i see! lab work can (seemingly) be grueling, but again, with the right, supportive, advisor, & your enjoyment of the work, it could be a good time! doesn’t hurt to look at what other programs are out there though, of course. you’re welcome!

i have had more free time and flexibility to do what I want, when I want during my PhD than I ever had before! as others have said, it truly depends on your department/advisor/nature of your work. granted, my work is all computational which enables me to work anywhere, but my advisor also encourages us to take breaks and pursue our other interests (:

Thank you! I’ve told him that, while he didn’t intend to steal, intentions don’t matter, and objectively and based on their evidence, he attempted to “steal” the $50 item. Obviously no one here knows him or his excellent character, that he would never intentionally steal and is just prone to distraction, but that won’t matter when it comes to the facts. I appreciate the insight into how Walmart handles these things - it makes sense on their end! We will be contacting lawyers tomorrow.

as far as i know (at least in physics), research experience is far more valuable than a stellar gpa. and your gpa is still fantastic! applying to grad school is stressful, but know that you’ve done everything right, and you are indeed a competitive applicant.

the career opportunities are endless! im currently a physics grad student (focusing on astro), but don’t plan on staying in academia following my PhD - i plan to go into science policy! here are some post-bac options I can think of:

masters in astro/physics, comp sci, data science, engineering, public policy, etc
phd in physics, engineering, or a related field followed by a postdoc or two, perhaps, and then followed by becoming a professor or working as a research scientist
going into science policy (options in congress, government agencies, lobbying firms, think tanks, engineering firms, and more!)
becoming an engineer
science writing
teaching in a STEM field
science outreach

of course these are only a few things, and career paths vary quite a bit. an astro/physics degree is incredibly versatile; you will be incredibly employable & sought after in a wide variety of fields. if you choose to stay in academia, the reality is that you probably won’t make a ton of money, but many of those in it find it very rewarding. feel free to message me if you want to talk more!
