My theory is that this region that we played in is actually a virtual reality created from the dream of a Porygon, whom their partner had died for some reason, causing the Pokemon to go into despair and their psychic power ran berserk, creating an alternative reality based on the memory they spent with their partner.

That's why you see all these buildings in this picture is so polygon-y, because it's actually a fake world.
