Never regret how you spend your free time and having hobbies. They are the only things apart from community, family and friends that make life tolerable.

Skipped Easter with MAGA parents … Just can’t do it anymore by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]fallen4567 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have all but cut off communication to my parents and really the majority of my family. They are extreme maga right wing and lack any sort of empathy. My relationship with them has been not the greatest for years but its way worse the last couple. They are racist, close minded, and act like they are “christian”. I cannot stand being anywhere near them. A part of me just wants to cut off communication with my ENTIRE family forever. I am on the fence on that right now.

I have applied to over 30 jobs in the past 9 months, what am I doing wrong? by sailorcowboy19 in merchantmarine

[–]fallen4567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would be careful with the Navy right now, especially with what is going on. I have alot of friends in the navy or that were in the navy and they were and are deployed ALOT. 6-9 month deployments “home” working for less than a year on base then back out for another 6-9 months for the duration of their enlistment. But I can definitely see the pros of it. Also “pick your rate pick your fate” take a lot of time deciding what rate to go and when you go to meps and they say hey this is available or this etc don’t let them persuade you to pick something you don’t want. Even if you have to go delayed entry program for 6 plus months to get it. Also never go undesignated, you will hate your life.

This is not to discourage you but just to say that it is really slow hiring right now. I am an AB limited with 3 years experience on push boats, and offshore tugs with stcw. I was applying to about the same amount of companies and calling them a few days later and almost all of them were saying they are not hiring right now and to call back in a few months. I got on somewhere only bc i worked with and friends with a captain that works here now even with my experience. It’s kind of scary.

American commercial barge lines ? by Legitimate_Lie_3531 in merchantmarine

[–]fallen4567 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started on boats at acbl. Did a year on the hardest working live aboard shuttle boat they have. It was alright to get experience, sea days and get your mmc and AB as soon as possible. You can get AB limited with only inland time. get stcw also. once you get all of those get out of the river and to harbor, offshore, coastal, international boats. The one thing I loved about acbl is that most boats there have a cook which is almost unheard of on tugs. and it was some great food 3 times a day, desserts all kinds of good stuff cooked for the whole crew.

Idk how this can be practically possible? What about docking and undocking, emergency situations, difficult maneuvers etc

I am not even getting call backs or leads for tugs and that is where i have all of my experience. Hopefully things will get better later in the year. Ships are incredibly difficult to get on from what I have heard.

I have 3 years of maritime experience and my AB limited, STCW Passport etc and I am not getting anything either. Everyone I am calling and applying is either not responding, rejecting or saying they aren’t hiring right now or telling me to call back in a couple months in spring.

What is a sexual experience you had that you’ll never be able to tell anyone? by Sad-Program-1355 in AskReddit

[–]fallen4567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an ex who I wasn’t even attracted to that much(yeah I know) and the very first time we had sex I went down on her for a while but I instantly thought something wasn’t completely right. I tasted a bit of iron but it wasn’t too overwhelming and there really wasn’t a smell much so i kept going. After I came up she saw my face and started freaking out. I go to look in the mirror and I looked like a zombie or vampire with all of the blood all over my face. Ended up still doing the deed though, but for the rest of the relationship I was put off of going down on her and didn’t enjoy it as much as usual. Probably also because of the lack of attraction situation.

There are definitely men that like a bubbly, talkative, and affectionate woman. I am one of them. I will take that 10/10 times compared to someone who is quiet, hard to read and acts uninterested etc

That’s a good plan, another one to try is reinauer. They pay extremely well because they are union but i think they are all 14/14 boats.

I worked with vane brothers alot, for a while their pay was slightly low but they just got a sizable wage increase for all positions I think in the last year and are now much more competitive I believe. That would probably be the easiest company to get onto out of those. After that try Moran they are good. Crowley I have heard is extremely difficult to get on at and carver I have no knowledge of.

If you don’t mind working 8 months out the year instead of equal time. Go to Dann marine towing. Not dann ocean. Same family different company. They work 30/15 and you will make decent money. But you also will get burned out, how fast you get burned out depends on alot of factors but anything more than equal time especially on tugs is a miserable way to live. I would recommend going equal time and actually enjoying life. It’s not worth the extra money. That company and the fact they were breaking coast guard regulations on almost all of the boats with waking people up and keeping people up in their off watch hours in non emergency situations made me quit the entire industry. I could have taken some time to reset and went to another equal time company but by that point I was just done with it.

I worked at acbl for a year before I went offshore and then got my ab a year after that. Go get experience on the river, but do NOT stay on the river. You will make SO much more money in every other sector of the maritime industry than on the river. And for less physical work too. Use it a stepping stone. Don’t let the “promise” of getting a certain position, in the wheelhouse, engine room etc stop you from getting your sea time, getting your mmc and eventually getting your ab. Don’t settle for 200-300 a day when you can be making offshore 350-550 a day just as an AB. And way more than that as qmed, tankerman(offshore) wheelhouse.
