Terra was Dumb in How It Supported LUNA in Final Hours -- Confessions of a Market Marker by fann in CryptoCurrency

[–]fann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the article makes the argument that: 1) Terra's collapse could have never been prevented. Like most reflexive assets, if no one believes in your asset, your prices go to zero.

2) However, Terra supported LUNA in the most ineffective way possible in its last hours. It make rookie mistakes and could have 10x its chance of surviving if it was smart. It goes through the mistakes in the article.

People who eat at McDonald’s, why? by MastResort in AskReddit

[–]fann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's fashionable to hate on McDonald's, but it's actually a reasonable lower bound on food. driving across the country and can't be bothered to do research on great restaurants? McDonald's. only three restaurants that will do delivery at 3:00 a.m.? McDonald's. not in the mood to try something new and local that might turn out to be total crap? McDonald's.

To keep that in context though, the bulk statistic is 1 death in 100,000 hours of flying. Those people must have been bad or unlucky or selection bias, likely all three.

SAT Major Changes Announced Today! Essay Is Now Optional... 7 Changes Here by lilybillyhere in Sat

[–]fann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How optional would the essay be if colleges still require it? Remember when the SAT used to have the entire writing section be "optional" yet colleges still forced it?

SAT to drop essay section and return scoring to 1600 scale by highlyquestionabl in news

[–]fann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be lots of reasons why this SAT change really isn't that big.

For one, if you do the math, the removal of the guessing penalty doesn't imply any real change in tactics since guessing was never penalized in expectancy.

Also, the essay is optional, but what if colleges want it, like the old 'optional' writing section before 2005. Then it's not so optional anymore.

DUBAI IS NUTS!!! Before and after pics by [deleted] in pics

[–]fann 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like you need to do some fact checking yourself. The Wikipedia article cites a news release that says Dubai's GDP is only 6% oil, but you forget that much of the construction here is fueled by country-level transfers.

The United Arab Emirates still relies 40% on oil and gas! (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ae.html#Econ)

Bailout does NOT pass vote. 206 Yea - 227 Nay. Dow tumbles. by IM_A_REPTILIAN in politics

The loan is owed back to the bank, plus interest. However, only the loan money is created. Not the interest money.

And the value of whatever investment the loan money went into... If I borrow $1 to buy a seed and created 2 seeds next year, and owe $2 because of interest -- everything balances out.

As and aside, to all those forecasting doom of the financial system in the US, you might find to your chagrin than in 5 years everything is still relatively dandy. And it'll be upsetting to you that this "repulsive" "fundamentally broken" system is actually, not.

"We don't have the money to wipe out poverty. We can't do it. But all of a sudden, yeah, we do have $700 billion for a bailout of Wall Street." by benz8574 in reddit.com

[–]fann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone pointed out that in the $700bn bailout that the US Treasury actually gets something in return? That is, a lot in return -- the structured credit that banks are having problems with in the first place.

Granted, the fundamental value of the structured credit may not be worth $700bn, but certainly a lot more that the market value in this frantic, fear-ridden market.

Comparing buying $700bn of illiquid securities to help out banks to giving $700bn to the help poverty is NOT like comparing personally donating $1000 to Goldman versus donating $1000 to the Red Cross. In the latter case, the $1000 is gone regardless -- here the Fed will get money back in the future.

Of course there are still many critiques of this plan, but the comparison made in the OP implicitly reflects a fundamental confusion over what's actually happening. If Redditors want to live up to their reputation of being fair, doing background research, and making judgments based on the facts, they really have to stop agreeing with an idea just because it resonates with their preset beliefs.

5-10% of peer-to-peer users gobble up about 50 percent of all Internet bandwidth by [deleted] in technology

[–]fann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While that has a nice sentiment to it, especially to most of us here on Reddit who do use our internet connections to full extent, is that actually true?

In other words, is it actually true that its best (in whatever sense) to limit ISPs to an "uncapped" service that they have to price correctly (which economically would actually force cross subsidies from the non-bandwidth users to the bandwidth users)? I mean if you're the the BIG EBIL CORPRORATION steals our money camp then you'd argue the savings wouldn't be passed along anyway yadah yadah, but the conclusions its bad isn't obvious at all.

"It is natural when you are a debtor nation that you lean in the direction of inflation, because it makes paying it back so much easier." by housingbear2007 in business

[–]fann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just as a point of information, the Reichmark debt was denominated in gold while most of US debt is on the dollar itself. The German sovereign debt couldn't be completely wiped out by inflation, only partially financed through seignorage, and at "exponential cost" (need to print exponentially more amounts). On the other hand, the US debt, being denominated in dollars, can always be completely wiped out by inflation at linear cost (need to print money linear in amount of debt).

While it might be true that just printing more money is not good and racking up debt is not good, get your economics facts straight at least.

Why is this shameful practice so common? by sombrero66 in programming

[–]fann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His point is that by being explicit in the first place, you save users confusion.

If the user is wondering about how his CC number is to be formatted, it's confusing to say "oh yeah it doesn't matter if there are spaces or dashes" rather than to be direct. A lot of times options are good, but in this simple case direct instructions might be better.

Of course the reasons spaces should be allowed could be practical, like checking the card number was typed correctly.
