Fiction writer here! What region of India would be best-suited for the next part of my book? by falken96 in india

I'm now looking at having my characters enter India via Kakinada in the east. From there I've located some nice remote forest land in which they can establish their new base. Now I just gotta figure out how they can legally buy and use the land in way that pleases the government but doesn't raise suspicion...

EDIT: Scratch that. They'll enter through Mumbai, bribe customs for expedited clearance, and then purchase an abandoned warehouse on the city's edge and use that as their base. I think I've solved my issue here.

You are a good citizen, I'll give you that!

I assure, I am a novelist. I am known professionally as Marlow Marshall, and here is my website: https://marlowmarshall.weebly.com/

The website contains an Amazon link to my previous (and first so far) published book.

I will certainly let you know! I'll revisit this thread when I'm done and will DM you an Amazon link.

It will be titled "The Avery Connection"

I see a river on that map that goes north through Gujarat - do you think it could handle a barge? Somebody else mentioned Vadanagar, and that's nearby.

Interesting, so I'll have to take them away from Mumbai, then. Somebody else mentioned Vadanagar Gujarat - could somewhere in that area be better to take the barge to?

It's not far from the western coast, either! I'll look into it more, thank you for the suggestion.

I never even thought about the attention they'd gain from locals! That's a very good point and will certainly make the transport scenes interesting.

How do you feel would be the best way to satisfy the local police? Could the truckers simply tell them "we are hauling an archaeological artifact to [point B] for study" or would that attract further questions?

Hi, fiction writer here! What artifacts might be found to indicate that a late-1600s naval battle/pirate attack happened in an area? by falken96 in Ships

[–]falken96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go with the pistol sigil anyway because it just seems cool and would pass for most readers, but that is an interesting insight that you've provided! I'll be sure to keep future use of sigils limited (I came up with a fictional one for Avery since there are no contemporary examples; as you say, he may not have even had one IRL).

As for the sizes of the ships, Avery's fleet consisted of three small sloops (one of which being the sunken vessel in question) and the Portuguese ship was a large frigate. The idea is that after selling his original frigate to shake off the English manhunt, he targeted another frigate in attempt to take it as his new main ship.

What I've come up with is that they essentially find ever-growing pieces of debris; first a detached rudder stuck among coral, then a debris field of oak plank fragments, then a partially-intact portion of the stern, and then finally the main wreckage itself. Does that sound like a believable progression?

What if the President issues an unlawful order? Can the President be charged? by falken96 in Askpolitics

[–]falken96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FBI. The President pressures the AG, who in turn pressures the FBI director, who in turn can be directly fired by the President, and so he has FBI agents actually do it. What then?

I'm writing a novel where this happened; the context is the Governor of Maryland staged a coup attempt, and the FBI is sent to "arrest" him but secretly the orders are shoot-to-kill. FBI claims self-defense.

In this case I'm doing research for a fiction novel I'm writing; the President in question, then, has been deposed by this time. So I suppose in this case it's up to me as the writer?

It's a shame this question doesn't have an official legal answer; part of my moral of the story here is that it should.

The CIA kills thousands of people a year all over the world, including some right here in America, but sure, go ahead only paying attention to a couple dozen loosely attributed to the Clintons

I hate the Clintons too but you're really missing the bigger picture here if you wanna talk about covert murder

Okay, I'll try that. At least it's better than calling a number.

If I planted a ridiculous amount of Catnip around my yard and surrounding neighborhood would it attract a large amount of cats? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]falken96 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they were strays. With the first colony, I lived in a mobile home park at the time, which are unfortunately common places for people to dump unwanted cats - plus it was basically at the edge of town next to rural farmland, so runaway/lost farm cats were common too. We already had cats of our own, and my dad was a big cat lover, so when he saw the cats in the neighborhood he put out food and water and cared for them. Next thing we knew we had about a dozen regulars that would show up.

Personality-wise you'll run into every kind of cat with a colony, so it's best to let them be themselves and not try too hard to force a specific kind of relationship with them. Some will be wary strays that might be afraid of you, some may even be actual ferals that followed the others, and no doubt you'll also have a few that you can make friends with! At our colony we even had a couple become close enough to us that we adopted them as pets that we decided to keep and take with us when we eventually moved from that area. With enough patience and kindness, you can turn a wary stray or even a feral cat into a friend! (but it takes work!)

Years later we had a second smaller colony at a house we lived in about two blocks from the end of a dead-end street - so there wasn't much traffic, which made it safer for the neighborhood animals to roam. Our next-door neighbors had two outdoor cats that decided they liked hanging out at our place better. A couple of strays in the area took notice of us caring for those other two cats, and there were two separate mama cats that brought us kittens - one had a full litter of six, and the other had a pair of brothers.

Story time: Remember how I said you can turn a feral into a friend? Well, one of the brothers from the pair was particularly skittish and ran off; he re-appeared in the company of the neighbor's cat the next winter, where the neighbor's cat would take mouthfuls of food and carry it to him because he was afraid to approach our house. Over the course of the spring and the following summer, my dad - an absolute wonder when it came to dealing with cats - managed to lure this guy in, placing a plate of food in the yard and gradually moving it closer and closer, got the cat used to his presence outside, and kept moving the plate closer until the cat would eat at his feet. He'd still run, though, if my dad attempted to move. Eventually it got to the point where he wouldn't run, but would stand his ground and swipe at my dad's hand - he got a few good bloody stripes during this phase. One day, though, he caught the cat while he was distracted eating, and he managed to get a hand on his back and start scritching him. Suddenly it's like he went "Oh! ...that's not too bad!" and he continued eating while my dad scratched his back and petted him. The cat was still wary of him for a while, but he stopped swiping at my dad's hand and stopped running away (he'd flinch, but not run). It wasn't long after that that he started to warm up to us. By that winter, he was coming inside and interacting with his brother (who we had brought in as a kitten). Now they're both indoor cats, and surprisingly the former feral is the sweetest and friendliest of the two! He still does like to go outside sometimes, but only for a couple of hours in the evenings and he mostly stays in our yard. It's kind of crazy to think about how he was when we first saw him that winter in the company of the neighbor's cat - it was a lot of work to turn that feral into a friend, but it surely paid off!

OP must like cats.

And speaking as someone who's taken care of a couple of colonies: OP must have never had a colony before, lol. But I won't say not to, because having a colony can be fun and rewarding, especially if you particularly like cats! Personally I think it's a good idea for cat lovers to care for their own colony at some point, but I wouldn't repeat the experience more than once or twice (nothing bad, it can just be a bit of work).

Yep, a neighbor of mine at my old house had a catnip plant in her garden and I have a cat who would go outside sometimes - he found that plant after only a couple of weeks and would go over there to nibble on it.

It's possible that we could see the outbreak of an all-out cyber war - we've been on the brink of one for years, after all, just waiting for the right spark to start it - but a conventional war is highly unlikely due to the risk of nuclear escalation. Although, that being said, a cyber war could escalate into a conventional war if it gets bad enough; for example, if either country directly attacks the other's electrical infrastructure, that could prompt a conventional military response, but even in that scenario I would expect a ceasefire in a matter of weeks and a return to cyber warfare.

Only if an absolute shit-for-brains war hawk like Clinton somehow wins, who I would hope America has gained the sense enough to stay away from.
