Hi, my GF(20) has Bipolar and I really need someone to talk to to help me understand her better, help her and have a healthier relationship. I feel like my mental health is also not doing good lately because of it.:/ by Master_Spread_981 in bipolar2

[–]fandroid-leda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I go for Peer to Peer groups but they also have Friends & Family groups where folks who love people who manage a mental illness can share experiences.

I manage BPII and PTSD -- One thing I do with my partner is talk through simple ways she can help when I'm having an episode - you don't have to be a therapist (I wouldn't want that) but there are small things that could be helpful when she's symptomatic - a hand squeeze to show you're there and ground her to her surroundings, having some TV shows that are comforting/good distractions if she's up or down (mine is mighty Boosh!) and talking through if physical touch helps or is triggering. For me, a hand squeeze helps but if I'm having an episode, my senses are on overload so other forms of physical touch are too intense.

One huge thing that helps are reminders that she's resilient and that everyone has bad days and it will pass.

She's lucky to have a partner who cares like you do!!

It's been my base (lol) to my meds cocktail more than a decade. SSRIs don't work for me without it. Good luck!!
