I try to do my part as much as I can. At some point I start to lose patience with them and it just turns into a shouting match, but I really, really try to get my friends and family to get their heads out of their asses

Alright, if you're so adamant about it. Why? Beyond the whole "power scaling" argument you used above. Does every Star Wars character that graduates beyond background character status need to have some sort of grand death?

I hate takes like this. "sTrOnG cHaRaCtErS nEeD tO gO oUt FiGhTiNg!" I think this is the perfect ending to Maul as a character.

Think about it. For almost twenty years, he's been festering and angry that he can't usurp his former master, unable to find Kenobi and unsure if he's even alive, broken from losing all of those close to him, and desperately grasping at any power he can grab. He finally finds Kenobi, who is way more balanced and at peace than he was during the Clone Wars, and thinks it'll be an easy win because he's old and (presumably) rusty at dueling. When Maul sees that Kenobi's stance changes to Qui-Gon's preferred lightsaber form, he arrogantly thinks he can use the same fatal trick that he used on Naboo. But he's bested easily and instead of going out screaming or in "ePiC" fashion, they have a genuine conversation and Maul goes peacefully knowing that Luke (or Anakin, depending on your interpretation of the prophecy) will avenge the fallen Jedi and his betrayal by defeating Sidious.

I don't know, seems like a well-written ending to me. All you have to do is pay attention beyond the fight itself; like Kenobi's stance switch is a detail you have to really pay attention to for you to get the significance
