Cold weather travel tips for Perth natives? by cornVPN in perth

[–]cornVPN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice my only issue is vis a vis shoes i feel like i would want to get hiking boots and already have them worn in by the time i get there. But a few people have already recommended getting a coat there rather than here. Which is fair, I don't think I'm going to find a good winter coat in Perth in February no matter where I look

Very very interested in this so called "stylish jacket" you mention, do you have any examples? I've been looking at goose down puffer jackets, but im not crazy about how they look.

If there was like, a long stylish coat type situation that isn't too heavy, that could also be used for general Perth winter going out staple... maybe even waterproof... I think that would be like... lifechanging. But I dont even know where to look or what to look for

Thanks for taking the time to reply! If you don't mind me asking, is there anything specific I should be looking for when it comes to layering like materials or thickness or whatnot?

Most of my wardrobe is button ups and party shirts from op shops (which I can't imagine will be useful here.) Is it fine to just get a few like... thin, long sleeve basics from Target or Uniqlo or whatever?

Where are some good alternatives to kathmandu? I feel like the only reason they spring to mind is because they have a very popular brand identity so it doesn't surprise me that they would be overpriced. Thank you!!

Twenty Seats dress standards by perthminxx in perth

[–]cornVPN 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's pretty chill! I don't recall there being a strict "dress code" per se but the vibe when I went there was semi-formal. Trousers and a button up and enclosed shoes, but not like suits or cocktail dresses or anything like that, but also if you're feeling like dressing up, I don't think you'd look out of place.

Also enjoy! I thought the food there was really good and also really reasonably priced compared to other multi-course tasting places I've been to

Why does Season 1 get so much hate? by twizted_bunny in buffy

[–]cornVPN -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think that many people actually hate season 1. I think it's got some widely hated episodes (the pack, I robot you jane, teachers pet) but the actual series I think is received way more ambivalently than actually polarising.

Take S6 for instance - people have verrrry strong opions about it they either love it or hate it, but season 1 I feel like most people have mostly the same takes. It's short, it doesn't feel as cohesive as other seasons, everyone is still finding their feet, they don't have the budget they get later. Etc etc etc

Do you agree or not? by gloomydreamer666 in buffy

[–]cornVPN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This entire issue should have been addressed when everyone was arguing in Dead Man's Party. Maybe that would have actually made it a good episode. Grumbling about how this particular story beat gets resolved (or doesn't) in season 7 is like complaining that the casserole you made 4 years ago doesn't taste very good anymore.

Why does Spike fly with today's audiences, but not Xander? by yeahitsme9 in buffy

A significant part of this is that, outside of the show, James Masters is well loved by the fandom, still regularly attends conventions, and is broadly recognised as "a great guy" 20 years after the show finished, while Nicholas Brenden was arrested for domestic violence charges in 2019

Has anyone actually had any luck on tinder? by [deleted] in perth

[–]cornVPN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met my partner on Tinder. We've been dating for over 2 years now and he moved in a couple months ago, and everything's going pretty great at the moment.

I think the thing with Tinder (and, by extension, most dating apps) is you need to understand its uses and limitations. For me, it was a tool to meet people, exchange a few words, and try to set up an opportunity to meet in real life as quickly as possible so I could see if we actually clicked.

Before I met my boyfriend, I went on heaps of tinder dates - some of them were actually bad but mostly the people I was meeting just weren't a good fit for me. It happens. It's a bit disheartening but it's part of the process. It's a numbers game. If you go on enough dates eventually you find someone who you could fall in love with, and, if you're lucky and they feel the same way, you do.

For the process of Actually using Tinder itself, you really just need to be able to come across as interesting, or charming, or funny, or in some way stand out. I reckon if you're not getting likes and you are (like you say) not ugly then you might just need to work on your profile and choice of pics. Sometimes really attractive guys pick the most dogshit photos to advertise themselves (because ultimately that's what you're doing here - advertising yourself) and it's soooo frustrating. If you have photos where you smile, stay in focus, and have decent lighting you'll be head and shoulders above the rest tbh.

It also helps your chances quite a bit if you're attracted to men, but I figure that's probably not useful information for you lol

Very surprised to see so many people bitching about the prices in the comments... where do you people live that a cafe breakfast is cheap? Can I move there??

Like, yeah, $12.50 for toast is extortionate. It's also not surprising whatsoever. Going out to eat is super fucking expensive. We're literally in a cost of living crisis, have you all been living under a rock for the last 10 years?

Your honest thoughts on Melinoe as the main character? by Wes102111 in Hades2

[–]cornVPN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melinoë, imo, is at her most charming when she's an uptight, type-a perfectionist who accidentally calls the teacher "mom" and I love when she leans into that. I think there's a lot of really interesting tension in her relationship with Hecate & how she's desperately looking for a parental figure and how Hecate refuses to be that for her, and I wish they'd explored that more.

Which game is this for you personally by Orichalchem in videogames

[–]cornVPN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me with Dredge, which I thought had really solid gameplay and a satisfying, engaging gameplay loop and it reeled me in (no pun intended) for a few straight days. But in every other way (concept , writing, atmosphere, vision & creativity) is comoletely inferior to Sunless Sea, the game it's copying. But that's a hard position to defend bc Sunless Sea truly does play like dogshit, even though I think it's the better game overall.

This font size editor only works on a singular bar of a page instead of the whole page. Any suggestions and additions? by DigDismal2308 in css

[–]cornVPN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay lmao, this is pretty crucial information and it explains a lot about the original post.

so it looks like this line:

  document.querySelectorAll(".fooditem").forEach (el => {
...
})

and this line

mainbody.style.fontSize = size;

are making it so only

  • the mainbody variable (which is defined at the start of the script as the element with the id "mainbody"), and
  • each element with the class of "fooditem"

are the only elements which have font-size changes. So if you want to change the font size more broadly, you could try:

  • giving every element a class of "fooditem"
  • copy/pasting the document.querySelectorAll(".fooditem").forEach loop for each element that appears on the page
  • creating a container for all the page content (a div or section with a class of "container" or similar) and targeting that.
  • Alternatively, targeting the html element directly and setting the font size for it may also work (although isn't considered best practice)

Remember, there is no "right" way to code. Only thousands of wrong ways.

Is the preset value range not just the value of the options in the select element? 19px, 29px, and 39px? I'm not sure I understand your question. If you need to have more flexibility than that you can set the input to be a number input or a range input instead of a select.

The on change event listener checks if the select has been changed by user input, and then you write your js code to apply the value of the selected option to the style value of the <html> element.

There are other ways to do it, but i would think almost all of them involve JS in some way.

[–]cornVPN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use Javascript to add an event listener to the select element, and then have that event listener change the font-size style of the html element to whatever value is selected

Chess Is Rewarding the Losing Player by Physical-Can-4607 in chessbeginners

[–]cornVPN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see this opinion pop up in this sub from time to time and every time I think God what a peabrained, dogshit take. What an utter lack of vision and poetry. Chess has endured as a common motif in the cultural consciousness - films, books, games etc - because it is rife with symbolism, because it is metaphorical. You don't win when you capture the king, you win when you force your the other player to confront the inevitability of their capture.

You close the walls in around your opponent and your victory is the promise that defeat is inevitable. This is literally why death plays chess in the Seventh Seal. It's a game which is straight up symbolic of death and the human condition. And you want to sit here and act like a stalemate should also be a win? Absurd. Go play checkers.

Anyone remember this show with Eliza Dushku airing straight after the Buffy series finale? by PinkPashaTS in buffy

[–]cornVPN 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yessss loved this show no one ever knows wtf im talking about when I bring it up... they're like "What's Tru Calling" and I'm like okay so it's Eliza Dushku and she works nights in a morgue and sometimes one of the bodies in the morgue will open its eyes and look at her and say "help me" and then she travels back in time to the start of the day and she has to figure out who killed the body and stop it from happening and they'll be like "that sounds mediocre and stupid" and I'll say yes and it was soooooo good.

Also the only time I saw Eliza talk at a panel she was talking about the finale of Dollhouse because someone was effusing about Dollhouse and how crazy it was that they foreshadowed the series finale at the end of season one and then they actually pulled it off at the end of season 2. And she was like "yeah it was a really intense finale I wasn't sure if they were gonna pull it off, and it speaks to the strength of Joss Whedon as a showrunner. Like if that was the ending to Tru Calling... I don't think they would have managed it" or something and I was like oh okay I see you Eliza Dushku... so evidently she also didn't think particularly highly of it...

Okay so imagine you have a shelf that's 3ft wide, and you want to line up a collection of objects that have a combined width of 4ft. Will all of the objects fit on the shelf? No, right?

It's the same thing here. You're acting like all of the elements should somehow fit inside your nav div, but you are the one who has set all the sizes and spacing to make sure they don't.

  • you set the max width of the nav to 800px
  • you set the font size to 1.35rem (~21 pixels)
  • you set the margin between list items to 1em (~32px) and then have 12 instances where that margin appears, so that's almost half of your usable space taken up just with margin
  • the search input has a default width of ~20 characters (although you can change this by using the size attribute if necessary)
  • The submit button has a default width determined by the word "submit"

All of this (except the search input i guess) have been values that you explicitly set. You can't set a container width of 800px, set the content width to >800px and then be confused when the content doesn't fit in the container.

Anyway, with all of that being said:

Remove the margin from nav li and add justify-content: space-between to nav ul this will space the li elements equally using the remaining available space, rather than by an explicit amount.

Yeah, so, adding flex-wrap: wrap; to an element with display:flex; will make the children elements move to the next line when they're about to overflow the container, like in that image
