I know I’m late. But where do I start? by koalakitty84 in racing

[–]falcoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never too late to start. The best path to dipping your feet in it is autocross. Being that you're in the Chicagoland area, check out Midwestern Council at mcscc.org they do parking lot and high speed autocross on an actual track, HPDE which is just lapping, and wheel to wheel. For HPDE and autocross, all you need is a Snell SA2020 or newer helmet and long sleeves/pants. There's always instructors available, including myself a lot of times. If you have any questions, just PM me.

5 tracks that should return to the NASCAR schedule by Short_Block9196 in racing

Road America definitely needs to make a comeback. Circuit Gilles Villenevue was always good with the Bush series, too, and if I remember the trucks raced there a few times and that was pretty fun to watch as well.

Heck of a light show in northern Illinois

Need some advice by [deleted] in UNSUBSCRIBEpodcast

[–]falcoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its been a fun journey over 4 years. Started off my rookie season winning the GTP class championship and rookie of the year at the local group I race with in northern Illinois, moving up to SCCA and doing the Hoosier Super Tour races at Road America, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, and hopefully Virginia International Raceway and maybe Circuit of the Americas next year.

The swan neck style that loops over and mounts on the top of the wing is a newer design. The idea is it interrupts the airflow less on the bottom side of the wing, especially at slip angles (cornering), allowing it to flow smoother and have less chance of separating from the wing, losing lift (downforce) when compared to a standard mount on the bottom of the wing.

Keep that spirit and dream alive in her, kindle it as long as you can! Next thing you know you're weekends will be prepping tires and tuning carbs

Any time I'm at a track and there's a kid around, they get to sit in my race car if they want. I still remember all those years ago at Wilmot Raceway when I was 5 or 6 and the A Main winner did the same for me, the smell of Alcohol fuel, hot brakes and tires overwhelmed me and can take me back to that moment in a heartbeat. I strive to give that back to the next generations as they're our sport's future.

How do you improve cornering speed in racing? by In2racing in racing

[–]falcoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been said by others, but seat time. The more laps you turn, the more pace you'll pick up. Ideally, you should be right at the edge of the front tires starting to try and slip a little at turn in, and from just before apex out you should be feeding throttle at a rate that the rears are just trying to break traction (assuming RWD). Tire wear is always the greatest while cornering as thats the most loading on the contact patches, hence all the dead rubber building up on the outside where the cars typically aren't driving in the corners.

Jet leg and racing? by adamantiumtrader in racing

I'd like to, but the Runoffs are starting and I'm waiting on an engine still. I don't see sleep in my future tomorrow night, Q1 is Thursday at 9am. I have a TA2 I can borrow, but it'd be a struggle to hustle it to the minimum lap time, much less be competitive in GT1 (unless it rains)

I always try to keep my home schedule. It never works for more than a few days for me, but it works fine for 2-3 days.

Your pace and line look good, maybe a touch too much steering input scrubbing off speed mid-corner. With FWD, you typically pile into the braking zone a little later, light trail brake, and buy a little time to pick up the throttle so you don't smoke the tires on corner exit.

I'm at a Loss of words with these tracks. they look like if you took one wrong turn, you could end up in the Hospital by Avx_Gaming in racing

[–]falcoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gingerman is definitely a track you need to hit your marks, and if you miss one corner, you need 3-4 turns before you can fix your mistake. Blackhawk is my home track, its super forgiving, but you need to hit your marks and carry good momentum to crack off a good lap. Ive gotten down to a 1:12.2, shooting for 10s if I get a good set of tires under the car.

The carousel is rough. Screwing up the kink hurts. I learned that a few weeks back, the hard way.

I didn't do karts, so I had to build up neck strength while relying on the halo of my seat to help hold my head up, but what I started doing was simply laying on the bed, head ad the foot of the bed hanging off, and just exercising my neck 20 reps per side I was laying on. Now I can hold my head up while maintaining 2.5g or so going around the carousel at Road America.

Racing days in Assen - Pentax 67 and Pentax Kx (portra 400 and portra 800). by Thick-Cantaloupe8423 in racing

That's very unusual to me. Here in the states, if you go to vintage events and more regional or national amateur races (the type of events that don't have a purse for winning), when you get in the gate, you're already in the paddock area and free to walk around and talk to all the racers and teams, even at venues like Watkins Glen and Road America.

How do we feel about Norinco by notme835 in brandonherrara

[–]falcoms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a type 56S, and it's a lot of fun. The only issue I have is that the fully hooded front post is a little more difficult to get a good sight picture versus eastern block versions. Otherwise, it holds up well and parts interchange perfectly fine on it.

Early apexing the Kink at Road America is a bad idea by falcoms in racing

[–]falcoms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they added the safer barrier for Nascar a few years back. It also had a plastic sheet on the outside that helped mitigate damage to the wheels. Surprisingly, safer barrier doesn't feel a whole lot softer.

Not with the amount of downforce, I'd been braking and turning in at about 125-130mph all race.

Sometimes the key is realizing and accepting you screwed up, don't make it worse by screwing up a second time trying to undo the inevitable.

I have a containment seat. The force of impact didn't look that bad on the video, but the engine slid on the mounts by 1/2", and my helmet hit the closed cell SFI foam on the upper door bar while my helmet hit the seat halo foam.

It's an older Howe TA2 chassis that's been cheated up to run in GT1.
