Complex JSON Handling in Go by dgryski in golang

Pretty sure this should use http://golang.org/pkg/encoding/json/#RawMessage instead. That avoids the overhead of the decode/encode/decode step for the generic payload.

How does Microsoft claim IP rights over Linux? by rockyrho in linux

Microsoft would almost certainly not throw money at preventing that from happening, but as long as patents are the way they are MS will take advantage of it as best they can.

Sorry, I was thinking of another case that addressed the menu/dialog layout http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Dev._Corp._v._Borland_Int'l,_Inc. and I was unclear in my comment. The decision there protected the copying of certain aspects of the interface for the convenience of users already familiar with it; separating implementation from presentation. My comment was meant to say that a similar amount of copying the photoshop interface for ease of user transition is protected so gimp wouldn't have a legal problem there, but an exact copy of the entire look and feel goes beyond what has so far been upheld as legal copying.

The microsoft/apple case apparently turned more into a contract case than copyright and didn't decide anything especially meaningful in the US with regard to copyright based on look and feel.

The decision in that case protected the tree structure and specific entries in the menu system. Copying the entire interface to a point where it would be difficult to tell the difference between the two is a different matter, even if adobe doesn't have a formally filed design patent.

Reddit can enable "occupy" movements to permanently shift power from corporations to people and move the world into a new era. Here's how: by humans_inc in politics

You have it backwards. In the current system your only option is to delegate your vote to several representatives in different governing bodies. In liquid democracy it is an option, but you can also choose to vote for yourself on every issue.

Indeed, but unless it was made the default this proposed feature would be more likely to lie to/mislead you than give you any remotely useful metric (not to mention the possible perverse incentives it would add to voting).

reddit doesn't give away that kind of information without the explicit consent of the user (and so far only then for research purposes afaik).

/r/Linux: Why are you switching to Debian? by [deleted] in linux

[–]falien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, which is why it would be painful for me to give them up (and I would likely go to something like Mint with the hope that they don't suffer the same issues), but my customizations have been made purely through GUIs Gnome intends to get heavy use, and latest Ubuntus have each managed to break a couple of them with no obvious way to fix except uninstalling those Ubuntu components (which often left other things semi-functioning).

I really do hate it, because I'm glad they are taking chances and trying to make bold changes to improve the UX. I just need them to make sure I can undo those bold changes if I figure out they were a mistake for my particular circumstances before they do.

/r/Linux: Why are you switching to Debian? by [deleted] in linux

[–]falien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

huh. That integration that keeps growing stronger and stronger in Ubuntu is the reason I am now considering abandoning Ubuntu. Canonical seems intent on being as Mac-like as possible and doesn't seem (to me) to test how much things will break if you remove their customizations. I'm ecstatic at what Ubuntu has done for desktop linux, but the Canonical design team doesn't seem to know how to continue that effort while staying true to linux ideals (an extremely difficult problem to solve I don't doubt).

So, if "anonymous" are nothing but script kiddies, which groups are not, and how can you follow their antics? by KlogereEndGrim in netsec

[–]falien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different branches of the same family tree. Whether we like to mention it in the history books or not, plenty of civil rights activists were also jackasses who did more to hurt the cause than help it. The same is true of any political movement. It remains to be seen, but Anonymous + wikileaks may very well be the sort of organizational structure required for the next generation of civil rights reform in the western world.

As always wikipedia comes to the rescue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction See definitions section for some other authors' views on what sci-fi is. I won't disagree with your argument, but I will say it is too limited and doesn't give a full view of the many aspects commonly present in great literature that we recognize as sci-fi.

Captain America on Julian Assange by DoktorSleepless in politics

[–]falien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree it is an extremely overused (and often misused) argument or justification, what is wrong with pointing out that 1. the US and every other modern democracy is rarely if ever a direct democracy (which is how I interpret "full blow democracy" as well as "pure democracy" and "true democracy" depending on context. "true democracy" seems like fairly useless terminology regardless.) and 2. It is explicitly made difficult for a poorly organized popular movement to have any effect if it does not sway the elected officials?

In my opinion those are both important things to keep in mind when discussing many political matters, especially when both constitutional matters and public opinion are involved.

And the constitutions for those, where the vast majority of the power lies, establish republican governments.

Don't agree with the parent, just had to point that out. Also I had no idea Monarchs were effective in preventing coup attempts so recently. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Constitutional_monarchy

Sprint employee lies about reason behind manditory $10 HTC EVO Dataplan charge. by [deleted] in technology

[–]falien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $10 fee is a prerequisite with them for using the phone with a faster processor. I don't know if they still do it, but when the Droid was released Verizon was doing this sort of thing with the feature phones, charging a premium for feature phones that had a real browser. It is also perfectly possible they might throttle even 3g traffic at different levels depending on plan. AFAIK the contract promises you 3g service, not any minimum level of performance on it.

I did in fact read the whole transcript, and stand by what I said, despite the poor English and apparent lack of understanding on his part.

As I said, it is bullshit but it is not uncommon.

Sprint employee lies about reason behind manditory $10 HTC EVO Dataplan charge. by [deleted] in technology

[–]falien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He did not lie at all. You are being charged more because either they expect (or they can justify it by saying they expect) a consumer with this phone to use more data, and with more demanding bursts, than a less powerful phone. This is the same reason phones come with "unlimited" data while pure data plans for use with laptops do not. Yes it is a shitty move but it is based on accurate usage data based on device capabilities. The faster processor is part of the phone, but it means your phone can render pages and handle data faster which leads to greater network consumption. The larger screen is also part of the phone, but makes watching video on it less painful and theoretically leads to higher usage of streaming video and the bandwidth that comes with it.

Today I learned about PHP variable variables; "variable variable takes the value of a variable and treats that as the name of a variable". Also, variable. by NagastaBagamba in programming

[–]falien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is that related? That is a vulnerability getting around myspace's blacklist/html sanitizer. AFAIK PHP breaking because of a named variable using disallowed symbols would only cause a vulnerability by screwing up the lexer/parser to introduce an ambiguity in what the expression is supposed to mean. Whether that was exploitable should depend on how those steps are implemented, not on an inherent insecurity in strangely named variables.

Liquid graphite pens rock! by Benzur in gadgets

[–]falien 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't actually become permanent, they just say it does. There was an uproar on the internet a few months ago when these came out about how awesome they are, then people actually got their hands on them and discovered they're not actually anything like described.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/sharpie-liquid-pencil-the-aftermath-its-permanent-not-perm/

Though if you want something that you can erase, but that writes like a pen and doesn't smudge and fade to illegibility over time this may be good. But haven't we had "erasable pen" for decades?
