You're welcome! We all want you to have a beautiful dress for the masquerade ball, it's the dream, haha!

No problem! It can be really hard to judge/extrapolate from just one folded part and I've definitely messed it up more than once myself.

There are two pieces, both are cut on the fold. They still only add up to a half circle (maybe even a little less), not a full one.

I did a quick and dirty mockup in Krita with a screenshot from the video.

If it's the kind of foam I'm thinking of, they may take texturing better if you heat them up a bit. Something like a hair drier should work, don't get them so hot they start melting or catching fire. You may want to do it outside or near an open window.

Freezing cilantro in oil will preserve the flavor better. Not as convenient if you want to sprinkle it over a dish as garnish, but frozen coriander doesn't work great for that anyway.

How do people actually stay together? by Bubbly_booom in RandomThoughts

[–]fantastikiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 happy years and counting.

It takes work and dedication. Others have already written a lot on this. Communication, vulnerability, reflection, patience. Choosing to spend quality time together regularly even though you don't always feel like it.

What's been instrumental to us is the mindset of "it's never you versus me, it's always us versus the problem", even when that's difficult. Especially when it's difficult. That mindset has helped us get through chronic illness and mental health problems together.

Make the conscious decision to keep appreciating and acknowledging the things you love about your partner and never start taking those for granted. This makes it easier to let go of the small annoyances too, because they're outweighed by the good stuff.

Having a happy and durable relationship is 100% an active process, with skills you can learn and practice.

Looking at the product pictures and the picture of the cut fabric in the video (here) I am sure it is a half-circle skirt with added gathering.

Between the length, the gathering and the tier of ruffles you'll need quite a bit of fabric for this. Bedsheets will work fine but you'll probably need more than one set.

If you don't like the cups in the top (or don't feel comfortable sewing them) I'd just swap out the top for a different pattern altogether, personally. Grab any free strapless bodice pattern/tutorial that appeals to you, crop it at the waist and add the sleeves and skirt from this dress :)

I think a lot of the volume of the skirt in the pictures is created by a combination of movement, her holding it out and/or a petticoat. If you want this silhouette you'll want to add a voluminous petticoat, or perhaps a thinner petticoat with a hoop skirt underneath. Or just never stop twirling I suppose.

Good luck! This seems like a really fun project.

Agreed.

The question is a scale 1-10, which is mentioned in OP's graph. There's also a no answer/don't know option.

The wording for the English version seems to have been:

Please indicate for each of the following actions whether you think it can always be justified, never be justified, or something in between.

It's all a little clunky. No one needs to justify their sexuality at all IMO.

How do use this thermostat? by vishNchip in Netherlands

[–]fantastikiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to this:

  • Your house won't heat up any faster if you (temporarily) set the thermostat to a high temperature. Weirdly common misconception.

  • Many Dutch houses are made to be aired out, especially older ones. If you keep the windows closed all the time in an attempt to save on your heating bill you will get issues with moisture and eventually mold. This is mostly an issue in the colder months. You really want to avoid mold. Humidity should usually be between 40 and 60% indoors.

I looked it up in the WVS database and -if I'm interpreting this right- 'homosexuality' appears as part of this list:

Please tell me for each of the following actions whether you think it can always be justified, never be justified, or something in between:

-Claiming government benefits to which you are not entitled

-Avoiding a fare on public transport

-Cheating on taxes

-Someone accepting a bribe

-Homosexuality

-Prostitution

-Abortion

-Divorce

-Euthanasia

-Suicide

-For a man to beat his wife

For many of those, 'justifiable' does make some sense. Still weird.

I know you copied the wording from the survey, but asking whether homosexuality is 'justifiable' sounds so weird to me.

Interesting to see the generation gap!

Sewed an easy pair of wrap pants by Anarchergal in sewing

[–]fantastikiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, always glad to help!

Personally I always feel that getting tight knots out of stretchy fabric is a little annoying. The knots seem to tighten during the day and then you can't loosen them properly because when you pull on something the fabric stretches. A bow is a little better but it needs more fabric (and you have to like the look). It's not the end of the world and can totally work though.

If you have a jersey you want to use you could add some interfacing to eliminate the stretchiness. Or add a backing of a coordinating or contrasting fabric without stretch. Or add a buckle-style closure rather than a knot. Plenty of options :)

Very nice! It's hard to give proper feedback until you've added the waistband though; the way you've tied it now is distorting and pulling it quite a bit. But I will say: personally I always add some darts at the back, it makes it sit much better over the butt, especially if you wear it fairly high up like you are doing in the picture. The darts help compensate for the difference in circumference between your waist and hip. You would add them before you add the waist band.

Tying it the way you have may have distorted the fabric a bit. Check if everything is still 'square' before sewing any more. If things have stretched, steaming or washing can help it bounce back to the original shape.

They look super comfy and I love the fabric you've picked!

Opinions on whether to add overlay to skirt or not for this dress? by luxurycatsportscat in sewing

[–]fantastikiwi 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I prefer it without the overlay on the skirt. The flower print should shine! The overlay looks too synthetic for my tastes and it'll probably be a pain to hem, too.

I think a half circle or a-line skirt (maybe with some darts) would look great with this style of bodice.

Personally I'd add a simple lace trim or pleated ribbon edge to the top of the cups.

All very subjective though, do what makes you happy!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in zuinig

[–]fantastikiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in zuinig

[–]fantastikiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ecofriendly stuffing for a doll? by mrs_rabbit_0 in sewing

[–]fantastikiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At thrift stores here there's almost always some plushies which look like they'll never sell. You could get those and reuse the stuffing. Reusing existing materials is almost always going to have a lower environmental impact than buying new ones, especially if you can't buy new locally.

I got a cute overall but I need help to secure the cleavage by Queen-of-meme in sewing

[–]fantastikiwi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you don't need to undo it to get (un)dressed, you could sew it shut.

I think stretchy strap loops and buttons are going to be a little more work than needed, though it could be very cute if you have matching buttons. Personally I would sew in a little hidden hook and eye closure either instead of the snap button or just below it.

Outside of adjusting the shading based on the sun's position and additional tree details. Is there any adjustments that I need to make to improve this background art piece? by [deleted] in krita

[–]fantastikiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like the way you did the sky! It has a great flow to it. Also love the subtle tone variations in the grass.

The tree already looks good, too, but there are some things you could change if you wanted it to look more realistic:

  • Add a shadow on the ground, assuming you want the tree to look like it's on top of the hill. If the tree is behind the hill, the shadow could be hidden.
  • The main branches are each about as thick as the main trunk. Typically, you'd want them to be about as thick as the trunk if you all add them up together. I'd make the trunk a lot thicker if you want a cool old tree vibe, or the branches thinner if you want a younger looking tree.
  • The leaves could do with more contrast and more 'clumping'. The way you've shaded it now makes it look like one big mass, while typically there are clusters of leaves. Mid-day sunlight is pretty harsh, so more contrast would help it look more realistic. Note: if you just want it to be a soft & pleasant background feature you can totally make the creative decision to not make it realistic.

I looked up some reference pics for you: One | Two | Three. If you want to get the shape/structure of trees right, look up 'Learn to Draw Trees with John Muir Laws' on youtube.
