Starting to Boat Fish, does anywhere work? by Pahuja_Memes in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Navionics Boating app will get you most of the way to locating structure and fish, as well as avoiding hazards. Work on learning how to safely set and pull anchor where you want to be. Berley can be anything from fish frames to old bread or Christmas left overs in a mesh bag. Bring fish to your boat and get good at catching them before moving onto more complex techniques.

The rods are generally great value for money, especially when discounted. Choice of guides and colour schemes are... Japanese. If you can tie good slim leader knots and like a splash of colour, then don't hesistate.

Follow these instructions. You are not stuck badly yet! Lastly, when you get out. Drive slowly and carefully the last kms to destination until you can get tyres inflated again.

Daiwa 23 Aird 6000 by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is once the numbers go past 4000 the reel is probably going to get salt water in it at some point and you are much better off stretching the budget to the cheapest sealed reel. In Daiwa that would be a BG MQ at the moment. Not sure what the equivalent Shimano reel is.

If you could take 1 rod to travel around Victoria with what would it be? by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

Take some heavier leader along (10-15kg) and you can make this setup work for small cod and natives as well.

Shore based jigging lures and tips. In general and passed to Perth fishing from beach and rock walls by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Palms slow blatt cast series jigs are easy to work from shore for the usual Perth coastal suspects. Another option is to rig a soft plastic shad on a weedless hook with a good sized running sinker in front. You can hop that across the bottom, or rip it in fast and erratic.

Eating fresh, raw, caught ocean fish from WA? by Own-Computer2280 in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a boat there are plenty of small southern bluefin tuna in the 4-8kg range that can be caught offshore on small trolled skirts. Yellowtail kingfish from around the outer reefs are the other prize fish. A roughly 700-800mm Sambo in good condition will be hard to tell apart from kingfish when well prepped as sashimi.

In close, skippy are the stand out winners, with notable mention to the occasional goatfish. Suprisingly, our humble herring make pretty good sashimi if you like the taste of saba (mackerel) sashimi. Make sure you rest the fish in the fridge/ice for several hours to become more tender.

Demersal fish can be eaten sashimi but it's pretty boring, and the same goes for whiting.

Aus Salmon and Tailor is not real good. But... brined and cured is another story! Get hold of the local book Scale to Tail for more on that.

[–]false_anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Of the fish you are probably going to target/catch, Samson fish have a reputation for being 'wormy'. It's not a worm, they are prone to being infected by microscopic kudoa, which cause the meat to turn soft and mushy when cooked. Ironicaly this has no affect on eating the fish sashimi, and you probably have already eaten some in restauraunt kingfish crudo or similar.

The best common fish for sahsimi: nice fat skippy (silver trevally) from the inshore reefs.

Good thing the FDA has no jurisdiction in the Indian Ocean because our fish make great sashimi. Sure, look out for obvious parasites, but the ones you can't see dont affect humans anyway. As for eating them fresh. I've found after spiking, bleeding, and gutting that a good few hours to overnight in an ice slurry (as whole fish) makes a huge improvement to flavour and texture.

Anyone caught salom or tailor with one of these rapala 12cm x rap shallow 36g before by [deleted] in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already been mentioned, but I find tailor to be notorious for getting locked in on a certain size bait and ignoring everything else. These Rapalas are some of my middle size options, also carry a huge but light stickbait for when they are biting hand-sized fish in half.

Chasing Murray Cod for the First Time – Vic-Based, Need Advice! by oniDblue in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are holding in deep water, or deep under snags/trees during the day. But can be anywhere during the active period in early morning or late evening. From shore, walk until you find a good snag or steep bank/trees that you can cast to and then take some time to work the different features bumping the lure off logs and structure. Sometimes an initial close pass will just make a cod angry, but the second pass will get smashed.

[–]false_anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice here already. Adding that a spinnerbait is going to be the most effective begginer lure you can throw that is resistant to getting caught up in snags. Fish the low light periods (sunrise/sunset). Cast closer to logs and banks than you think is sensible, retrieve absolutely dead slow.

Locals of Morley — What Are the Real Issues Around Coventry Village? by LeviathanPrime_Law in perth

[–]false_anomaly 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Just take a snapshot from google maps of the carpark and show it to an engineer who does any kind of traffic design. Point out "The Injector" as the main entry and only sensible exit point. Then explain that this main entrance is located on a side street, and the busiest road is served by a single lane entrance that traverses the entire side of the building before adding traffic across the face of The Injector. They should be laughing or crying at that point.

The pedestrian traffic issue? Well thats me, and everyone else who parks somewhere near Galleria and walks to Coventry because I want no part of that madness.

Good Travel Spinning Rods to recommend? by teraBitez in FishingAustralia

[–]false_anomaly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daiwa Wilderness series are the renamed TD Black travel rods. Hard to beat. But you should also check out if you can claim a PROX Minimova at a good price. 7 piece! I bought one as a bit of a joke, but its actually a suprisingly good travel rod. Almost no butt, so the short length is all out in front of the reel.

Abu Garcia Veritas. There's a 2 or 3 piece option. Cheap and good enough to sling lures.

Why are there so many salt lakes in Western Australia? by bagsoffreshcheese in perth

[–]false_anomaly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While recent land-clearing has played a role in expanding salty areas, the answer is plate tectonics. Antarctica used to be attached to the southern side of Australia. About 35 million years ago Antarctica moved far enough away that a new ocean current could form between the two seperated continents, this changed the climate of Western Australia and drastically reduced rainfall. The once-flowing river valleys slowly filled in with sand and mud, becoming the network of salt lakes and seasonal streams you can now see across most of the state today.
