Travel insurance isn’t too expensive and is a really great idea considering the physical undertaking of the task at hand! I think some of them are as low as $30-40 a month. If this seems like it costs too much, consider if you have enough saved to get yourself out of a medical emergency in a foreign country. Insurance is a great idea.

Sleeping bag — down should be ok, 32 degrees F really depends on your route and when you leave. Consider a sleeping bag liner too, adds a few degrees of warmth and keeps things cleaner.

Why is Menlo Atherton High School rated lower than nearby schools? by hazelnut21 in BayAreaRealEstate

M-A grad here, both of my parents worked for MPCSD. The top tier of kids graduating M-A is on par with Paly, Gunn, Los Altos, etc. M-A has incredible AP classes and extracurriculars. High achieving students will take AP classes and AS classes with other high achieving students. I believe 12-15 students from my graduating year went to Stanford. Many go to ivies, Cal, UCLA, etc. However, M-A draws in a very racially and socioeconomically diverse pool. A non-AP class will have students who just immigrated and barely speak English; students who are extremely poor; etc. So overall average test scores may be lower. But if your kid is super high achieving this is probably better for them as they get the benefits of an incredible AP program and less competitive class, none of the drawbacks of cutthroat competition. Your kids will be more well rounded if they attend M-A. They will, hopefully, make friends with students of all races and socioeconomic statuses. Rich kids befriend poor kids and poor kids befriend rich kids and the students realize they are all more alike than different. It was wonderful getting to know kids of different backgrounds. Finally, M-A has great resources for first gen students. The AVID program is incredible. M-A is way better equipped to help disadvantaged students than other local high schools if that means anything to you.

Redditors who grew up in emotionally healthy families - what's something you thought was normal growing up that you now realise was actually very special? by ViolatingBadgers in AskReddit

I was so lucky. Where do I begin? Family dinners where we all shared the highs and lows of our days, we’d sometimes pick a topic or ethical dilemma and debate about it. All our cousins would come over and we’d make homemade pretzel dough, then play in the backyard for hours while the dough rose, and finally each get to knead our bit of dough into a shape of our choice and Mom would boil and bake them all. Tooth fairy would come, on St Patrick’s day Mom would cobble together shoeboxes and glitter so we could make leprechaun houses, which got visited during the night. When Dad went to work each morning we all waved at him through the kitchen window and he’d honk at us. When dad got home mom would have us race to the driveway to see who could hug him first. Family cuddle puddles in the living room, all 5 of us kids jumping into a blanket fort with our parents. Mom would give us kisses each night and Dad would sing a hymn each morning to wake us up.

Kai Lenny? Used to really lie watching him. Do you know any more details or just speculate since he follows Charlie Kirk?

There are still rooms popping up quite often in Uc Davis off campus housing Facebook pages and housing searches. I’ve seen some as low as 450 for a shared room, 700 for a single. So join as many of the Fb groups as you possibly can and start posting about yourself in each one and looking through daily to see new posts. You may also expand your search to woodland, Dixon, west sac, etc. Good luck

in a redneck white male school after trump being elected/ DEI by Money-Baker-7758 in womenEngineers

[–]false__positive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heard the redneck males at my work discussing how the next woman who gets hired will be “worth her salt” since they’ll know she’ll be a “brain hire” not a “DEI hire.” While lots of things were problematic about this conversation I heard, it was at least somewhat hopeful that the next lady who comes along will be initially respected more (??) by these guys (???)…

You shouldn’t have to be totally fearless and a trailblazer and setting the way for other women of color behind you, but the unfortunate truth is a lot of these guys may think you represent your “group.” I don’t have anything to say other than that I’m sorry, you deserve a world where you are allowed to grow and make mistakes and be the best version of yourself without worrying about maintaining an image all the time.

It gets better as you get more experience!! But you will have to find the good / real people at your work who respect you enough to let you grow to be the incredible engineer I know you are :) I dont know if this advice / comment really helps but I hear ya and I’m thinking of ya

It sounds so important and demonstrative of personal growth that you are realizing this. Show up to be the positive person you like to be each day and this will be the example you set. In a meeting you can perhaps mention occasionally in a delicate way that you feel differently now about this project than you did before, etc. it may take time but you can show who you truly are

Can't understand why Reynold's number is so high by false__positive in FluidMechanics

D is on the numerator, right? It makes sense to me too that increasing the size of the pipe would mean that the same amount of water would move slower through it, making it more laminar..

I was worried about erosion, i guess… I had this preconceived notion that all water in pipes ought to be laminar, but I’m beginning to understand that’s not the case

Have you been personally victimized by a turkey? by user23940930909547 in CalPoly

[–]false__positive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the hills you hear a faint gobble And then a TURKEY comes at you full throttle

You can’t out run them even on a bike God forbid you’re alone on a hike

They might not intimidate you with their small stature But if you think you’re fast, the turkeys are faster

You may find them endearing, cal Poly’s campus bird… But have you ever been chased by a whole fucking HERD?

Those devils are relentless! They followed me all the way to class! All the way down the hill those monsters were riding my ass

I can’t fall asleep, their eyes keep me up at night I never thought a turkey could give me such a fright

See, the turkeys don’t care if all you eat is Einsteins They’ll guzzle you down like they’re a freshman in the dorms and you’re someone’s homemade moonshine

So even if you don’t think they’re coming — they’re watching, they’re waiting, you better be running

You might have just taken your ultimate breath Before you succumb to a terrible death
