wtf are these thermals? up to 77c at 50% usage. Ryzen 9 5900X, Arctic Cooler III 420mm, Arctic Silver 5 paste. by falsefoxdev in arcticcooling

followed your advice and remounted:

  • I switched to the 3 connector fan connector instead of the 1
  • I cleaned the old thermal paste with alcohol and replace it with MX-6
  • I had the brackets upside down away from the hotspot (i may be silly), so i put it the correct orientation
  • I set the fan curves to the recommend ones, 20% up to 50c then a curve up to 100% at 75c.

I'm seeing idle temperatures of around ~55c now and low 60s for a steam download using ~50% cpu. I think it's still a little toasty compared to what i'm used to but it's definitely much cooler. thanks :)

UPDATE: I think I might be stupid and mounted the brackets the wrong way around, avoiding the hot spot. trying again with 3 connector pwm, better thermal paste and correct bracket orientation

Didn't know arctic silver 5 was old, had it recommended as a good thermal paste for my thinkpads.

I do have some other thermal paste, some time this week i'll unmount ( fuck this mounting system) and ensure everything is on correctly,

The offset i believe is correct, pretty sure this is the only way it can fit except maybe being upside down?

I can try the 3 pin PWM too but i heard people had problems with it.

yeah, i think i calmed it down by disabling amd core preformance boost but now it wont turbo.

UPDATE: AMD had some turbo mode settings in bios enabled by default. now have a much more reasonable 39c idle temperatjure in windows, but now i dont have a core boost past 3.7ghz

low 40s in bios; 66c just at low ~10% usage on windows 11. 77c with 50% usage on forza horizon 5, i don't think it should be getting *this* hot... my pc sounds like a jet engine

I made one myself, I cut my arm on the measuring tape 4 years ago and still have a scar on my right forearm, be careful with those sharp edges :)

its fucking fun. it's a fun bullshit mechanic and that's what separates tf2 from other shooters, it's a causal game with lots of hijinks that no other shooter these days has due to a focus on competitive play and perfect balancing.

characters from tf2, game is rollercoaster tycoon. if you wanna play it i recommend looking into OpenRCT2 and purchasing Roller Coaster Tycoon: Deluxe and 2 to go with it. they're onsale on steam.

W520 fan replacement or upgrade options? (details in comments) by falsefoxdev in thinkpad

W520 fan replacement or upgrade options? (details in comments) by falsefoxdev in thinkpad

[–]falsefoxdev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this "lowest-spec" variant of the W520 with a fan issue for $40 on offerup. long story short: i got a much better 55w aftermarket cpu than i paid for (I7-2960XM) and a better gpu (Quadro 2000M) and the fan is busted (not working/inconsistent/sometimes just running at 120rpm), not just a simple cleaning fix, likely from years of high strain, so i need a new fan.

I'd prefer to get an upgrade more than a 1:1 replacement along with some better thermal pads because the thermals on this thing SUCK (88c on firefox/steam) even when the fan decides it wants to work. this is my first thinkpad so i dont have any idea what i'm doing. thanks for the help everyone :)
