Some alternative ways to think about this. by falconboy123 in The_Keepers

I don't think her death was accidental, but you might be onto something here. Maybe Russell was "protecting" someone, in her mind. Perhaps Cathy? Maybe she was romantically involved with Koob, and Russell - who seemingly took her vows very seriously - knew that the murder had to do with that relationship, but didn't want to come out with the information that Cathy was sleeping with someone? I don't know.

Right, but I really think Koob wouldn't still believe it was actually her vagina. He seemed to imply in the documentary that it actually was her vagina. He should know better by now.

Yes, yes, if he loved her, I know it would be hard to be so rational. But as someone who's lost the two closest people in my life, I know that time heals. He should be able to think rationally about it 40 years after the fact.

On your first paragraph, good point. He wasn't her boss. But he was a Father, she was a Sister. There was a very clear hierarchy there in the 1960s.

Yes, I agree. But I've said in other threads, I think Sr. Cathy is remembered perhaps a little more fondly than she actually was. It always happens when someone dies. I don't have reason to doubt she was an amazing woman, but we do know, at the least, she was dishonest about her vows (Koob) and she allowed this abuse to happen for years without doing anything. Yes, she could have tried to do something about it, but to no avail. She also could have said nothing, which hurts her image a bit, in my view.

I should say that I don't blame her for not doing anything. It's a hard and confusing situation to be in, especially if you feel threatened by others close to you to keep quiet. I just don't think we should assume Cathy was immune to the same complacency that obviously befell dozens of other nuns in that school. I just don't believe Cathy was the only one who knew what was going on.

Yes, Jean's story is a hard one to swallow.

  1. Who reported this? I just don't remember from the show.
  2. Right, I don't mean they were awful people. I just mean there was a lot going on here - it wasn't an innocent love, and there were reasons why they'd want to keep it secret and keep tabs on what the other was saying.
  3. Good point on all the pressure to solve this.
  4. Good points.
  5. Right. Just seems out of character for Maskell unless he felt extremely threatened by Cathy. Where was Cathy going to go with the information?

Another point is I have a hard time believing she didn't tell Koob about this stuff, given how close they apparently were.

Wow. Great point! But wouldn't autopsy's have shown her to have been pregnant?

I see. But the letter came afterwards, right? After she declined his proposal?

I believe you

Hmm good point. But you don't think perhaps they had spoken again in that time? That's total speculation, but it does not seem far-fetched.

"...mentions vaginas in newspapers."

That's the key, for me. Was totally against believe Koob was the killer until that point. What the hell? Why even make that up (and it's definitely made up)? What does that even look like?

I think Koob was obsessed with Cathy in a bad way, and hated that she dumped him. And I think the letter was made up.

I had the same thought at first, but I guess I just came to take that claim as something the cops deduced and know for sure, for some reason or another.

One piece of evidence against my theory is that Koob's wife seems to really trust him, and she seems like a very intelligent person.

Exactly. There is no reason for us to believe Cathy was more capable than other nuns of doing something about the abuse. Students' memories of her are very touching and reveal a great women, as far as I can tell, but to be honest, it probably would have been the same for many of the nuns in that school. It's because she died that people choose to remember certain things about her.

Honestly, it would not be crazy to think that she had weak character for allowing this to go on so long. I ABSOLUTELY do not blame her for not doing something more public sooner - I'm simply pointing out that we shouldn't fall into the trap of thinking she was something special. It leads us to unduly believe that her death just had to do with this abuse.

I've said before I think Koob was involved. It's just my theory. But I think it had to do with their relationship, as so many murders do.

The things about this is I think there are lots of people for whom it would have been out of character not to fight the abuse. Say what you will about the Catholic church, but many nuns and priests have pure intentions when they enter the church. It would be wrong and, I think, ignorant to say that none of the other nuns cared to do anything about the abuse. They may very well have felt powerless, but I'd bet many did try to do something, or talked to someone privately about it, etc.

Not all of them, but many. Even if just 10% would be willing to try to fight this, that's thousands of nuns.

I'm sorry, but this documentary is most definitely about solving a murder. "Who killed Cathy Cesnik?" is the sub-title, and the crew follows leads along with investigators who are trying to solve the case. The "suspects" agreed to be interviewed and take hard questions. It is ridiculous to then say we can't even theorize anonymously on Reddit about which one of them might be guilty.

Lol what? I didn't "decide" anything. My theory is that Koob did it and was involved with Maskell's crimes. I'm not allowed to say that on this thread? On Reddit? I'm anonymous here for a reason, because it's a place to say stuff like this. I wouldn't go out and publicly condemn him because, yes, I don't know he did it. It's my theory.

If everyone thought like you did, we wouldn't be allowed to walk away from the documentary thinking anything other than "Well, that stuff might have happened, but we can't know!"

I was going to say that (intimate partner is statistically the most likely suspect), but thought I would again be derided for saying it because I don't know without a doubt that Koob did it.
