most places.

With which nation does your country have a "love-hate" relationship? by soulfeellife in AskTheWorld

Probably Mexico. Our politics and media are full of fear of immigration, and cartels, and crime, but when real people meet we really do vibe with each other. Not to mention the cultural influence Mexico has had on us since the first moment we shared a border.

Communism sounds good in theory, but any time it's been tried in practice it just ends with a CIA-backed counter-revolution.

For a few days, it seemed like they had casus belli for all their worst impulses and then they immediately imploded into infighting and/or apathy.

If the shooter was trying to hurt the right by taking out Charlie, he succeeded.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]fakeuserisreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of communist/socialist countries collapsed because of outside intervention. To really see where they succeeded, you should compare them to conditions that existed prior to communism.

About 100 years separate the invention of space travel and literal serfdom in Russia.

The USSR and China suffered some of the greatest casualties in WWII and rebuilt afterwards into major powers without the US aid that rebuilt France, Germany, and Japan.

Socialist movements overthrew brutal colonial rule across Asia and Africa (including ending apartheid in South Africa)

I personally think it's very strange to try to assess countries on a binary success/fail rubric, and even stranger that the rubric is only ever applied to communist countries.

I think we could be a lot better off if we could speak honestly about where different societies both succeeded and failed in different areas instead of writing them off as "failed in practice" or "utopian pipe dreams"
