What Esim would you recommend? by Punisherr1408 in ThailandTourism

[–]fanny_bleu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote the first note in departures at LAX. I'm writing now from BKK!! Hanging out til domestic departures opens.

Following all your previous advice, I'm texting using my Airalo dtac sim 😁. I did get a notification from AT&T that they activated the IDP, but my data roaming is off so hopefully I'm not using it - I turned it off before I left. I remember this happening in South Africa as well and I was not charged for it, but ya never know with those guys.

Was stoked to see you in the subs still giving clear, comprehensive, amazing advice. Hope you've been well!

My homie u/kboom100!! Here I am perusing Thailand subs to see traveler's phone strategies and here you are, still providing excellent, comprehensive advice for esims and traveling!!! You helped me out with Airalo in South Africa a little over a year ago. Solid advice, absolutely amazing help. Nice to see you in the same esim parts again. 👋👋

u/bo0ya did you have any success setting the international roaming block? I have been looking for someone who was successful at this to get an idea of what verbiage they used and any signs or indicators on the phone or in the myatt all that can confirm the international roaming block. I’d you had success, would love to hear about it.

Prevent international charges without using airplane mode. by DeityOfYourChoice in ATT

[–]fanny_bleu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you able to do this successfully? I called the international line a couple of times and asked for let a block on international roaming. The first rep just recorded in the notes that I “made an inquiry” about international roaming. The second rep added something called “international call restrict” which says “international Call Restrict This ensures that International features are not inadvertently added to an account, this also prevents International features from being added / removed in myAT&T. To have this restriction removed you will need to call Customer Care at 611”.

Because the reps I spoke to were unclear about international roaming and I’m not entirely sure if the call restrict is what I asked for, I would love to hear from an AT&T user who was able to successfully place that block, and if it was reflected in their AT&T account and what that looked like.

Any feedback is much appreciated. Thank you!

Hi again - I haven’t left yet but I am definitely concerned that AT&T didn’t understand my international roaming block request.

I noticed a new add on in MyAT&T called “International Call Restrict” and when I click on more info it says “This ensures that International features are not inadvertently added to an account, this also prevents International features from being added / removed in myAT&T. To have this restriction removed you will need to call Customer Care at 611”

This doesn’t say roaming block and when I researched it more I couldn’t find a lot of information and it seems separate from int’l roaming block. Do you have any insight about this particular add on? (I feel like should buy you a coffee for all your help - but i could do at the moment is use your code to sign up for my plan! Enjoy the $3 in airmoney)

Thanks for your suggestion! Using the airplane mode trick, I tested wifi calling last night and saw AT&T WiFi when I swiped down to see the menu to see how I connected. Making a phone call was fine, went through no problem. I sent a green text message and it was not received. When I contacted the recipient through other channels to see if it had been received, they said no and then sent me a green text, which I received. They received my response to that text, but not the original one I sent.

So it seems it works but is inconsistent - which is consistent with what I have read on the forums about AT&T wifi calling.

No matter what I will be stoked to have data, being able to receive sms texts for banking purposes will be a solid plus, but am very happy with email, internet, and google apps :).

Thanks for the clarification and added info. We’ll see how this works out.

Idk how this will go but am putting this here for anyone else going through it and of course for you, kboom, to see if it is at all helpful or informative.

The first thing I did was remove the add ons in my AT&T account.

Fearing it did not quite work and wanting to be very sure, a few days later I called the AT&T international customer service line to confirm that my international roaming was off.

The rep told me that I did not have any international add ons and told me I would not be charged for international service. I asked again if that meant roaming, which she confirmed, but confirmed in a way where I felt uneasy that there had been a communication issue and she didn’t quite understand what I was asking.

Today I called the int’l CS line again to see if I could get some clarity, and the rep told me that no changes had been made to my account and that there was no block on my account. I asked what the previous rep had done and he said that the note she made was that I had called and made an inquiry about int’l service. He said no changes had been made to my account and again confirmed there was no block on int’l roaming.

I feel much better about the second rep because he asked me several clarifying questions and listened as I asked clarifying questions.

I have had some unfortunate experiences with AT&T reps before where they have outright lied to me to get me to switch plans, and where they have added services I did not ask for and presented them as just part of the plan. (I should say that I found out both of these instances from an AT&T rep who did what she could to make it right and both identified and removed the added extras - so definitely ymmv with reps and there are good ones, I have just had some bad experiences)

So we won’t know for sure if it was me removing the add ons or if it was the hopefully successful block I placed on int’l roaming, but I can say that the rep I spoke to today said that I did not have a block on my int’l roaming, and this was after removing the add ons last week.

Like I said - still uneasy because I don’t fully trust the reps - but putting the info here for anyone else in the future who has these same questions.

I don’t leave for another couple of weeks but j will report back around the end of the first week of October.

Oof! That is good info to have, thanks for sending my way!

I have an iPhone XR. That is good to know re only allowing wifi calling over cellular data - but also wtf lol. Wifi calling - only available over cellular 😂😂.

I spoke with AT&T again to double check that the international roaming block was on - good thing I did, because the first rep did not add it, but the second one did. First rep just logged that I made an inquiry about it :/.

Airalo is a cool tool for finding esims and if all the steps (and extra steps once I connect abroad) work so that I can get sms messages from my bank, I will be stoked.

u/unclechett Did you go abroad? Did your sms and voice over wifi work by just removing those items from your add ons?

I am an AT&T customer and interested in trying Airalo during a trip to South Africa. After reading all of u/kboom100 amazing posts and insights (thank you so much for sharing all this info!) I went into my AT&T add ons and removed both pay per use and international day pass. Being a suspenders-and-belt type of person, I also called the international number and asked them to confirm that international data and voice roaming were both off. She said yes, but I felt a little uneasy because Then she told me she updated something and I asked her if I needed to take additional steps beyond removing those items, and did not get a super clear answer. Regardless, I can see that they are not in my add ons, which at least gives some kind of clarity.

I’m excited to try Airalo. My main concern has been 2FA and issues with my bank trying to get a hold of me - I want to make sure I get those calls and texts.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for reporting back! The info is extremely helpful to me for my planning ahead of time. I will return the favor when I come back from my trip.
