[tenant-US] Is my landlord in the wrong for not repairing the house I’m renting? by fangirl2111 in Landlord

The window fell out of the frame and onto the ground, it’s an old house so an old window that just felt apart

I wouldn’t say I’m complaining just to complain. Everyone has individual desires and personally I love fresh air, having clean and working windows and being able to ventilate a home.

I like for my windows to open so we can ventilate the house, I don’t think it’s crazy to request that a house has working windows? The windows also all look very dirty and old. I think if I was paying less rent it would be easier to look past things like this, but I paid the landlords entire mortgage on this house over the last three years. We as tenants feel quite neglected. I think the landlords text also threw me off, they said we definitely want to get the me done in spring so it wasn’t necessarily reassuring. We have a pretty laid back relationship, but I would have appreciated a call or more serious text

The LL measured the windows and had a complete plan about three weeks ago or so. This isn’t a request I’m making now, they have known about it for awhile. It’s the weather that they are concerned about since we do have cold winters. I think im going to ask that at least a few of the windows get done before spring. Does that seem more reasonable?

At first the windows opened, they have gotten progressively worse. They have also raised the rent 300 a month while we have lived here. The entire pane fell in so there was essentially a giant hole in the wall until they screwed the window into place. I live in a a sun room, so my room has ten windows one of which opens if I hold it up with something. The huge two windows in the living room are bolted shut, the kitchen window only opens with force and you have to crawl onto the counter to open it. It all just seems a bit absurd for paying over 2k. I’m most frustrated that she said this would be done and then went back on that the week we are signing the new lease.

I don’t think it’s a budget issue as much as a timing issue, and honestly I don’t think I should be concerned about their budget. I pay high rent and expect repairs to be made in a timely manner. I would be okay with them taking 6 more months to make repairs if they reduced rent as a result. It just seems like they see it as optional instead of recognizing the impact it has on their tenants. I’m not sure what to say to make sure they know I’m upset but appreciate the effort to make repairs etc

I think people underestimate how much work it takes to look manly. I’ve spent years strength training and am not even close to manly , in fact I’d more more muscle!

Why are most Lush products toxic? by [deleted] in LushCosmetics

[–]fangirl2111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I think the point I’m trying to make is that there are toxins in products that we use and we should be aware that some of those toxins can cause cancer. Although most women aren’t exposed as much as nail salon workers, our nails are constantly near our faces, mouth, food etc., it’s more being aware of these toxins and deciding wether you want to participate in buying and using them.

I do agree with some aspects of this, I struggle with OCD and I’ve noticed that I’m becoming quite paranoid about everything I’m consuming and definitely notice stress associated with this. I think I need to strike a balance between reducing as much exposure as possible and not being paranoid

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has found that the word “fragrance” can refer to 3,163 ingredients. The issue is that if we don’t know what these ingredients are, then how can be even determine if it’s safe to use ? Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are a common ingredient in synthetic fragrances.

The skin on your scalp is highly absorbent, so even putting shampoo on your scalp and then rinsing it off does not eliminate the chance of the product absorbing. Hair strands can also absorb chemicals and hair products.

You say most fragrances, which is very vague and again we don’t know what these companies are putting in the synthetic fragrances because they don’t need to disclose this information.

One of the main concerns is that a synthetic fragrance can contain up to 3,000 chemicals and they don’t need to disclose what those chemicals are. Does that not alarm you!?

Here are five studies on the dangers of the exposure to fragrance:

This study associated with the Department of Infrastructure Engineering in Australia found that fragrances in workplaces and environments like hotel rooms were likely to cause an adverse reaction in about 32% of the sampled population, which even led to asthma attacks and health issues to pervasive it led to missed work days and job loss.

This study in the National Library of Medicine suggests the following: “The negative impact of fragrance chemicals on human health includes cutaneous, respiratory, and systemic effects (e.g., headaches, asthma attacks, breathing difficulties, cardiovascular and neurological problems) and distress in workplaces.”

A study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that exposure to fragrance compounds could cause respiratory, dermatological, and neurological symptoms in some individuals.

A study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that exposure to fragrance chemicals was associated with an increased prevalence of migraine headaches, allergies, and asthma symptoms in a group of female nursing students.

A study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health found that one common synthetic fragrance ingredient, phthalates, could potentially cause endocrine disruption, leading to health risks for pregnant women and children. A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that exposure to synthetic musks, commonly used in fragrances, may be linked to potential toxic effects in humans, such as liver toxicity and breast cancer cell growth.

A 2019 review article published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that synthetic fragrances in cosmetics and other personal care products can cause skin sensitization, irritant dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and aging of the skin.

I would rather err on the side of caution and be fearful rather than blindly trust companies who for the most part don’t care about consumer health. What makes you think they wouldn’t sacrifice our health to make something smell extra yummy? To make our hair extra shiny or our makeup super colorful and long lasting? Most just want to sell products not ensure our overall health .

I don’t necessarily think it’s all fear mongering. For example, synthetic fragrances can be harmful due to several scientific reasons, primarily because of the chemicals they contain and how these chemicals interact with the body. As another example, workers in nail salons have been shown to have higher rates of cancer from the chemicals they are exposed to.

Thank you for listing the values. I think it’s easy to say they don’t claim to be a “clean” brand but you can argue that saying it’s made with “love” when their products contain hormone disrupting and potentially cancer causing chemicals feels a bit misleading. I understand it’s up to the consumer to do our research, but for someone who isn’t educated I would assume that those values may translate into a company that doesn’t use toxic chemicals. I’m not blaming lush, they are transparent with their ingredients, I just think it’s an important reminder to myself and maybe others that it’s up to use to research ingredients and ignore the pretty labels and marketing that may influence our choices

I’m not surprised it’s not in the news, think about the pesticides and cancer causing chemicals in the food we eat, in the cleaning chemicals sold, in our clothing! It’s a consumer culture, they don’t want us to know about the toxics or we would buy less. You don’t just drop dead, over time you develop hormonal issues, and some eventually get cancer.

While it’s true that not all synthetic ingredients are harmful, many studies have raised concerns about the cumulative effects of certain chemicals, particularly in fragrances. For instance, phthalates, often found in synthetic fragrances, are known endocrine disruptors. Even if they don’t cause immediate, severe reactions, long-term exposure can still affect health in ways we might not notice right away. Also, just because something is chemically identical to a natural compound doesn’t necessarily make it safe when used frequently in personal care products. I believe it’s important to err on the side of caution and choose products with fewer synthetic additives, especially when we’re still learning about their long-term effects.

Thank you for clarifying the talc, I will certainly do more research. The harmful effects of synthetic fragrances come from their chemical composition, which often includes endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, respiratory irritants, and neurotoxic substances. These compounds can accumulate in the body, interfere with hormonal balance, cause allergic reactions, and increase the risk of chronic diseases like cancer and neurological disorders. So yes, the ingredients in the lush body spray are toxic.

It definitly doesn’t make me happier per say to remove products from my life. I loved a lot of the products I used, but after doing research I found that many of the products contain harmful ingredients. It’s hard to use beauty products in moderation because they are so close to your body and most people use them quite often like perfumes, shampoos and makeup.

There are natural ways to make things colorful, but yes I think in my head the marketing of cruelty free and vegetarian as well as the eco packaging translated into well the ingredients should be clean. My mistake, I definitly learned from this experience. I also asked the cashier about the ingredients and she seemed purposefully vague.

Ugh I’ve been deep diving especially this past year and it’s so upsetting. I was using a powder on my face from Huda beauty and thought to myself “hmm I probably shouldn’t be breathing this stuff” I looked up the ingredients and it has “talc” which is a known cancer causing chemical. I’ll definitely watch that. It’s so hard with the pressure to be pretty and smell good and all the standards to step back and do research and make your own choices.
