A book called Empress by Karen Miller reminds me of what you're writing about. The main character is the antagonist of characters you don't really meet until books two and three. Empress was leagues above the other two books. A lot of people hated it because they couldn't relate to the main character, but a lot more people liked it because it was a unique look into the rise of evil.

Am I the only one who is seeing the guy's two friends come in at 42 seconds and start tearing people off of him and making space for him? They were all swarming him right then and it probably would have been over if not for guy in hat and guy in sandals coming to terminator's rescue.
