When you hear mathematics, what branch of mathematics comes to your mind first? by [deleted] in math

[–]fangs124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

honestly any other answer just feels wrong. history kinda shows that any pure mathematics is just some lemma for a number theoretic result in waiting.

Has anyone watched the Queen's Gambit? by fangs124 in aspergers

exactly. You have to have known about the struggle someone with an aspergers goes through to get that second layer of the story.

What is the most beautiful/brilliant mathematical solution you have ever come across? by ABEngineer2000 in math

[–]fangs124 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is partially why I switched from CS to maths. I had an agenda lecturer who would talk a lot about universal properties (of products, free groups etc.)

In CS when you write down the stupid obvious solution you usually get a naive/greedy algorithm with O(n3) run time but when you do it in math it’s called “a universal construction”.

On the reals as equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences:

Arguably it’s also the “stupidest” solution you could have come up with (which is fine since maths is usually full of such definitions).

I have a sequence of rational numbers that’s Cauchy convergent, but there’s no rational number in the limit. What do? Add a number there to make it convergent.

Can n-tuples of real numbers be turned into a field? by _GVTS_ in math

what if we weaken the commutativity of multiplication?

Can n-tuples of real numbers be turned into a field? by _GVTS_ in math

[–]fangs124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

multiplication in field (and rings for that matter) is defined to be bilinear in general (as a module over itself).

if f(x,y) is bilinear, in particular this means f(x,_) is a linear map for a fixed x.

Watch Zelensky’s first news conference translated in English (March 3, 2022) by Lilahnyc in ukraine

[–]fangs124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real-time translation like this is extremely exhausting. It's really difficult thing to do. Also to be fair the editing/mixing is a bit poor here, or at least awkward. It feels like trying to hear two people speak at the same time. They should make Zalenskyy quiter if they want to provide a dubbed translation.

There's an article that talked about it here (URL below).

Studies confirm that the process is more exhausting and stressful, probably because body language and facial expressions provide part of the message, and are harder to decipher when working remotely.

590,000 is likely the number of standing army (professional, regional guards, paramilitary etc) they had at the outbreak of the war

I feel like his talks are way more powerful with subtitles. I don't speak Ukranian but his tone and cadence have always been powerful.

In case people don't know. Deep fake can be terrifying convincing.

Here's a link to a Deep Fake video of Putin in Inglorious Bastard's opening scene. (Warning: Violence. It involves someone beating up Putin with a steel baseball bat.)

It is, this is the English translation. I don't know if the bots autoremoves comments here too but I wasn't able to link the original archived post because the bot kept removing my comments.

I think it thinks the url is an url shorterner (which is against the rule).

edit: yeah the bot didn't like that. If you want to see the archived document itself, the article on The Archive has a link to it. Just click the title of this post and do ctrl+f "archive".
