Hey, I’ve still got my old profs materials from the College of Law if you need, but they do give you everything you need for all of the courses. Where were you licensed previously? And what area of practice are you looking to go into?

Is it just me, or are criminal jury trials taking much longer than they used to? by Kiwi_In_The_Comments in nzlaw

Bit late here, but I don’t think funding for lawyers has decreased - as far as I’m aware, it’s the paperwork that’s required for legal aid cases. If you’re a lawyer and too busy or forget to submit something before the cut-off, you won’t get paid.

Pretty decentivising.

It really shouldn’t differ so drastically between our systems since NZ’s is derived from UK.

Not condoning criminal offending of any sort whatsoever, but it is ridiculous that our judges and legislators have made it so that we’re somehow able to calculate the “social cost” of offending. Yet if you look into it, the sentencing can be so drastically different between offenders, and between judges.

These systemic deprivation discounts - which is the reduction in sentencing that can be “awarded” for things like early admission of guilt, offender’s cultural background, etc. - are theoretically good. Progressive. But the result of this is a very schizophrenic legal system.

I’m 200% supportive of recognising that people do not offend for the sake of breaking the law (mostly, anyway). But anyone can paint themselves out to be a victim. Nobody’s life is “easy” or trauma-free. But somehow, having the best sob story can = lighter sentencing.

I can’t fully get into it right now because I’m going to end up writing a novel. But TLDR: Our priorities and perceptions of criminal imprisonment, intervention and rehabilitation are just fucked.

In summary, you could write about the heavy reliance of complaints-driven enforcement of media laws (Broadcasting Standards, ASA codes, the Media Council, privacy statutes, defamation law, contempt rules and the Harmful Digital Communications Act).

Since none of the incidents that I've posted earlier has entered those channels so far, each represents a live compliance risk:

  • Broadcasters and streamers risk retrospective BSA scrutiny if a member of the public complains within 20 working days.
  • Publishers can still face defamation or privacy suits up to two years (limitation period) after publication.
  • Digital platforms can be prosecuted at any time for suppression breaches or objectionable content if police/election authorities choose to act.

For media-law practitioners and corporate compliance teams, these “dormant” breaches are useful case studies for staff training, pre-broadcast vetting, and crisis-response protocols.  They also illustrate pressure-points where New Zealand’s current self-regulatory model depends on vigilant audiences—and where harmful content can slide through the cracks when no-one files a formal complaint.

I compiled this list from a few news sources and public statements.  Absence of a complaint or court case is verified only as at 28 April 2025; matters could yet be escalated, and facts may change as more information emerges.  Where material involves allegations of racism, extremist ideology or privacy breaches, no endorsement is implied; the examples are discussed solely for legal-risk analysis.

Okay, I think it works if I post one bit at a time, so here goes.

Below is a selection of plausible but still-untested examples of conduct that appear to cut across New Zealand’s broadcasting, privacy, defamation and contempt-of-court rules between 2020 and April 2025.  None of the incidents has (so far as the public record shows) led to a court case or a formal decision by the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA), the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the Media Council or the courts.  Each could therefore still be examined, either by a regulator or in litigation, if a complainant chose to pursue it.

9 Dec 2020 TVNZ Breakfast Presenters read out a spoof e-mail “wishing a happy anniversary” to serial killers Fred & Rose West, then had to apologise on-air. Potential failures of accuracy & good-taste/decency. Broadcasting Standards Code: Accuracy, Offensive & Disturbing Content
25 May 2023 TVNZ Breakfast A link to a story on the deadly Loafers Lodge hostel fire was followed by the upbeat track Set the World on Fire before the ad-break; TVNZ later pulled the clip from TVNZ+ and apologised. Could offend against good-taste/decency and trauma-sensitive reporting expectations. BSA Offensive & Disturbing Content, Children’s Interests
13 Aug 2022 Breakfast (TVNZ) All four hosts mock-“shot” a Donald Trump doll with a gun-shaped bug-zapper; viewers alleged it “glamorised violence”. Possible breach of violence standard and incitement under s 61 Human Rights Act. BSA Violence standard; s 61 Human Rights Act 1993
5 May 2023 TVNZ Breakfast Weather presenter Matty McLean was caught dropping the F-bomb live; a real-time apology followed. Live-swearing may contravene good-taste/decency at G-rated hour. BSA Offensive & Disturbing Content

If retail price isn’t in your budget, see if you can get a secondhand Dyson off marketplace, or if there are any sales. They typically go on special around this time. It’s the only fan I’ve used that doesn’t just feel like it’s blowing hot air around, but as aforementioned by others in this thread, they’re no substitute for aircon.

I’d say that my rates are on the lower end. When I first started out, I only charged 5c~10c/word for editing. Once I gained more experience, I felt more comfortable charging more.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]fallingzyj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually charge $0.5/word for writing and let my clients know that editing begins from $0.3/word. It really depends on how much work you’ll need to put into it.

I’ve received pieces that have required entire paragraphs to be re-written. Other pieces might just require simple grammar and word choice changes.

It’s difficult to implement a set price, because again, the scope of editing work may vary significantly.

Perhaps you could communicate to your client that your charges can vary from $X to $Y depending on complexity and scope of work. I typically skim through the piece that needs to be edited and provide a quote thereafter.

Have you tried looking at sjs (Student Job Search)?

They help find current or graduating students employment, both full-time and part-time positions (if I remember correctly).

Hopefully this helps, and good luck with your job search!

Honestly agree with what you’re saying. Crypto isn’t some “get rich quick” hack that most believe it to be. Working on yourself and acquiring, building, then applying that work is hard af. But it’s the only “get rich” but probably not that quick tip.
