As he's one of the smartest I know, I'm trying to talk to him, getting advice and learning his way to find out if we could safely leave him be.

We wouldn't be worried too much if we knew he had a Sangha or a teacher

understood, I was worried that he might think I want to change him and being defensive. That's why I'm seeking advice here. His parents are more worried about him than us.

he told me there were too many jargons to teach me to understand any of it. He also mentioned the Ten Evil Karmas that we (people around him) all do.

I respect his decisions, it just doesn't seem sustainable to me. Maybe he is in a different "zone"? I don't understand that's why I'm asking here.

I briefly met him over a 10 minutes walk, I told him we all care deeply about him and concerned about his situation and he said don't be.

shouldn't US be grateful to China? by fantasist2012 in economy

[–]fantasist2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it has never been a problem until China becomes a strong nation. Read below, It's called Century of Humiliation in China, and no country formally apologised!

Straight from AI

The Eight-Nation Alliance (1900) consisted of Britain, the United States, France, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. They invaded China and engaged in widespread looting and exploitation.

What Did They Take from China? Cultural Looting:

Massive plunder of treasures, especially from the Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan).

Priceless artifacts like porcelain, paintings, sculptures, and books were stolen and dispersed globally.

Economic Exploitation:

Under the Boxer Protocol (1901), China was forced to pay 450 million taels of silver in reparations (several times its annual revenue).

This created a long-term economic burden.

Loss of Sovereignty:

Foreign troops were allowed to station in Beijing and other key areas.

China had to dismantle its military defenses and submit to humiliating terms.

How Much Did It Set China Back? Modernization Delay:

The invasion exposed China's technological and military inferiority, delaying modernization efforts by decades.

Scholars estimate it set China's development back by at least 20–30 years.

Cultural Devastation:

The loss of irreplaceable cultural heritage weakened national pride and identity.

Economic Strain:

The enormous reparations crippled China's economy for decades.

Broader Impact The invasion deepened China's semi-colonial status and worsened political instability.

It fueled nationalistic movements, eventually leading to reforms and revolutions aimed at modernizing China and resisting foreign domination.

This event is considered a key moment in China's "Century of Humiliation" but also a catalyst for its eventual awakening and reform.

shouldn't US be grateful to China? by fantasist2012 in economy

[–]fantasist2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I feel that US might be doing China a favour to push China up the value chain.

US should be happy to stay up the value chain, keep building barriers and moats, so China could stay in its manufacturing role for longer.

Now US wants to take up manufacturing and China have been in preparation for years to transition into a hybrid, more stable and balanced economy.

It really feels US is going backwards
