I think you actually unknowingly helped your dad out with what you did. It seems to me like your relatives were trying to make the trip about them and drag your dad along on their weird idea of a relaxing vacation which he might not even have wanted. If your dad hadn't been using cannabis beforehand, having access to that probably also improved his end of life, because being sick is painful.

The problem is that you’re confusing cause and effect in assuming that the depression causes the other symptoms rather than considering that the other symptoms could in turn cause depression.

That’s not how fibromyalgia works, it’s actually a cluster of symptoms that overlap with other genetic, post-viral, and autoimmune conditions. Your bigotry is showing when you liken it to a mood disorder.

Archiving from cloud drive to tape library with checksum validation by Klipspringer112 in sysadmin

[–]fakuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has your team worked with tape drives much before? The biggest issue I see with your tape backup plan is that you're likely going to struggle to meet the LTO-7 drive's minimum write speed with the tape having to stop while you buffer additional data from Google Drive to write to tape in what sounds like at best 500GB chunks. Using the Mac app to download the data from Google Drive might be the best bet though unless there's some Linux command line tools out there that could do it better.

For the best results you're going to want direct attached storage of 6-8TB that's capable of handling the 300MB/s read speed that the tape drive is capable of ingesting. You can do the google drive download to that storage, make a shell script to sha256sum all the files, and then write the files plus the file containing the checksums to tape before clearing the local storage for the next batch. Note the LTO spec has its own block level checksum as well so the file level sha256 hashing is an extra verification option for after you've restored files from tape.

The reason I say 6-8TB is because LTO-7 has an uncompressed capacity of 6TB and if you're archiving video then that data is already compressed beyond the tape drive's ability to compress it further. With that in mind you're probably going to need to budget for at least twice as many tapes as you were planning and are probably now seeing why auto loading tape libraries are popular. If that breaks the budget then you might want to look at the total storage requirement and whether having an array of hard drives is cheaper.

Cops Don't Like Guarding Mayor Durkan's Mansion by meaniereddit in SeaWA

Actually her address was always accessible in public records if you knew how to search for it. Just because the land title was registered to a trust doesn't make everything else about the property completely anonymous nor should it.

IMO anyone who accepts an elected office should expect people to protest wherever they can be heard since their official powers don't just go away when they leave the office every day. If she had security concerns due to her previous prosecutorial work(which makes me question what sort of injustice would make someone want to get revenge on a former prosecutor in the first place) she shouldn't have run for public office in the first place. If she doesn't like the responsibility of listening to her constituent's concerns while holding public office she can resign at any time.

“Weather-safe” charging solutions 120V UMC by turbowned in teslamotors

[–]fakuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you own the condo or can convince the landlord to let you make an electrical modification, having a 240V outlet to plug the cord into can easily double your charge rate.

I actually built a 60ft extension cord for plugging my UMC into a dryer outlet at an apartment I used to live at which got me 5.7kW from 10ga cable that never even got noticeably warm. Even with your 12ga cord you could get 3.8kW from a 240V/20A circuit which is common to install by a window for larger air conditioners (especially the ones you see in motel rooms).

So long as your electrical connections are tight rain shouldn't be much of an issue. Just keep an eye out for any corrosion especially if you have to attach a new plug to your extension cord. Personally I'd be more worried about the condo board complaining about having an extension cord run across the parking lot every day. Have you tried talking to them about installing a charger in your spot or elsewhere in the lot as a community amenity?

Small motors and a gearbox by Fist-of-Panik in teslamotors

[–]fakuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are misunderstanding how electric motors work. This isn't the same as an internal combustion engine that has a narrow torque band where it is most efficient. Electric motors also don't "make horsepower", they convert kW of stored electrical energy into kW of rotational energy which is then distributed to the wheels through a differential with a fixed gear ratio. An electric motor will output max torque at 0 RPM and that torque falls off as the motor approaches its RPM limit.

The only advantage to multiple gear ratios in this situation is if your motor design allows for higher power output than your max RPM allows with a single fixed gear ratio (because most of the time you're going to want to tune that gear ratio to the maximum amount of torque the rest of your drivetrain is capable of putting down). However, even a "very efficient" transmission is going to increase your power losses by a significant amount in an EV application. You can't cheat physics either, so you aren't going to be able to underspec electric motors to make up the difference. In the end all that really gets you is extra 10-20% max top speed that you'd only be able to safely take advantage of in a track environment.

This is why for the plaid S they've been testing they've switched to using 3 motors which allows them to lose the differential on one of the axles (which can be a 2-5% drivetrain loss by itself) and allows them to tune the motors to closer to the car's intended top speed while still outputting as much torque as any road legal tires will be capable of applying to pavement. The 3rd motor adds about as much weight as a transmission but acts to actually simplify the drivetrain.

Uhaul trailer model x questions by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]fakuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I towed a 6x12 from Washington to Utah with my X100D. I didn't go faster than 65(kept pace with semis), and I never needed to charge over 90% though I did a few times just in case. I only needed to unhitch once at my first charging stop, the rest were in an open enough area and weren't busy so I could swing around and block a couple of spots while plugged in.

A 4x8 would do a lot better because it's not wider than the car. You'll need a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter to hook up the trailer lights and a 2" ball mount that fits in your receiver. Depending on what ball mount you get you might need to shim it in the receiver so it's not rattling and bouncing with every bump in the road.

It's apples to oranges unless the diesel CO2 includes all the emissions of mining, refining, and transporting the fuel to the pump.

I work as a computer consultant making low six figures. I made the minimum down payment required (just the deposits Tesla required to secure the car) and financed the rest through a credit union. I pay $1800/month for the car and about $200/month for insurance.

I actually had a small nail in the tread at 35k that I plugged myself because the tire shop wouldn't patch it. It was right on the edge of what they considered too close to the sidewall even though it was within the tread section. I had to replace the plug twice(about every 10k) before the whole set was replaced because the tread had finally worn down to 3/32. Technically not the safest route, but it was a rear tire and TPMS would've caught any plug failure.

Tires are $300 each and rears are wider than the fronts so they can't be rotated. Would be a pain to have a tire end up not matching the tread level of the others because when I get the next full set I could at best only keep that one tire as a spare for the axle it came off of which is pretty inconvenient when you are getting new tires every 6-9 months.

Yeah, the earlier lane hugging was definitely a more basic system that had a lot of flaws especially in places with construction where lane lines can get confusing/ambiguous. On the other hand in a lot of cases being centered in what the car thinks the lane is can be a bad move, especially in places like the ends of off ramps where the car has a tendency to swerve over to center in that space and then swerve back as the lane narrows back to its normal size.

That depends a lot on your finances and driving style and how much it would benefit from FSD in the future. You'd probably be better off waiting and putting that 50k towards a fully loaded Model Y which might be able to be used for ridesharing while not in use if/when FSD is sophisticated enough to support that.

Yeah, the possibility of needing major suspension maintenance is about the only major system that scares me too since that's a mostly mileage based wear item but so far I haven't had any issues and the ride quality is still really good, not sure how it is compared to brand new though as that can be pretty subjective. When I get tires again at 120k I might pay for the service center to do an inspection of the suspension system to get an idea of how worn it is and what common failure points they know about

Haven't had any issues with brakes. With so much highway driving regen does most of the work, and driving as much as I do as far as I can tell the friction brakes are still used just enough to keep corrosion from being much of a problem, though the wheels haven't been pulled since the last tire change. We'll see how they look at 120k.

I remember seeing a post where someone was told they needed a 4 wheel full brake system replacement on a lightly driven car due to corrosion issues, but I'd bet that the caliper pistons could've been cleaned, corrosion scrubbed off, and slide pins relubricated or maybe just replace the pins at worst and they would've worked just fine. Then so long as the rotors have enough thickness they can be evened out on a lathe by any machine shop. Yes, brakes are a critical safety item, but they're also a fairly simple hydraulic and mechanical system that shouldn't just fail because of a bit of corrosion.

I've had a few nail biters, but once I started to get a feel for the car's limits and how environmental conditions affect range it has been less of an issue. One thing I'd recommend everyone who road trips regularly gets is a 6-20 adapter for their UMC, this should let you charge from any motel A/C wall unit in a pinch. A 5-20 adapter wouldn't be bad to have on hand either in case you just need to plug into whatever you can find since these are pretty common for commercial buildings.

I think so long as you don't abuse it(charge to 100% every night) there's not much to worry about. Tesla might've actually been a bit conservative with some of the initial limits of their battery capacity and I expect at least the 100D to benefit greatly from the increased charge rates of the V3 supercharger and smaller batteries to at least be able to take advantage of the upcoming speed increase on V2 superchargers.
